How to Create a Self-Study Schedule
Tumblr media
If you’re studying any foreign language on your own (or without a course) you’re going to need to be extra organized. Your language study is in your own hands and so is how much you learn. There is no one holding you accountable or motivated either. So it’s entirely up to you to make sure you’re organized and planning enough material that your learning at a comfortable pace. There are roughly two ways to learn languages on your own. There are roughly two ways to go about planning your language study: intensively or casually. Here are my tips for intensive studying and I’ll post about casual studying soon:

hello!
long story short, i’ve decided to pull myself together and make a studyblr in the hopes of bringing my motivation to work up, since it’s at a bit of a low point right now.
but i should probably introduce myself first, right?
i’m izzy, i’m 16 + currently in my first term of sixth form.
i study art, english language, + early modern history.
i’m an aspiring journalist/writer, + am hoping to study history + journalism at uni in london.
i’m a huge fan of harry potter, stranger things + horror films/literature (especially stephen king)
hopefully this blog will help bring my productivity up + potentially find some news pals along the way :)
peace + love,
iz 🌿

a guide on how to stay on top of school💫🌿
use a planner! i know this has been said a trillion times before, but seriously, if you don’t use one, please go get one! this is super helpful to make sure you don’t forget anything. you can also use a bullet journal or an app on your phone (just a safe place to keep your to-do lists!)
make the most of your time in class (even if you hate the class or if it’s super boring!). this will save yourself from extra work for when you get home. also, paying attention in class and asking questions would help you to better understand the content!
also make use of free time. for example, when you’re on transportation, read over some notes or review a quizlet you made. you can also make recordings of yourself reading the notes and listen to them whenever you have free time!
do your homework as soon as it’s assigned!. it doesn’t matter if you have a couple days or a week until it’s due. chances are, you’ll be rushing it right before it’s due. so if you have extra time at the moment, save yourself the stress and at least start on it.
stay organized. for example, we all have that “everything” folder to dump all of our papers in, at least i do. all of the papers from every class quickly gets stuffed in there and can get lost. i’m not saying that you can’t have an everything folder (i do, so i don’t have to carry home heavy binders), but make sure to organize it often.
ask for help. your teachers are there to help you when you don’t understand something, so don’t be afraid to ask a question! also, in my school, my teachers have scheduled hours once a week for students to come in and do their work and ask questions when needed. you can always send a quick email to them or just ask a friend too!
take care of yourself! it’s easy to forget about self care and your health when swept up in schoolwork. make sure relax every so often, and hydrate. also, please get more sleep!!
do your best! if you put in effort towards your work, it will pay off in the future. just imagine yourself achieving all the things you’ve been daydreaming about because of the work you put in now! and for those classes that you really can’t stand, just try to have a more positive attitude and treat it as if it’s one of your favorites (because that’s the only way you’ll pull through).

Well done tumblr for ruining my picture quality 😤
Anyway, I’ve almost finished my second watercolour piece for the week, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe.
So far I’m in the experimentation stage of my course and I’m having a lot of fun exploring different techniques and mediums, I would say I enjoyed dark room photography the most, once I‘ve finished my dark room photography page I will definitely post it on here!

Speaking of Poe, I remember learning a while back that a sign of repeated low-grade carbon monoxide poisoning manifests in a really particular facial asymmetry that is super exemplified in him.
Tumblr media
One side of the mouth will turn upwards, and the brow on the same side will turn down. It can definitely be seen in images of other people from this era, and also coincides with homes and spaces being increasingly lit with coal gas.
Symptoms of low-grade carbon monoxide poisoning can also manifest as feeling like you’re being haunted. Unease, visual and auditory hallucinations, all that. There have been instances of people today who think their house is haunted finding that they have something leaking CO into it instead.
Victorians have absolutely solidified their place as Spooky Ghost People who influenced…so much about how ghosts are thought about and portrayed today. And while there are a lot of Actual Reasons as to why things like Spiritualism really took off in the mid 19th century…ongoing CO poisoning probably didn’t help with people NOT seeing ghosts.

hi! do you have any tips for surviving sixth form!!!
Hi!! so my first tips for surviving sixth form applies basically before you even start school and its just really to make sure you are prepared as much as possible
-make sure you’ve got all the supplies you need
-try to get your sleep schedule back on track before you start
My tips for when you’re actually at sixthform:
-very generic but do your homework the night you get it (if possible) because it is better to get stuff over with as quick as possible to prevent work piling up.
- It will very new to you at first so don’t worry if you’re not loving the first couple of weeks because it will settle down.
-
- A levels are not impossible- even though it may seem like a massive amount of work of things you can barely understand at the moment it will get easier.
-
- when you start keep like a massive amount of chocolate (or a healthier alternative) stashed a way in your room because there will be days when you just need it.
-
- revise for all tests you have set at least 3 days in advance
-
- make revision notes as you go along
-
- drink water throughout the day so your brain doesn’t dry up like a prune
-
- talk to people you’ve never talked to before, give them a chance, most will surprise you.
-
- stop doing homework at 9 max so as to give yourself like an hour or so of chill time.
-
- don’t beat yourself up if your first test scores are not what you wanted you will get better.
-
- Don’t be afraid to put your hand up or ask for help when you need it because honestly feeling awkward for like a minute while you ask a question in class beats sitting at home upset because you can’t figure out how to answer the questions.
-
- Be nice to everyone
-
- if you do English literature buy two copies of each book- one for class to keep in your locker and one at home so you never forget.
- its okay to drop a subject if you’re doing 4 it’s better to get 3 good marks than 4 ones you’re not happy with. no one cares if you do 3 or 4
feel free to tell me your own:)

quickfire study tips
congrats ! past papers are your new best friend. don’t forget the mark schemes.
repetition repetition repetition
start big and condense down. notes to mind maps to flashcards.
don’t spend a full day studying. please. you will hurt your brain.
teach someone! if there’s nobody to listen to you teach, teach your teddy bears god dammit
plan what you’re gonna do with your time. even just roughly.
organise your shit, bruh. you don’t need fancy planners and wall posters, just know what you need to study and know what homework is due
flash cards are great but only if you keep reviewing them
mind maps are great for linking concepts !!!
make sure you’re looking after yourself bc you’ll never work well otherwise
on that note, here’s a bunch of foods that boost your brain power
extra reading !! books and articles and videos on your subject can massively help you in exams okay
practise recall, not recognition
just put your phone away. or turn it off. whatever works.
colour coding is great, so long as you don’t go overboard
don’t ! listen ! to! music ! with ! lyrics !!!!!!!!

Oop I start school again next week and I’m simultaneously scared and excited. I want to at least try to make new friends as that’s kinda hard for me (I’m not very social) but hopefully I can force myself out of my comfort zone.
I’ll be studying English lit, Spanish and art and design when school starts; I’ll post all of my notes here and if anyone can provide any help or tips to pass those subjects I’d appreciate it!

Some of these will not apply to many people so pls take them with a grain of salt. Also I’ve been collecting these pretty much for the two years I’ve been in college so it’s not a guide, they’re just… random I guess.
Making friends
Warning - specially tailored for super shy people aka me
There’s a thing called the ‘first week window of endless oportunities’. It’s when groups are still forming and everyone’s desperate to make friends. This is the time to put your best self forward (I’m not saying be fake, just a little extra friendly).
Leave. Your. Door. Open. Do it. Even if you have a roommate. Best way to make friends the first week.
Actually get out of your room. You’re not going to meet many people if you hole up in your room. If you have a tv room or people are watching a movie, I don’t care if you’re not interested in what they’re watching, go.
If you have the balls to go to the room nextdoor and introduce yourself then you probably can skip this section by all means do it!
But if you don’t, going from door to door asking for help with your laundry takes a lot less courage + you will learn how to do laundry. Asking to borrow something (pencil, hair tie, hair dryer) also works.
If you’re staying at a residence hall, ask to sit with people at lunch! Nobody is going to say no, i promise.
Similarly if you see someone alone, ask them to have lunch with you!
Also if you meet someone you get along with, as soon as you can, ask for their number ‘so you can go to the dinning hall together’.
Remember people’s names - it makes people feel like you actually care about them. I know it’s hard but make an effort. Also it just gets annoying when someone asks about your name for the fourth time. Use mnemonics if you have to.
Asking what someone’s major is and where they’re from is standard procedure when you meet them but it doesn’t make for an interesting conversation. Think of other questions!
Make sure to arrive about 10 min early to your classes. There’ll be very few people and so it’ll be easier to strike up a conversation (actually people will probably talk to you without you having to say anything which is g r e a t)
Say yes - as a rule of thumb, your social life should prevail over your academic life the first two weeks. This is the time where you’re not really pressed for time. Say yes to watching movies, say yes to going to lunch, say yes to going to campus events (and even to parties). Obviously don’t do anything that makes you really unconfortable but do try to step out of your comfort zone
Make friends with an upper-classman from your same major. Or at least be on speaking terms. Talk to them on Facebook, ask them about your major, just use any random idc excuse to introduce yourself, it doesn’t really matter how you do it.
Don’t go home every weekend, even if you live close by. You’ll miss out on the best of campus life and some of the most fun memories with your new friends.
Keeping your old friends
If you know you’re going home for the weekend, try to finish most of your assignments/studying and make time to hang out with your friends. Spending time with them is the best way to keep those friendships alive.
But! Don’t worry too much if you can’t come home or make time for your friends too often, you just have to make an effort to text them regularly. It will come naturally if it’s your best friend, but don’t forget to set a reminder to text other close friends at least once every two weeks.
You may think you don’t care now but you will once you come home for the summer.
If any of your friends are staying in your hometown for college, be ready for them to get another friend group. That doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about you, but don’t be mad if they seem to have a lot more plans that don’t involve you. You can always ask to tag along some time and maybe even become friends with these people!
Some people you’ll just lose contact with. Don’t fret it.
Organization
Please print out or buy a calendar that has a whole page for each month. With boxes preferably *shameless plug*. You may think you have it all under control but there’s nothing like being able to see all your due dates, hang out plans and laundry days at a glance. (Also js but the pilot frixion are perfect to use on calendars because they’re erasable).
There’s so much space under your bed. UTILIZE IT.

how to avoid education burnout
have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didn’t accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because they’re my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasn’t able to finish during the week.
recognize when you’re at your emotional limits: forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically: take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments: go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand: it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you don’t become overwhelmed.
learn how to ask for help: it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies: you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you don’t lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time: it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.
