The certainty is very large, I am using scientific evidence presented in different articles and in different forms. I am able to present information and I can back up these statements with multiple sources. I am trying to present the evidence in a way that seems like I am certain of this information but that I am trying to show the audience just how much of an effect it has on their lives. I want them to see what the truth is behind fears they have themselves or fears that someone close to them may have. I want them to know that there is evidence of different problems happening when you don’t visit your dentist and that it needs to be taken care of. You can’t just let your oral health go and feel okay with the thought of never seeing a dental professional ever again. No matter how frightening, it is something that needs to happen and the best way to do that is to prevent evidence that can be proven in multiple formats.

This article is a feature article. It addresses an audience directed towards an interest of humans and what we are. The author chose to include direct quotes to show the reasoning behind some of his statements and prove the science behind the article. As you get deeping into the article, it goes more in depth into some of the science and reasoning behind the research. The article seems to slowly weed out the readers that aren’t as interested in the science but were perhaps intrigued by the idea of what makes us human. The quotes are more scarce and the stories less story-like and more fact based.

In this article, it describes that it was predicted by 2100 the ocean would rise 3 feet. The new discoveries conducted by 3 separate findings have realized it may be closer to 6 feet. Their discoveries also led to findings showing that the last ice-age had spurts of fast rising waters which is similar to what we are seeing. This spells nothing good for the future of earth’s oceans. Our large use of fossil fuels is contributing towards these rising levels and if we don’t stop soon, we may soon have fast collapsing glaciers. Hopefully we will be able to slow down our use of these fossil fuels and prevent the rise of the oceans as much as we can.
This article shows how an author has made a feature article. Rather than include a lot of information and numbers from numerous studies to show specific information, they cut it down to only particular numbers that relate to their specific use. I found it interesting that they were able to make their opinion heard even with the use of three separate research papers.

Rand Paul recently looked at federal spending and chose to take action against research. He proposed that all grant application boards should have two members who are not involved in the research to review said research. This would allow them to look further into how the application of the research affects the public. He stated that this isn’t to oppose research, but rather to create a level playing field for everyone to have an opportunity to receive funding. His thoughts surround the idea that there are a lot of “odd” projects going on that don’t need funding in comparison to other research.
It appears there is a lot of author bias on this subject and it can be seen in many of the word choices. They also chose to highlight some quotes that aren’t objective and instead steer Rand Paul to looking more or less like a man who is angry at science. I don’t necessarily agree with the author but they do have a right to write however they see fit.

In this study published as a popular piece on ScienceMag, it appears that Easter Islanders didn’t sail to South America first. In past research, it appeared that the islanders would’ve met Native American’s before Europeans ever did. New research now points exactly against these ideas. When DNA was tested from Pre-European encountered Islander’s, there was no Native American DNA found; it was also not found in later times until modern day DNA was tested. This shows that more and more research needs to be done before a full picture can be established. One study won’t have all of the facts.
This article shows how we need to include more than one research paper to have enough information. When beginning project 3, there is a need to have multiple sources that can either back one another up or disprove each other. A lot of information is necessary for all the facts to be seen. This has helped me realize just how important this fact is.

In this article, it is stated that there was a patient who had previously been in a vegetative state. They were unable to move, speak, or respond. Scientists in France were able to give this patient the power of response and the researchers released this amazing news. A few short months later, the patient unfortunately passed away due to a lung infection and the researchers chose to not release this news of the death. They are told to have said they didn’t wish for this death to be linked to the successful therapy.
The article chose to spin the story more towards the researchers favor versus the public’s viewpoint. They chose quotes from the scientists insisting that the reason they held back was merely because of the family’s wishes. They didn’t show the public’s perspective on why this backlash may be occurring.

Lately, there was a merge of 2 black holes which were discoverable by detection of a ripple in space which set off 3 detectors. These gravitational waves, or ripples in space, are only possible because of Einstein’s theory of gravity. LIGO was formed to hunt down these waves and they paired up with Virgo in Italy to determine an area where the merger occured recently. There are theories floating around, though, that perhaps it was two neutron stars merging but we won’t know unless we see a flash of light. This flash of light would come from a small area determined in the sky via location from the three detectors.

Blue Dinosaur Eggs Have Revealed a Surprise About Ancient Bird-Like Creatures
by Michelle Starr
A new study has revealed that at least one dinosaur species laid eggs that were a striking blue-green colour - and that suggests the creatures were even more like birds than we previously thought.
Analysis of a fossilised dinosaur nest has now confirmed the egg shells found within weren’t discoloured by fossilisation, but were actually blue. And colour matters - in this case it hints at a nesting structure where devoted fathers watched the eggs.
The dinosaur in question is a species of Late Cretaceous oviraptor called Heyuannia huangi - a beaked ostrich-like dinosaur that lived 66 million years ago in China.
Many birds, and all reptiles, lay white, unpigmented eggs - and the assumption had long been that all dinosaurs did too…

In this article, it was revealed just how easily science can be manipulated by words alone. I decided to choose this article because this week we are going over the tone and genre of articles. This article is very personal and opinionated. They speak of another journalist’s articles and states them as “awful”. I felt that it was necessary to point out that an opinionated piece can be seen as helpful in detailing information and finding flaws in other works one might miss otherwise. But, these kinds of articles should also be taken with a grain of salt, as they are filled with a single person’s thoughts and ideas. Don’t allow your own opinions and distance from these articles to be overtaken by other’s.

Fahnstock: Accommodating Science Article
3. I agree with Fahnestock in that some scientific fields are difficult to accommodate for the public. On page 5, she discusses a piece from a science writer from a Dental Research Institute. She quotes him saying that the public doesn’t care much for information in journals unless it affects their pocket book or pain threshold. I am going into the dental field so I was rather surprised to see a reference to the dental community. It struck me that the public usually doesn’t seek out specific articles or pieces of writing that include mathematics or physics as she used as an example. If you peruse through your Facebook or a friends’, usually you will see articles of how a certain medication has side effects. Or how there is a new weight loss diet that takes less time and requires less work.
Scientists who work with directly human related scientists are usually found to have sought after journals in the next way to make our lives easier. Even as such, chemistry has a large impact on human related science as well, but most of the public doesn’t look for the next compound to be super cooled. Rather, they want to see how that chemistry has been applied to the medical portion of it all and how it helps them out. My field in dentistry relates to people directly and so it is easy to sit down and look up research that has been accommodated for the public that isn’t so dry. Chemists and otherwise must prove themselves to their peers most importantly and from there, they can attempt to bring down their writings. Yet there is only so much one can do to take a piece of information before it doesn’t mean what it usually does.
What struck me is the piece where she described on page 6, how a bee with teeth writing was accommodated. They changed the writing in a certain way that drastically altered the interpretation. Rather than saying the bee eats only certain things in its diet, the accommodated piece said that the bees could eat any animal. She went on to describe that this could mean bees can eat humans by that definition and it really changed my perspective on how drastically phrasing can change the intent of a piece of writing.

In this article, a professor from NYU discusses her CV. She tells of how her path looks pretty smooth and clean. Everything shows a clear path that had no difficulties and brought her directly where she intended. That is far from the truth and rather, her path has its difficulties and detours. She explains that very few paths are clean cut and without its troubles despite what the paper may be trying to tell you.
I really enjoyed this article and the ideas of having professors that seem like they have their lives together so well speak up about their own paths. It brings compassion to the student along with a sense of relief that they aren’t alone in figuring out their own path. CV’s are daunting and show only what you want others to see, that’s the point, that you only show the good pieces. I love the idea that you can understand and connect with others that seem so high up on the rung of the ladder of life that you will never reach them.

Molecules have now been super-cooled, nearly to temperatures to which atoms get down. Using a magneto-optical trap, scientists have been able to ultra cool molecules down to tens of millionths of a degree. They have been able to do this through the use of lasers and magnetic fields. The lasers create an electromagnetic field that takes the strength and energy from a molecule. It does this continuously so the molecules quickly loses all heat it may produce and it is rapidly cooled. Michael Tarbutt, the coauthor for the study, has a belief that these freezing molecules will be astounding, just as the near absolute zero atoms were when first realized. This is an awesome discovery, one to keep an eye on as the temperature drops.
I think it is amazing that entire molecules are beginning to be super cooled. For new and exciting science to be happening in our lifetime is pretty amazing. You can’t go back and experience the realization of new and exciting scientific findings but we can experience new research. Science is ever evolving and new research leads to more and more discovery about the world around us. I am excited to be a part of this research as an undergraduate and as a graduate in the future.
