I liked nothing more on a fine weekend afternoon than to retire to the green to recline with a book, and had been working through the novels of Wilde and E.M.Forster, to whom I felt an instant connection. At the height of midsummer I could not really stay for more than a half hour in case my legs were to become burned. The attire my father insisted I wear came with hazards as well as benefits. Some days I would be fortunate and remain unmolested, either by unwelcome heat or uninvited strangers impeding my quiet progress.

I got used to dressing like this on Sundays, until I was eighteen years of age. It was as normal for me as it was my much younger brothers.

I'm only pretending to read. I've seen that you're looking over this way, and I know what you're thinking - "Is that boy really wearing grey shorts and long socks? Isn't he a bit old for them?"
The answer to both questions is yes, but the shorts are part of my uniform. Your third question - I am guessing, is "His legs look unusually smooth… is he made to keep them so by having to shave them?" and again the answer is... Yes, I do.

I always put the bag down next to me these days. I want the bench, and this time, to myself. A couple of times in the past someone would come along and sit down, they'd pretend to read a book but they'd constantly be looking across at my legs.
