Welcome to Subway Depths!

I created a new AU based off a "what-if" scenario of the Phantom Thieves losing to Yaldabaoth in Persona 5, and becoming trapped in the Shibuya Subway/Mementos, Undertale style! Here's some info about the AU: After a defeat against Yaldabaoth, the Phantom Thieves, as well their social links, are sealed in Mementos. For years, Yaldy searches for the remaining Persona users and social links, with the final one being Takuto Maruki, who was forced into accepting his Persona without a contract or agreement, as it was interrupted by Yaldaboath’s rule over the world. This caused Azathoth, and eventually Maruki to go completely insane. Maruki is forced to watch his newfound power be out of his control, resetting the world back to the state it was when Azathoth was forced into him, and it drove him mad seeing everyone suffer in Mementos. Maruki adopts an attitude of “If I can’t save them, I’ll just have ‘fun’ with them” (Kill or be killed). 14 years later, in 2030, a 27-year-old Frisk wakes up from a coma. She had a dream of a butterfly reaching out to her, begging for help… When she woke up with a voice ringing in her head. She didn’t know it at the time, but by agreeing to the voice, she had awoken to a Persona herself, despite being the only real being left in a world full of cognitive copies and shadows. The protagonist fights their way through Shibuya, wondering what happened to the world she left 14 years ago. When her phone drained out of battery after several hours, an app appeared on it, despite it not being functional. She presses said app out of curiosity, and ends up walking through what was supposed to be a sealed barrier to the former Yongen-Jaya subway. Now finding herself in a new world, she’s greeted by a man in a strange, torn lab coat.

Each original character from Undertale is represented by a character or more of the same Arcana from the Persona series. Here are the roles (Everyone is 18+ or more due to timeskip reasons):

Toriel - Mitsuru, Haru (Empress)

Asgore - Hidetoshi, Kanji, Yusuke (Emperor)

Undyne - Rise, Yukari, Ann (Lovers)

Alphys - Futaba, Saori (Hermit)

Muffet - Sumire Yoshizawa (Faith)

Grillby - Sojiro, Dojima, Zenkichi (Hierophant/Apostle)

River Person - Sophia (Hope)

Amalgamates - Ren, Yu, Makoto Yuki, Kotone (Turned insane from Yaldaboath being able to amplify their guilt they couldn’t defeat him [Ren], Fused with Izanami [Yu], Seal merged into Nyx herself [Yuki], Brought from her failed world timeline, amplified guilt [Kotone]) (All are major boss fights and must be saved in order to help the protagonist save them all.)

Other characters are welcome in any interpretation of the story! Arcanas represent SOUL traits in this AU, as well as there being new areas to replace the ones from Undertale!:

And finally, here's Takuto Maruki's backstory, the only one that I'd like to keep mostly in tact for any version of this AU: Takuto Maruki - The only one left with a real Persona. He gained it during the Thieves’ fight with Yaldy, but Azathoth was forcefully put onto Maruki before Maruki truly accepted him due to the PT failing, thus making Maruki eternal, and having a Persona bound by no contract or awakening. Can alter reality just like in canon, but now also Azathoth can rewind time to the Thieves’ defeat, without Maruki’s consent, and doing so brings Maruki immense pain and suffering, and as each timeline is reset, the memories of seeing everyone trapped and suffering drive him mad, adopting a similar “kill or be killed” attitude to Flowey rather than trying to “save” those suffering like he does in canon.

I decided to make this a public AU for anyone to use and write for/do media for as they see fit, but I had never seen anybody do a real take on if Yaldy won or if P5 was crossed over with Undertale, so I thought I'd do both!
