After watching Catch and Release, I’ve come to realize something.
Peridot acts much more immature, when in a situation she’s not used to - she’s frightened, she’s aggressive, she loses her social skills. Some have interpreted this as her being childlike, similar to Amethyst’s seemingly “younger” personality in the flashback episodes. But this doesn’t match her previous portrayals, or her mature body type - she’s in no way coded as something that should be treated like a child.
So why does she act like that? Why did Amethyst act like that back in the day? Why would gems act less mature than they usually are? Well…
… Look at how they walk.
Look at how they act.
Look at them when they’re taken off-guard, or frightened, or excited.
Gems aren’t childlike.
They’re beastlike.
All of them, in different ways.
They snap their jaws to show aggression, they show an animalistic combination of caution and curiosity when dealing with new objects and places, they even run on all fours when distracted. Fear makes them not just aggressive, but outright vicious and murderous, like mindless attack dogs. They occasionally have feline and canine physical traits, like fangs and glowing eyes. Younger!Amethyst literally went running after a thrown stick.
Amethyst, Peridot and Jasper, all presumably Kindergarten gems, seem to be the most prone to this, while Pearl, Ruby, Sapphire and Rose appear to be more civilized, likely as a result of having been regular Homeworld citizens trying to survive in a very uptight, controlled society for a long time. They’re used to restraining themselves from acting too savage. Lapis has an animalistic mindset ruled by emotion and impulsiveness, guarded by a civilized facade, reflecting her powers and element. She always seems more mentally present, even when upset, because she almost always has the upper hand and thus doesn’t feel the panic of a cornered animal.
Try rewatching an episode with the mindset of “these are extremely intelligent cats and dogs who were taught human-like standards of social etiquette.” It solves a surprising amount of questions regarding their occasional lack of maturity/manners/empathy/etc., unifying the traits normally associated with different human age groups.
Among them, why Peridot turns into a squeaky, slap-y menace when frightened. She’s got the survival instincts of a wild animal, with none of the strength. She’s like a housecat.
Tl;dr: gems have instincts and traits similar to felines/canines. Moments of immaturity happen when a gem hasn’t developed the social skills to deal with a situation in a civilized manner (due to fear, excitement, anger, lack of self-discipline, etc.), causing them to act like wild animals - which is often misinterpreted as “childlike” because we’re not used to seeing adults react in such an animated, uncontrolled way.
You still ship with Peridots? the fuck is WONG WITH YOU THOUGH
Alright anon, let me tell you a thing. And if these gifs don’t work I will flip my shit.
Height =/= age. Ruby and Sapphire still get shipped - and they are canon but at no point has anyone been attacked over pedophilia for it, even though Ruby is extremely childish. Because guess what? It’s not pedophilia! Holy shit amazing right?
One of the people I used to date turned 19 a month before I did, and she was barely four and a half feet tall. You telling me she’s 10 years old in actuality despite having been born 19 years ago because she’s short? By that standard, my 37 year old mom is also a kid because he’s 5ft tall. Pretty sure my mom isn’t a toddler, and even she acts childish, and she’s had two kids! I’m 5ft 3, wearing a skeleton onsie, and drinking a capri sun - am I suddenly 6 years old? No I’m 19, so fuck right off.
“But!! PERIDOT ACTS SO CHILDISH!!”
Watch Keystone Motel - so does Ruby. Watch Mirror Gem. So does Lapis! Amethyst is also pretty childish, and Garnet can be at times if she’s with Steven.
When Peridot first came to Earth, she was actually pretty mature, knew what she was doing, even knew to deploy something akin to an EMP when she realized that the site had been compromised.
Even when she’s at the site, she does the 3: face you all seem to be using as an attack against Peridot rpers.
That’s kinda how her mouth works - sorry not sorry to point out some of your bs there.
On top of that, Peridot’s clearly unfamiliar with Earth since she didn’t know what humans were (since Gems are yknow. From space. and probably have other planets to be dealing with. Homeworld probably expected humans to have gone extinct by now anyway - let alone one end up in the kindergarten’s gut).
In this scene, what does she call this technology? Archaic. Do you know what that means, anon? Old, out of date, no longer used. If she was 5 years old she prooobably wouldn’t know that, or know how to use it. Give a kid used to touch screens a blackberry and watch them get confused. Using older tech is just as hard as newer tech if you’re not used to it. Yet she knew how to use it well enough to control it for a purpose it was not intended for - attacking Steven.
In Friend Ship, she also acts childish - but she’s still tall so like, nbd right?
In Catch & Release, Peridot is straight up panicking.
As someone who experiences panic and anxiety attacks, she’s clearly displaying symptoms of at least one of those. She’s somewhere unfamiliar, and she is terrified. Here, she still has those limb enhancers that have that awesome weapon on.
Here?
She doesn’t have them. She thought she did, but she doesn’t. And because of that she panics even more. You would feel a lot safer walking home in the dark with a flashlight and a gun you knew how to use, right? Walking home in the dark without the gun is fucking terrifying - how do you think she feels, she has no idea what this planet has in store for her, and as she has said, it has an expiration date.
She fully believes she is going to die.
So when she finds out she can use her hands as a weapon? She’s pretty relieved, and does just that,
But obviously, it’s not going to do that much damage, it just kinda throws Steven off. She’s found a way to defend herself, why wouldn’t she be pleased with that? She probably thought she was completely defenseless until this point.
People using this as an excuse to defend their attacking:
This would only have been a childish move if she actually knew that doing this would have been immature. She has never been in a bathroom before.
So she definitely doesn’t know what a toilet is.
Quite clearly, she thinks it’s an escape tunnel of some sort. If she knew humans pissed in that do you think she would really have hopped in and flushed herself? I really don’t think so.
As for this:
She was fascinated by the mirror to start with, which means she probably just hasn’t seen her reflection. There’s no real need for her to have. Also, she knows a Gem who was trapped in one of these things for a while, I’d be pretty curious about it too.
This isn’t an act of childishness. None of this acting if things are weapons, and being paranoid, are signs of being 10 years old mentally. They remind me more as signs of previous abuse or constant threat - something I have also experienced.
The fact that people are calling this behavior childish is kind of fucking upsetting - if I thought I was going to be killed (again, garnet SQUEEZED HER TO DEATH) and then locked myself away in a room I had no idea about, on a planet that I wasn’t familiar with, I wouldn’t have let anyone in. She let Steven in, and asked if everything was a weapon because she was absolutely terrified, not because she’s a kid.
Lapis literally made fart jokes, but because she ended up serious, none of you make a peep.
But a character that starts of serious, then shows symptoms of panic, anxiety, and possible trauma or abuse, you call her childish.
You can fuck off.
(forgive typos or random caps - I’m dyslexic and I was angry. Plus if your only argument is YOU MADE A TYPO THO, you have no argument at all)
