Alex Craig - 10 Races for Sarah: 10 cross-country races & a marathon
Hello, my name is Alex Craig. I am from Leeds but am currently in my first yearstudying fine art at Central Saint Martins, London. As you may know, my legs and I are raising money for cancer charities by competing in a series of runs throughout 2015, culminating in a marathon before the year’s end. I am running Ten Races For Sarah in 2015 and raising money for four different charities -Breast Cancer Campaign, Macmillan, Prostate Cancer UK and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

My mother and friend, Margaret, are both survivors of breast cancer. My father is a survivor of prostate cancer. My friend, Dave, is a cancer survivor. Another friend, Dan, is a survivor of testicular cancer. My friend Duncan, also had testicular cancer but sadly died March 2013. My friend Dan’s wife, Vicky, was sadly taken by cancer in October 2013. My auntie Sally Evans died of multi-organ failure January 2014. The list goes on.
My sister, Sarah, survived leukemia aged sixteen but died of lung cancer November 21st 2013 in Sobel House, North-West London, shielded nicely in-between two of her siblings birthdays – one of my older brother’s on the 20th and my own on the 22nd. What I have set myself is tough but it is nothing compared to what cancer sufferers and their friends and families go through.

I need your support and I know you are all poor but if you all donated just £1 by text message it will bring me ever closer to my targets and I’d be pleased as piss. It only takes a few seconds to do and I’m sure you won’t miss the price of a can of larger/cider/whatever. I have signed-up for nine races between 6 – 13 miles in length so far
The Eliminator, February 7th, South London – 10 miles
British Military Fitness Major Series, March 15th, Leeds – 8 miles
Jane Tomlinson Leeds Half Marathon, May 15th – 13 miles
Total Warrior x 6: June 27/28, Leeds; August 1/2, Lake District; September 12/13, Edinburgh – 6-10 miles each
I will compete in at least ten cross-country races and a full marathon - 26 miles – before the end of 2015.
Four separate Just Giving pages are now online so please give generously, people.
I will be updating my progress and writing unique shout outs to every donor on my Facebook. Thank you all xxx

EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY: CALLING ALL STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES

Calling all students and the recent graduates, we are looking for wall based art submissions based around the experience and issues that LGBTQ students face in the Creative Industries.
The Exhibition will be part of a series of events called ‘Unspoken Barriers: LGBTQ, Understanding Duality’ that will involve a panel discussion, a film screening and an exhibition.
Imagine Clark Kent doing some mundane tasks at the office by day and by night, he becomes Superman, all dressed in spandex ready to protect the world. This idea of ‘duality’ could resonate with some LGBTQ students who may be unsure if they have to hide their identity at work. In the creative industries, presumably filled with open minded people, is there a need to live a double life like Clark Kent?
The exhibition will be taking place Monday 26th January 2015- Tuesday 10th February 2015 and will be located in the Darkroom Gallery in LCC.
Deadline for submissions: Wednesday 21st January 2015, 12pm
Installation date: Friday 23rd January 2015
Take down date: Tuesday 10th February 2015
To submit your idea please email [email protected] with your name, contact details, pictures of your work and dimensions, plus any installation notes. Please also submit 100 words on why your work interacts with the theme of LGBTQ student experience.
Due to the nature of the spaces we cannot consider installation pieces; however some small plinth work or projections may be possible.
This will be a public exhibition so please no images that can be deemed offensive. You will need to be able to come and install your own artwork on the installation date and take it down on the take down date. By taking part in the exhibition you should be aware that the artwork is in a public walkway and you will remain responsible for your own artwork.
For further information or questions please email Bee Tajudeen, [email protected] or Roxana Negru, [email protected]

FREE MODERN LANGUAGE PILOT AT LCC
Hi, I’m Bee Tajudeen, the Vice President for LCC students and I am passionate about providing language learning opportunities for LCC students.
Have you ever wanted to learn a modern language?
Did the price of modern language courses ever hold you back from enrolling on one?
If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to these questions, then look no further as we bring you great news. We have successfully secured funding from Natalie Brett, head of LCC, to do a pilot for a free modern language class at LCC. This pilot would be starting in January and it will last for 10 weeks.
I have put together a questionnaire which I would appreciate if you could spend a few minutes filling it in. This will help us find out how many students are interested to be part of the pilot, which modern languages you want to learn and ways of getting students to be engaged with the course. Although only 20 lucky students will be able to take part in this pilot, if it runs successfully, there may be a possibility in the future that more students can become involved.
This is a great opportunity to make yourself more employable, as knowing an additional modern language gives you a competitive advantage in the job market place. Additionally, you will be able to make use of the language you learn when going abroad on holiday, while also improving the functionality of your brain.
Omlette au fromage anyone?

Out of credit for printing? Come and print in colour for free at the SU
Well, now you can print your work for free, yes FREE, and, in colour at the SUARTS office in High Holborn.
Aiwip recently installed their free printer next to reception, check out their website for more information and details of how you can print your things for free.
A Chelsea course rep last year presented the Dean with a document that showed University of the Arts being one of the most expensive places to print in the UK. Surprising seeing as we have to print the most amount of things for sketchbooks and projects… The average monthly spend for a UAL student on printing a month is £33.30, so a term you are looking at nearly £100!
Last year there was a big push from the Students’ Union to the university to lower the cost of printing. The final outcome was that they were given three options:
1.) Make it free
2.) Make it cheaper
3.) Do nothing
They pretty much went for the third and slightly lowered b&w printing, because of this we now have this FREE printer!

Come and give it a go, see you soon.
For anyone that hasn’t been to our office yet - you can find us here:
1st Floor, Students’ Union, 272 High Holborn, WC1V 7EY
[The one criticism I have is of their sign up form which asks you to input your gender and then gives you an option of ‘male/female’ - error! I will be emailing them to get them to change this up soon so hold tight!]

UAL colleges are equipped with great facilities - and here’s a specific account of those on offer at LCC. Whilst you can generally only use the facilities for your course at your college, there’s no reason not to be inspired by this approach to those available!
