Hello Julian, I would like to make substruction pattern cutting dress out of old jeans. But not sure if thick fabric would be suitable? Thank you for your feedback. Lucie.

Denim can be quite heavy but it is possible to use less material, less long, narrower, more body hugging, and perhaps use holes which when subtracted become incorporated back into the garment (such as sleeve or collar shaped subtractions), or which use slashes instead of holes so that there are is no real subtraction or waste. Every garment is a unique problem to solve, so it’s hard to tell you what to do, but yes it can conceivably be done! Good luck ✌️

Hi Julian. I'm interested in your workshop in Australia. I have done a workshop with you when you came to Melbourne in 2014. You'll come to Sunshine Coast and Geelong this time. Which is the best workshop do you think for me to choose, if I'm not super novice? Reverse Sub-Cut or the other one? I'd like to learn advanced one. Chiggy

The Geelong one starts basic and gets more in depth over a longer period. If you’ve explored SC before you can go as deep as you want and i’ll offer advice to help you get there. The Sunshine Coast workshop will be more suitable for people who have never tried Subtraction Cutting. All the best Chiggy from India✌️

I am teaching students at the School of Fashion Technology in Pune 23-26th April, these classes are for SOFT students and staff only. If you want to attend a class in Mumbai (or anywhere else in India) you’ll need to ask a school or art group to invite me as i only cut where i am invited!✂️ Fingers crossed you can one day join a class🙏

Hello do you have an online course or DVD for people who can't attend your class physically. Thanks

No. Subtraction Cutting is learned in real life ONLY either by attending my class to watch me cut and hear me talk in person, or by attending a class lead by one of the many teachers around the world i have taught. These teachers may start their own online classes perhaps, but i do not officially certify them as i don’t think they are a sufficient way to learn Subtraction Cutting. I resist publishing ‘idiot guides to SC’ myself because i think they reduce the subject by limiting experimentation and risk taking. Instead anyone can download a free copy of my book ‘FREE CUTTING’ without charge and decipher my techniques through practice, trial and error. This is a good starting point for curious learners. Serious learners need seek me out in person. I travel anywhere in the world I am invited. Good luck and enjoy piecing the puzzles together!:)

The pattern is now renamed the ‘Rika-Adriana’ tunnel dress 🇪🇸🇬🇧
