4 Reasons Why ‘Spy’ is Amazing
Just randomly dashing off some thoughts because I loved it so much.
It takes its lead character seriously. Susan Cooper is the butt of a few jokes for being hapless or put upon, but, for the most part, she’s incredibly capable and good at what she does. She has good instincts. She doesn’t need to be put through some kind of spy boot camp. She already has all the tools necessary at her disposal. She thinks well on her feet. She’s fighter. She’s a relatively well put-together professional who’s already taken steps to better her life before the movie even opens. She doesn’t need a makeover. In fact, she’s given a make UNDER by higher ups in the CIA who underestimate her ability to blend in while in the field. The comedy doesn’t come from her haphazardly stumbling through interactions and action set pieces, it comes from the interactions and set pieces themselves. Susan Cooper is most successful when she listens to her own instincts instead of the people trying to mold her into their underestimated perceptions of her.
It takes its leading actress seriously. The movie never once feels like it needs to justify why Melissa McCarthy is such a capable fighter. The action set pieces are staged exactly like they would be in any international spy thriller, and the movie trusts the audience to buy Melissa McCarthy as an action hero. There are funny buttons in the middle of or at the end of action scenes, but never at the expense of undermining her expertise. There’s no magic tablet stuck in her brain to give her super human abilities or hypnosis technique or any of that. She’s just a bad ass. Plus, it introduces a character (or maybe even more than one) attracted to her and does so without once going for the easy joke of wondering why he would be pursuing her or the easy self-righteous condescension of commenting on how progressive its being by treating McCarthy as an attractive woman. It treats it matter-of-factly, and the comedy doesn’t come from the fact that men would be attracted to her, it comes from HOW they act on it.
It takes itself seriously .... enough. This movie actually has a plot. A plot that actually makes as much sense as this kind of international espionage plot can make. There are actual stakes. I don’t mean that there’s a nuclear warhead. I mean that there’s forward momentum, and we understand what people are doing and why and are expected to care about it outside of just as a joke delivery system. The plot isn’t slapped together out of improv. Some care was put into actually telling a compelling story. And because we know what characters’ motivations are and we’re invested in seeing them carried out (or not), the humor has more impact. It’s a comedy and a capable spy film all in one! There are plenty James Bond movies that take their plots less seriously than Spy.
It’s hilarious. Duh. Everyone is at the top of their game here. Everyone.

Any of you who were watching The Quest have no one but yourself to blame for me not watching if you didn't tell me about this.

JLaw should follow ScarJo's lead and just release a statement about how hot she looks in her nudes.
