Counter to the commercial materialism of Barbie, Mattel designed the Sunshine Family in the mid 1970s. They were simple and their accessories were country themed. They came with a booklet of do it yourself crafts and furniture to make. I loved mine!

Scarabs are an important part of Egyptian archaeology. The bracelets became very popular in the 1960′s and continue to be today. They are characterized by tiny symbols etched into glass or stones of different colors. I am listing a variety of scarab jewelry in my shop this week.

The real Carrie, Mary and Laura Ingalls. Laura was 14, Mary 16 and Carrie 11 years old about 1881 after the Long Winter.
The photograph tells a lot. The girls wear matching dresses; made from the same bolt of fabric. Gingham was cheap and wore well. It would make sense that Ma probably got a good price on the fabric and made both dresses. She changed up the dresses a bit by adding different ribbons to the neck. Carrie’s dress is surprisingly fancy and different than the others, using a lot of buttons. If you look closely you can see that the buttons alternate in color. It would be unlikely that the family would have purchased twenty buttons for decoration on a dress, and most likely Carrie’s dress came in the “Christmas barrel” that Laura talked about coming on the train from the East after the snows cleared. The dress is clearly too large for her small and frail frame. Laura always described Carrie as being small and weak as a child; prone to terrible headaches. Around her neck is a little necklace that looks like shells or beads, and her light brown hair is tied back with a ribbon.
Both girls stand with a hand either on Mary or on the back of her chair. At the time, they would have been required to stand very still for a very long time for the film exposure. The slight blur on Laura’s face, compared to Mary’s was the result of a slight movement. About a year earlier, Ma and Pa Ingalls had a photograph taken of their infant “Grace”. It was the first photo of any of their children and was most likely prompted by the ten month old baby that the family had lost a couple of years earlier. But they would not photograph their other girls for another year. Photography was expensive at the time and this was no doubt a very special investment.

The last of the vintage “breakfast propaganda” ads this Tuesday morning..., “Ovaltine” drink has been around for generations. Originally developed in the early 1900′s, it consisted of dried milk, eggs, barley and chocolate flavoring. It was touted as a health food for young, old and everyone in between. The name “Ovaltine” comes from “ovum” (egg). Amazing with just those few ingredients, according to this ad, one could get all of those foods pictured in the little box all in one! Ovaltine tastes a lot better today and contains different ingredients, but still retains “barley” as a main one.

Vintage 1930s March Easter ad featuring the Canadian Dionne Quintuplets. Karo Syrup: Rich in Dextrose (translation - “rich in sugar”) The ideal carbohydrate! :) The statement in the box was by Dr Dafoe, the Quints’ personal physician and guardian after the government took them away from their parents for the purpose of exploiting them.

I really like cookie presses. Something about them always reminds me of making cookies in the 1970s with my mom at Christmas. Here is a vintage Swedish one with 16 discs. We also have other presses and cookie cutter lots for the holidays. Happy baking!
