some jazz and hot cocoa and criminal law. pro tip: if you mix cocoa powder, powdered milk, sugar, and salt in the right ratios, it tastes like swiss miss.

Growing up my mum had this table in her room as a desk. When they moved to England my parents sawed the legs off, and sat around it with friends and cigarettes and vodka––quite a bit apparently––then they gave it to me and it lived at the end of my bed. I wrote the portfolio of work that got me accepted to university at this table. It’s been in my old room for a few years while I was moving around London a lot but recently I brought it to my flat and having it here is such magic; it’s amazing thinking about how every mark on this wood is my family, sitting around it for all these years, and how we get to continue that. Right now, it’s my workspace 🖤

Filter or espresso? I still have a soft spot for long extractions that make pretty shades of orange, that smell sweet and clear

Bach/Glenn Gould, The Art of the Fugue Vol. I
In an odd sort of mood tonight.
I’ve considered Bach’s Art of Fugue essential listening ever since reading Goedel Escher Bach: An Endless Golden Braid, and I prefer Glenn Gould moody organ rendering over any of the orchestral versions I’ve heard. Apparently that’s the minority position though: this record flopped hard enough that he never recorded Volume II, much to my disappointment. Who doesn’t love to give their sound system a good workout with a full pipe organ?

Penguins new ad campaign celebrates well-read books

This new ad campaign from Penguin appeals to those of us who think beat-up, torn, taped, scribbled-upon books are more appealing than pristine ones. I wondered if the books photographed here were found as is, or lovingly distressed by the art director, then I saw the small print in the lower right of each ad, which suggests they were found that way.

July 4, 2019
My first summer in college, I started a photo album where I took a photo of every study spot I went to (I got to almost 200!) and I’m starting to do that again! I’ve been studying in a different location every single day and it makes studying more fun. Studying for so many hours every day can easily get monotonous, but changing up the setting actually helps a lot :-)
