Just a picture based on a silly thing I tweeted this morning:
---
The boy couldn’t have been more than five, but the sheer volume of his wailing made it seem like the heavens themselves had wronged him.
“Shizuuuuuun!” he sobbed, tears streaking his cheeks, little fists pounding the ground. His face was blotchy, his robes rumpled, and a tiny ribbon in his hair hung askew.
A few villagers hovered nearby, exchanging helpless glances. No one dared approach, until the village auntie finally stepped forward.
She knelt carefully. “Er... little one? What’s your shizun’s name?”
The boy sniffled violently. “Shizuuuunnn! 😭”
“Right. That’s... helpful.”
“He's got to be one of the Yuheng Elder’s disciples,” someone murmured. “Only Chu Wanning could raise a child that dramatic.”
"Let's just drop him at the foot of Sishen Peak. I'm sure he’ll find his way back up."
Cue: Chu Wanning with a sniffling Binghe in his arms, sweeping through the market in search of Shen Qingqiu.

If nothing else Shi Mei is a tough little son of a bitch

Hi, I'm reading 2ha currently but I've stopped atm because I'm at the part where it's explicitly stated that wanning fell in love with mo ran when moran was 15years old? Is it true? That wanning has had a crush on mo ran when mo ran was just 15 while wanning was 30+? Isn't it grooming then?
LOL, no offence, anon, but I had a little chuckle at the idea of CWN grooming anyone 😂 He is just not capable!
OBLIGATORY WARNING: SPOILERS!!!
The fact is, this book has a list of warnings as long as my arm that includes all kinds of obscenities, including mutilating and cannibalizing children, treason, torture, murder, genocide, sexual slavery and all flavours of non-con and rape. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to be uncomfortable and not touch it with a ten-foot pole, however, grooming is not one of them.
When the mentions of this novel first crossed my dash, I checked out the summary and was immediately put off by it being a teacher/student relationship, which is a particularly squicky power imbalance for me and something I usually can’t click out of fast enough. However, when I actually sat down to read it, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that 2ha actually subverted the power dynamics.
First of all, grooming implies a predatory intent. It involves manipulating a minor into entering a sexual relationship. All key elements that would make it grooming are missing in this case. CWN has no predatory intent (or any intent, for that matter, unless it is to protect Mo Ran, teach him well and watch him prosper), he is incapable of manipulation and, honestly, sex does not really occur to him as more than a vague theoretical concept and something he knows other people practice, but which is certainly not a possibility for him.
In addition, in the context of the society that they live in, the taboo of their relationship is not the age gap, but the fact that they are master and disciple, which, again, makes all the sense to me, because of the inherent power imbalance between a teacher and a student, and the sacred obligation they both have towards each other (but especially CWN towards Mo Ran).
Another important thing: loving someone, and even finding them sexually attractive, is not inherently predatory. Acting on it is. There is a reason why the “But he wanted it!!” and “We’re in love!!” line of defence is laughable and gross in the context of large power imbalances, be it age gaps or teacher/student relationships. No matter how horny the teenager is, as an adult, it is your responsibility to make sure that no lines are crossed, and CWN absolutely maintains that boundary. Before the time skip, there is not a single instance of sexual contact between them that was not initiated (or forced upon CWN) by Mo Ran.
When it comes to CWN’s feelings towards Mo Ran, yes, they are soft, and yes, they are deep, and yes, even idealistically romantic, but everything about them is just so… innocent. All it ever amounts to is, ‘If I had a better temper, and if I was more beautiful, or if I was not so old, then maybe I could hope he could love me!’ But he never ever acts upon it. He does not think it is even an option for him. In fact, the book makes a point of underlining that he makes sure not to burden Mo Ran with his feelings.
There is absolutely no grooming going on here, CWN keeps his love well hidden, to the point that for the longest time, Mo Ran thinks he does not even like him. In addition, CWN is ashamed of his feelings. He is well aware of the master/disciple taboo, he thinks his feelings are dirty and inappropriate and he does his absolute best to suppress them, to the point where these thoughts don’t even get the chance to fully form before he squashes them.
Another important thing to mention here is that CWN was was raised by a monk and that his cultivation path was one of abstinence. Left to his own devices, sex with Mo Ran (or anyone else, for that matter) would never have happened. Another sad aspect of this whole thing is that CWN is utterly inexperienced, he has no idea how sex between men is even supposed to work, until Taxian-jun gets a hold of him. In his second life, the only reason he has any sexual thoughts at all is because of his explicit dreams involving adult!Mo Ran, which are not really dreams, but memories of a very thorough sexual education forced upon him by Taxian-jun. It is also important to note that CWN is very ashamed of what he thinks is a product of his own dirty mind and that he takes extra measures to make sure that he maintains an appropriate distance between himself and Mo Ran.
I think it is no coincidence that CWN’s sexual attraction towards Mo Ran comes to the forefront after the time-skip. It is pretty clear that CWN is suddenly all hot and bothered and cannot control his boners only after Mo Ran has fully grown into an adult. It is obvious that he gets hard for the adult man in a way he never did for the boy. Another important aspect of the time-skip is that a lot of Mo Ran’s character growth and maturing (mental and emotional) takes place during this time, apart from Chu Wanning, which creates this huge dissonance in CWN’s brain and also eliminates the inevitable squickiness that would have resulted from him lusting after someone that he personally raised to adulthood.
And all this is without even getting into what TXJ did to him when he captured him. CWN was so unwilling, it took a lot of time and extended torture before TXJ forced him to cooperate in bed. Even Mo Ran 1.0 was extremely predatory towards CWN, though he did eventually grow himself a moral compass after the time skip, and though the instincts to just hold CWN down and take him were still there, he had learned the importance of consent. When it comes to their sexual relationship, there is not a single moment where Mo Ran was not the one pulling all the strings.
Anyway, TL;DR Chu Wanning never did a single thing wrong in his entire life.

Erha volume 9 spoilers
Idk why I somehow expected it to be different this time round (something I read ages ago when I read the awful mtl about that scene being removed) but I hate that last scene in vol 9 coz it felt like we were actually seeing some proper character development with TXJ, seeing him change. Like with him choosing to not SA Chu Wanning on Mt Jiao coz he saw how injured he was, being affected by Chu Wanning saying he'd never let him die first, being affected by drunk Mengmeng being nice to him, kowtowing at the lake... he was *changing*, becoming sympathetic despite everything he'd done. Like the turmoil in his mind as the foundations of his life, everything he has believed, for 20 years start to crumble, damn it must've been hell
But then... nah let's throw all that out the window in favour of an even more graphic SA scene than the incense burner in the cave
And like I've *defended* the sex/SA scenes in this series so much coz I felt unlike a lot of media where they're just gratuitous, in Erha they're actually instrumental in both character and plot development.
But this one... it goes so against the development of TXJ. It feels similar to when Game of Thrones ended with Jaime Lannister going back to Cersei and throwing away years of character development
Don't get me wrong I still love Erha and everything, but this was frustrating

Danmei couples on the prospect of switching who tops and bottoms:
Ranwan: Mo Ran would be willing to try it, because he'd do anything to please his shizun and the idea of being fucked by Chu Wanning is intriguing, but Chu Wanning would absolutely categorically refuse to even try it and he might catch fire at the mere suggestion. Even after two years of living together the man still needs a blindfold just to bear the embarrassment of receiving oral sex, he absolutely does not have the face for topping (besides, he enjoys the feeling of being overpowered and helpless far too much - not that he'd ever admit it)
Bingqiu: Luo Binghe is DESPERATE for his shizun to fuck him but, much like Chu Wanning, Shen Qingqiu really cannot handle the thought of it. But Binghe's gonna keep playing the puppy dog face and tears card till he gets what he wants
Hualian: there's a recurring theme here... Again, Hua Cheng would happily do anything his gege wants; he loves worshipping his god by fucking him to incoherence, but he would be equally as ecstatic to receive his god's blessing. But Xie Lian... maybe one day
Wangxian: famously shameless Wei Wuxian could easily top Lan Wangji if he wanted to. He just doesn't particularly want to. He enjoys himself FAR too much being a bratty pillow princess for that. And Lan Wangji enjoys bringing him to heel and then spoiling him rotten.
XiMang: like Wangxian, they *could* go the other way, but they're both very happy with the roles they already play.

I just came across this in a Reddit post and just ????
"Evil ways"????
"Always pretending to be the victim" ????
This, about a woman who was *literally being sold at auction* to a load of people who wanted to r*pe and/or EAT her?
A woman whose entire existence has been about *surivival* because she exists in a world of butchers who see her as less than human, as a resource to being consumed
And in this timeline, she has literally done NOTHING wrong. Even if she made an attempt to win over Nangong Si, can you blame her, really? The heir to the most powerful sect - as his wife, no one would dare touch her, she'd be the safest she can ever be. And we don't actually even have any evidence that it was her trying to win him over (but even if it was, he had a choice??) But Mo Ran forced her into a corner so she had no choice but to accuse Ye Wangxi of that. Again, her *survival* depends on it. But nah she's doing it to just "save face"??? Jfc
When was she ever manipulative? In the first timeline, she didn't manipulate Mo Ran, she actually thought he *loved her* when he was just using her for her face because she looked like Shi Mei.
Betraying Rufeng Sect nah obvs that's not good, nor is when she tortured Chu Wanning. But again: SURVIVAL. As Taxian-jun's wife—who again, she thought actually loved her—she would be safe from all the people who want to r*pe and eat her. She was following Mo Ran's lead on ChuWanning, since Mo Ran never shut up about how much he hated him. I love Chu Wanning so obviously I hate what she did, but it's understandable *why* she did it.
Mo Ran treats her cruelly beyond measure in both lifetimes - he fuckin COOKED HER ALIVE and that was *after* he'd beende-flowered. And then he goes after her in the second life with utmost cruelty (he doesn't even want her saved at the auction, he'd be happy for her to be sold as a sex slave or a meal) and utterly ruins her life (leading to another horrible death)
And yet it's her that gets dragged through the mud and called "evil" and all this other bullshit, while Mo Ran, both in the books and in large swathes of the fandom, gets off absolutely scot free with what he does to her both times
Idk if it's some crazy internalised misogyny or wtf it is but it's bad

Idk I think you kinda have to bear in mind the position Shi Mei/Hua Binan was in. No he didn't see most other people as human: he saw them as potential rapists and butchers. Because he *had* to just to survive. Saying "Oh but xyz person wouldn't have done that" is like saying # NotAllCultivators. We as the reader know that CWN, the Xues etc would protect Shi Mei if they knew, but it's just too big of a gamble to him. Remember this is a man who saw his own father *eating his mother alive* after he found out what she was. How could he possibly trust *anyone* but his sister after that? And he absolutely doesn't just care about himself, so even if he did tell them and was thus protected, the rest of his people weren't. Idk where this idea that he doesn't actually care about the other BBBFs has come from?? His whole live has been about saving them, just as his mother's was. He tried to save Song Qiutong (he is wayyyyy down the list of people who wronged her), and even when he realised that he couldn't enter the demon realm and safety, he didn't give up; he *gave his life* holding the doors open to make sure every last BBBF made it through. He died for the cause.
Hua Binan is such a fantastic character because he isn't black and white (no one really is in Erha). He commits horrific crimes, but he has no choice if he wants to save his people from horrific crimes.
That's not to say he is absolved of guilt. And as for his attempted rape of Chu Wanning, well, there is absolutely no excuse for that, and it also seems kind of an odd choice by Meatbun tbh, considering as a BBBF Hua Binan makes a point of despising cannibalism, you'd assume that would extend to rape too. It almost felt like it was put in to stop the reader sympathising with Shi Mei too much or something, idk. But the fact is he does it and for the first time in my life I was relieved when TXJ appeared lol (shame he had to spoil that with raping CWN himself again later in Wushan Palace but 🙃)
Anyway I don't really understand why there needs to be a war between "stans" of characters, like can we really not just all appreciate the depth and complexity of these characters?
I can understand and respect Mo Ran not letting himself off the hook for what he did as TXJ. I agree that he shouldn’t before he knows it wasn’t his fault, and even though it hurts that he might still not after, I get it. He can’t be who he is, someone who really cares a lot, and forget about it just like that. He’d rather take too much responsibility than risk shirking any.
But that’s his perspective. I need everyone else to understand that he would have had to be a LITERAL bodhisattva to have avoided it, and that is just not a reasonable expectation to have of anyone, let alone a 15 year old, let alone one who had been hurt to that extent. To never have a vengeful or hateful thought? No one could do it, so if we can’t have mercy on Mo Ran, then who? Does everyone really only get one shot at doing life perfectly, and if they ever mess up they have to live in shame forever? How can we live that way?

Erha is similar to SVSSS (ridiculously OP and kinda insane disciple obsessed with his thin-faced shizun)
Yuwu is similar to MDZS (grumpy aloof one is sweet for the sunshine one who's been through hella trauma but still smiling and joking)
Therefore, I'm expecting BAB to be sweet and wholesome similar to TGCF
🙂
