The new semester is about to start, and I am mentally preparing myself for going back to taking 3-hour-long classes. Yes, all of my classes are that long. That’s the master’s life for you. So as I am getting ready to go back to university, I thought I’d share the tips that I’ve found the most helpful on how to survive long classes.
Maybe your classes aren’t as long as mine, or maybe they’re only 50 minutes and feel like three hours. No matter what your situation is, I hope you can find these tips useful.
1. Bring a snack and a refillable bottle of water. This is probably the most important tip I can give you for any class you’re taking, especially if it lasts for three hours. I guarantee you will get hungry and thirsty, and the last thing you want to do is get up in the middle of class to go get a snack from the vending machine. Most professors give breaks when classes are this long, but in case you get hungry beforehand, bring a snack with you and a refillable bottle of water so you can quench your thirst and help the environment all at the same time.
2. Sit close to the front. Now I know this can be terrifying for a lot of you, but sometimes terror is a great motivator… Just kidding. If it’s not too much of a struggle on your mental health to sit at the front of the class, I highly recommend it. It will be easier to pay attention since you know if you drift off the professor can see you.
3. Participate in class discussions. Talking with others helps keep the brain stimulated and helps you keep paying attention. Just make sure you’re talking about the class with your classmates and professor and not about the latest Kardashian gossip (unless that actually is being discussed in class).
4. Actively take notes. Not just writing down every single thing the professor says, but really listening to what the professor is saying and writing it in your own words and dumbing it down is a great way to keep yourself invested in the class.
5. Doodle! Sometimes your brain needs a break from the heavy mental load that comes with taking classes. Don’t be afraid to doodle in your notes, even if it ruins their ~aesthetic~. In some cases, this even helps keep your brain stimulated.
This post is part of my Back to School series where I’ll be posting every day from August 1 until I start class on August 12. Come back to my Tumblr every day for new content on studying, translating, and productivity. Hope you have a productive day!

ok so apparently not a lot of ppl know to do this when ‘reviewing notes’ but
look at section of notes
look away from section of notes
explain section of notes
check if explanation was correct
identify mistakes/gaps
recite correction for each mistake/gap
repeat until no mistakes
gotta practice recalling the info instead of just acknowledging its correctness
