i love the way that angels in america portrays religion. when i first found this play, i was a recently-out lesbian angry at god and organized religion, and i found solace in the way it portrays the absence of god.

more recently, i have realized that while yes, god is absent here, this is less a statement on god’s existence and more a reflection of how we live every day. when you cannot see, hear, or feel goodness, how do you seek out goodness? how do you continue to do good? how do you find the energy to beg for more life? what is the purpose of that life?
