So Study Abroad is B.S.
But not exactly
Hey girls! so like...Â
What the heck. These study abroad companies have dropped statistics on us BOSS FEMALE BUSINESS MAJORS that is just completely manipulative and full of bias.Â
First off, I know you sisters are familiar with privilege, but I’m gonna go over it one more time. White. People. Have. An. Easier. Go. At. Life. Because. Our. Country. Is. Built. Around. Them. Essentially, the system is rigged to favor white males, and prevent women and minority groups from attaining the same levels of wealth and power.Â
ALL business majors chose the major cause they want that breeaaadddd. None of us grew up dreaming of someday being accountants or marketers. WE WANT MONEY. We want red bottoms, vacays to the Maldives, and a big house for our babies and baby daddy. Naturally, this leaves us pretty freakin’ vulnerable to get-rich-quick schemes. (Side note: have any of y'all tried Slidejoy yet? comment below. Their ad keeps coming up on my snapchat stories)
I DIGRESS... I saw this ad as I was leaving the business school that said study abroad alumni out-earn their study-abroad-less counterparts by some crazy margin. On Studyabroad.com, they advertise that 97% of their students find employment within 12 months of graduation.Â
UM NO S**T STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS HAVE ADVANTAGES OVER THEIR PEERS. If your family can afford to fly you overseas to drink sangria and go to the beach with your house family, chances are you’re gonna be just fine in life.Â
But anyways, I was determined to find more information for you girls. After all, us boss females won't believe just anything. I found this incredible article “Predictors of Study Abroad Intent, Participation, and College Outcomes” on study abroad and demographics that you should all totes skim if you have time. In that same article, I found this quote “In addition to Asian-American students, African-American students were less likely to study abroad than their Caucasian peers and that parental income was positively related to student participation in study abroad.” BANG. Omg when I found that quote I was so relieved to know my assumption was correct, but I was so PISSED that study abroad companies and college programs were still using misaligned advertising to target business majors and manipulate us.Â
Girls, here’s where you come in. Spread the word, and DO NOT SUPPORT THESE COMPANIES!!! I’m including links to their websites below
studyabroad.com
Gooverseas.com
https://www.aifsabroad.com
And ANY company that takes advantage of white privilege to manipulate boss b****es and other business majors for that matter. We should support and travel with honest companies that encourage us to learn a language on our trip. After all, the value in study abroad doesn't lie in the sangria (wellll it depends how you define value). It lies in the opportunity to become bilingual.Â
If you’re studying abroad, consider that “speaking Spanish is worth an extra $51,000 in your retirement account, French is worth $77,000, and German $128,000” that’s a couple trips to the Bahamas and a year of your child’s tuition right there. Ugh, that’s another topic. Btw, I found that quote in a 2016 Economist article by this dude Tom Parisi.Â
I’m sorry if it felt like I was preaching, but I really needed to get all of this off my chest. Doesn't the notion that a vacation with some easy credits attached increases your salary just strike you as absurd? Well, I had to rant and back up my claims. You all know me!!
Fight back against the patriarchy, and support business that dismantle privilege!!!!
xoxo,
