If ten lamps are present in place,

each differs in form from another :

To distinguish without any doubt the light of each, when you turn your face towards their light, is impossible.

If you count a hundred apples or a hundred quinces,

they do not remain a hundred become one, when you crush them.

In things spiritual there is no division and no numbers;

in things spiritual -there is no partition and no individuals.

Sweet is the oneness of the Friend with His friends:

catch the foot of spirit. Form is headstrong.

Make headstrong form waste away with tribulation,

that beneath it you may descry unity, like a treasure;

And if you waste it not away, His favours will waste it—

oh, my heart is His vassal.

He even shows Himself to hearts,

He sews the tattered frock of the dervish

Simple were we and all one substance;

we were all without head and without foot yonder.

We were one substance, like the Sun;

we were knotless and pure, like water.

When that goodly Light took form,

it became number like the shadows of a battlement.

Raze the battlement with the catapult (manjaniq)

that difference may vanish from amidst this company.

I would have explained this with contention,

but I fear lest some mind may stumble.

A DREAM

Asleep: A storm blew through my emptiness,

reminding me of pleasures now long past.

You flashed your eyes. O Moon! They pierced my chest.

You spoke the words, and so my heart was blessed.

You filled me with desire, gave me a taste.

When you drew near, I smiled at your embrace.

A beggar, I gave thanks to be so base.

My master, you gave me your noble grace!

You sang to me at night: You taught me well.

You came: That was the end of me. I fell.

Then, when you left , my hair turned white as well.

We’ll never part. Our union’s here today.

Your love raised me so high, as just you may.

But when you came, I was your hunted prey.

You shot your arrow—you killed me that day.

Th at death was my cure and my salvation.

You’re a Moon of bright stars! Crown on display,

you rose in the East, changed night into day.

A victory! I woke and saw my Lord!

My soul! Look up! and now take your reward.

My eyes! He’s gone. You blinked, and he broke free.

Do not you threaten me with being killed,

for I thirst lamentably for mine own blood.”

For lovers, there is a dying at every moment:

truly, the dying of lovers is not of one sort.

He has two hundred souls from the Soul of Guidance, and those two hundred he is sacrificing at every instant.

For each soul he receives ten as its price: read from the Qur’an “ten like unto them.”

If that One of friendly countenance shed my blood, dancing I will scatter my soul upon Him.

I have tried it: my death is in life: when I escape from this life, it is to endure forever.

“Kill me; kill me, O trusty friends!

Lo, in my being killed is life on life.”

O You that makes the cheek radiant, O Spirit of everlastingness,

draw my spirit to Yourself and generously bestow on me the meeting.

I have a Beloved whose love roasts the bowels:

if He wished to walk upon mine eye, He would walk.

Speak Persian, though Arabic is sweeter:

Love indeed has a hundred other tongues.

When the scent of that Charmer of hearts begins to fly, all those tongues become dumbfounded

I will cease: the Sweetheart has begun to speak, be ear—and God best knows the right course.

Union is a watery way.

In an eye, the point of light.

In the chest, the soul.

The place where ecstatic lovers go

is called the tavern, where everyone gambles,

and whoever loses has to live there.

So, my love, even if you are the pattern

of time's orderly passage, do not go,

or if you do, wear a disguise.

But do not cover your chest.

Stay open there.

Someone asks me, What is love?

Do not look for an explanation.

Dissolve into me, and you will know

when it calls. Respond.

Walk out as a lion, as a rose.

Inhale autumn, long for spring.

You that change the dull field,

who give conversation to damaged ears,

make dying alive, award guardianship

to the wandering mind,

you who erase the five senses at night,

who give eyes allure and a blood clot wisdom,

Lose your life, if you seek eternity.

THE DANCE OF YOUR HIDDEN LIFE

Move your hair in the light.

Let it scatter amber,

as the souls of sufis begin

to dance, sun, moon, and stars,

around us in a circle.

We are dancing their dance.

A slight melody

enters the great wheel

and helps it turn.

A spring breeze makes everyone laugh.

Autumn wakes from his dead sleep.

Rose and thorn pair up.

Many people are dancing with snakes.

The orchard king from his secret center

says, Welcome to your hidden life.

They move together,

the cypress and the bud of the lily,

the willow and the flowering judas.

Ladders have been set up

around the garden,

so that everyone’s eyes lift.

A songbird sits on a branch

like the kind man who guards the treasury,

and has just been paid from it.

Shoots emerge from a dark core.

The new leaves are tongues.

The fruit, our growing,

collective heart.

As they begin to form,

these apples, peaches, pears, and plums,

we understand what our tongues

have been doing.
