OR she heard he’s in the air force and she has a kid who is sort of aimless in high school and he wants him to meet the kid to tell him more about the air force in the hopes of getting that teenager on some sort of track with some sort of goal in life? or both. both of these are also good.

police officers are not reyna’s favorite people. she has never been in serious legal trouble, otherwise, she could not be a guidance counselor but she has had police officers stop her in routine traffic control who made a very embarring deal about her gender marker and picture. she only had everything (including her birth certificate) changed in january but before that, police have been a source of humiliation for her. one even asked whether she was a streetwalker. she had almost decked him. on top of that, being a person of color, she just doesn’t feel very safe around police officers. so, either he is the exception or she stays wary of him because of his occupation. that is what i’m mostly thinking.

reyna is just not impressed. she probably feels it’s pretty offensive that this rich lady wants to live with them to ‘understand’ them for some role. she’d feel observed and like some sort of project, as in - will we still be friends when your little role is over? or will we then just be some memory you used for method acting? she will be very skeptical and just raise her eyebrow judgingly.

b i o g r a p h y

she grew up in a middle-class family in fresno, california as the oldest of three. she has two younger brothers.

she had a pretty normal upbringing. she played basketball, loved going out to ride her bike and was actually pretty boyish as a kid. 

even though she was what she now describes as a tomboy, she always felt like she wasn’t really one of the boys. they shared the same interests, but they weren’t the same. she didn’t have the words for it, but when she hit puberty at fourteen things started to happen to her body that she didn’t want. at all. dysphoria was then introduced into her life and it didn’t leave.

she had no clue why she hated looking in the mirror and her feelings were all over the place. she wanted to dress like the girls she now got on with, her friends. it felt so natural to speak and gesture like them, and she noticed that in her dreams she was often female, not male.

for a while, she thought she was a gay man but even that didn’t really feel right. she liked the boys she dated, but it still didn’t feel like it was what was going on with her.

in her senior year, she finally talked to a guidance counselor who changed her life. for the first time, terms like transgender and dysphoria were explained to her and she nodded along - that seemed to fit her. that was what was going on with her. her mind was blown and at least now, she had a name for the weight on her shoulders. she isn’t sure what she would have done without miss jackson, who is still an inspiration to her.

she was certain that her family would not accept this. even gay people freaked them out, let alone transgender people. so, she stayed in the closet. she wanted to go to college and she needed her parents’ support for that. 

she started to dress like herself in private and with a few close friends who did know about her. it was around that time that she chose the name reyna for herself.

she worked and lived at home after graduation to save up - not caring that people frowned at her in her mid-twenties still living at home. she knew once she came out, that it would be all over - and she was right.

three years ago, she came out and was asked to leave the house. she did and with the money she had, she had a buffer to comfortably rent a studio. she also slowly started her transition, from therapy to eventually hormone therapy. chest surgery was done around a year ago and after that, she found a job at a high school here in new york - so eleven months ago she arrived here. 

she is working in a very accepting environment at the school and she is very happy with the work she is doing. she is still finding her place in the world and still trying to figure out who she is, but she is a lot happier than she was a few years ago for sure.

she isn’t sure whether to take further steps in her transition or not at this stage.

she has recently found herself attracted to a woman and has no idea what that means for her now. she’s always identified as a straight woman, but now - maybe that isn’t true either.
