New York Fashion Week

Fashion Week allows designers to showcase their latest collections on the runway. The major Fashion Weeks are held in the “Big Four” fashion capitals: Milan, Paris, London, and New York. This year, the New York Fashion Week runways provided some insight about the trends that we can expect to see during 2022. Graphic patterns are a design that keeps growing in popularity. We can expect to see more clothing items featuring these designs in the near future. Fashion Week also reenforced the prevalence of the Y2K look with low rise pants and halter tops. Other trends that were seen include sheer material, feathers, and heavy fringe.

Air Dior

Nike and Dior came together in 2020 to release the Air Dior line. This collaboration is one that made history, as it was the first time that Jordan partnered with a high end fashion label. Nike’s Jordan 1s are a shoe that started sneaker culture. The iconic design of the shoe was kept for this project, with Dior adding its own luxurious signature elements to it. With only 8,500 pairs of the shoe being released, it retailed at $2,000. However, it is currently being resold for as much as $25,000. The Air Dior line was modeled by rapper Travis Scott.

Met Gala

The Met Gala, often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute’s annual fundraising Gala. Taking place in New York City, the 2021 Met Gala theme was In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.

Two looks that stood out to me from this year’s Met Gala were Kendall Jenner’s and Rihanna’s. Kendall wore a sheer dress by Givenchy. The crystals on the dress definitely stood out to me and added something special to the look. Rihanna’s dress was a great take on the theme of America. She explained that her Balenciaga coat resembles a hoodie, which is what the Black community is often incriminated by. This was a great opportunity to empower it and spark meaningful conversation about issues that need to be resolved.

Streetwear

Street style rose to popularity in the 1990s. This casual style often consists of graphic tees, sneakers, jeans, printed pants, and caps. Since then, luxury brands have also taken on this style. Popular high-end streetwear brands include KITH, Off-White, Stüssy, Supreme, and Bape. Collaborations between brands have also been prevalent, with Nike and Off-White sneaker collaborations being resold for thousands of dollars. The streetwear look is often characterized by baggy and oversized clothes. The current trends that make up this effortless look include matching track sets, lightning pants, patchwork pants, flannels, varsity jackets, and blazers. This street style is easy to achieve and perfect for a casual day out in the city!

Y2K Fashion

Fashion trends from the mid 90s to the early 2000s are once again quickly rising in popularity. This style, referred to as Y2K, can be identified through low rise jeans, rhinestones, small purses, pleated skirts, denim and brands such as Von Dutch, Ed Hardy, and Juicy Couture. Some of the style’s influences include Bratz Dolls and movies such as Mean Girls and Legally Blonde. To complete the Y2K fashion look, one may accessorize with items such as colorful sunglasses, butterfly hair clips, space buns, or a fuzzy hat. The cute and fun nostalgic style, often characterized by bubblegum pink, has been gaining popularity through platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Many celebrities and influencers have been taking part in this trend, causing it to further rise is popularity. It looks like we will continue to be seeing these looks in the near future!
