Week 13 Reflection
Caiqin Guo- s3781225
It’s nearing the end of the semester, I have benefited a lot this semester. After receiving the latest feedback, I have made improvements. The previous soundtrack seemed not obvious enough after 1:22 seconds, and it was not enough to achieve a tense situation. I added additional sounds to create and visually coordinate. I added additional layers to add this music. I made it in Ableton. The music BPM is adjusted to a very low level, about 50%. The purpose of lowering the BPM is to make the audio slower to achieve a terrifying effect. Secondly, I exported the music made in Ableton and then edited it in AU in more detail, in order to better match the vision and make the sound more coherent. I added some sounds to signal that new things are about to happen, I improved the situation of flattening out the emotion by just doing the same thing by adding more sounds to heighten it.

This semester, I mainly learned how to use different instruments to highlight the selected words (exhilarating, terrifying) and the collocation and mixing of instruments, research transitions, remixes, and references. The two words I chose are completely opposite. One is higher arousal valence positive pleasant music. whereas terrifying is an unpleasant sound. I also write detailed research and weekly reflection in my weekly blog every week. How to make music, and screenshots and drafts.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the progress of this semester. This semester I learned how to increase the heightened Multisensory experience through audiovisual. Through this semester, I have improved the audio many times in order to achieve good results and visuals. In the two projects(Exhilarating and terrifying), I spent a lot of time and effort trying to achieve a satisfactory state. In the early stage, I researched the different elements to highlight the heightened. I believe that with the experience of this semester, I hope I can learn more software in the future. This semester my team members and I worked very well, we communicate frequently, we give each other valuable feedback, and make sure that the audio-visuals work well together. Once we receive feedback from either Shaun or Darrin, we will make improvements directly. Even under lockdown situations we still support each other, get through a hard time of not being able to do a face-to-face collaboration.

Week 12 Reflection
Caiqin Guo- s3781225
This week I had consulted with Darrin on Thursday, I got very useful feedback this week, during week12 I am still trying to make the music sound more horrible, spooky, and compatible with the visual because I know that the role of music and sound effects is to highlight the video so that the entire audiovisual can work better as one. Shaun thinks that the music should be simpler, I will make sure that I can achieve simple music while being heightened so that the audience feels terrible and gloomy. Shaun also suggested that I should remove some sound effects, such as the sound of monsters. Shaun hopes that the audience will not know what will happen in the next scene, which may make people feel more scared.
This is the latest draft
Shaun also suggested that Monica can delete some unnecessary scenes, such as ghosts and horrible claws, in the last scene. Shaun thinks The video can be an open ending that allows the audience to imagine what will happen next, so I also want to progress the music according to the final version modified by Monica. However, Shaun was quite satisfied with our visuals in these several consultations and gave beneficial suggestions. Darrin also agrees that my background music can be a little simpler, don't superimpose all the elements together. The music feels like jumping around more than it needs to, I have all the elements but is too much so I need to take some out. Also suggested with the Spotify playlist as inspirations. simple ambient background sound can also make the jump scare stand out more, to achieve a heightened terrible atmosphere.
My plan for next week, I will make improvements based on the feedback received, I need to consider how to set up a mood that can draw audiences into a horror world and make the audiences feel apprehensive, In some of the horror movies I have watched in the past, they use tension and weird sounds to scare audiences, The sudden roar, the sound of a baby crying. These can lead the audience to think about what will happen next. I think appropriate sound effects can play a very good role. Usually, these sound effects seem to hint at what may happen next. I also need to consider something more subliminal and subtle in order to get dynamic range so I can get a shock and jump scare. I also need to consider something more subliminal and subtle in order to get dynamic range so I can get a shock and jump scare. Now I will focus on making a relatively simple and minimal ambient and texture but still spooky, eerie to invested a fear world, and also make better use of the synthesizer, reverb, etc. to highlight the horror atmosphere, Darrin recommended I watch wolf creek, fast forward to where the main characters are around the campfire, and listen to how sparse that material is, mainly listen to track 9 'the shed'. I had a listen to the soundtrack and I have more sense of what kind of ambient sound I would create for our video, which is helpful.

Week 11 reflection
Caiqin Guo- s3781225
This week I had consulted with Darrin and received some feedback. The feedback given by Darrin is that the sound is more generic, Darrin feels that the visual is not strong enough. Monica needs to improve the visual in order for me to go more detailed in sound. The Sound production has traditional terrifying effects, Darrin said at the moment I have lots of texture but I don't have momentum Darrin suggested that I should push toward anything and just feels like things are happening. What I should do next is to do something more rhythmic to try and drive it along with the video, such as a base sequence generator, I got all of the right kinds of textural sounds but need to use some more rhythmic to drive through along with the visual. Whereas Shaun suggested that simple is more, I will combine the suggestions of both of them to make changes.
In the process of making the sound, I used Ambient music to run through the entire video. I used a series of harsh environmental sounds such as cycle chi and mallets in the instrument rack, ambient & evolving to make the sound. Eerie and creepy. After making the ambient sound in Ableton, I added my Foley sound in Audition, and used it in special places in the video to highlight the effects of the video, such as footsteps come from nowhere, crippling laughter, etc. The sound effect can play a very good terrifying effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
After watching this video, It has given me some sound ideas, Usually what makes people feel terrifying is their own imagination, I can add harsh screams, horror cliche mimics are one of our most primal warnings. The theory is that it scares us because it makes us think a member of our tribe is under attack, even though we are actually sitting in the cinema or at home, This is supported by the fact that sudden shifts much more stress us, For that circumstance I will pay more attention to it, to add more texture to the sound. Also to make intense rhythm. Dissonance rhythm plays a considerable role: unexpected and unresolved tension make the audience already primed for fear when the jump scare comes. The goal is to make spooky chords and to warn the audience there is something is coming but they don't know when and what is coming, The sound makes people feel scary one of the reasons could be sometimes is loud and sometimes is barely even there, but when the audience start to listen carefully and pay attention to the sound the sudden loud sound can give the audience heart racing and feel creepy.
Last week we also sent the complete project1-exhilarating video to Shaun and Darrin, but the video always needs to be adjusted. This week we are always adjusting these two projects. According to the previously drawn timeline, we have completed two projects as planned, but currently only need to make some adjustments and minor changes to make audiovisual more prominent and complete.

Week 10 Reflection
Caiqin-Guo s3781225
During this week, I continued to improve my project1, and at the same time, I was working on my second project. In project 1, I added the string part to the end. The purpose is to make the string part as a handbrake on the emotion Because if the sound is always in a state of excitement, the audience will feel tired. Combining the string with the drum sound will not sound so monotonous.
My team member Monika is also working on her video. So far we are doing our own parts. I used Ableton to create horror and spooky background music. I recorded the harsh sound of our washing machine under working conditions. , I recorded some sounds that may be used, such as rapid footsteps, knocking on the door, the sound of bells, metal rubbing, water droplets, falling heavy objects, close the door heavily, etc. also be using sound effects such as screaming sounds I also considered the change of rhythm. Mainly to make a disturbing sound, shivering and terrifying. Through last week’s research and the horror movie I’ve watched, I used Ableton to make terrifying background music that runs through the entire video, creating an atmosphere of darkness at night. The scene may be outdoors, in the forest, and it’s very heavy. The sound of wind blowing, a little harsh background music. Make the audience feel gloomy and scared.
After watching this short film spooky science, Vlad the vampire was very afraid of all the strange noises that caused him to sleep well at night, but he himself is a vampire, he should make people feel scared, but with the help of his friends After he overcame his fear, his friends taught him how to use props to make sounds, and they did interesting experiments. So in my project, I will consider using some Foley sounds, but my purpose is to make people feel scared and creepy. Rather than having a comedic effect like in a short film.
This week I’m still doing some research on realistic sound. I found that the horror in a movie or game depends on the audience’s perception of tension-usually through sound accompanied by screen drama-guiding the audience's emotional experience throughout. Scene or game sequence For example, in the Schimmack and Grob models, fear can For example in the Schimmack and Grob model fear be considered high energy, high tension, and low valence emotion; while excitement high energy, low tension, and high valence emotion.
Tumblr media
Emotions considered high-energy, high-tension, and low-priced; And excitement has high energy, low tension, and high price emotions. The emotion of horror sounds across three affective dimensions: tension, arousal, and valence.
This is the spooky background music I have made so far because I haven't seen the visual aspect yet, I can only make the rough background sound first, and then add the details and the Foley sound I recorded. Next week's plan is to continue to improve on this. Next week’s plan is to see some videos of the team members before Tuesday, and then we will consult with Shaun and Darrin on Tuesday and seek some feedback.

Week 9 Reflection
Caiqin Guo- s3781225
This week I completed the milestone progress presentation, in which I discussed my progress and the processing and production of audio. According to the development of the timeline, we will start producing project2 on terrifying this week, but we will continue to improve project 1, I will be also spending more time on synthesis.
According to the feedback I received last Tuesday, I took Darrin’s suggestion. I extended the second audio to make it sound more complete, but I always keep the strings. I have can be used in a certain part of the video because it also has an exhilarating effect, but I will consider where it is most suitable. For now, we are working on now is to strengthen the audiovisual relationships.
I developed more into the second section and improved the third part. I think it matches well with the previous audio. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mkHDvPkWnbgweWW3XpwsqSeNboc_NtEY/view?usp=sharing
Tumblr media
The following is my research on terrifying
Definition: Terrifying causing extreme fear, If something is terrifying, it makes you very frightened.
“Scary songs use key, tempo and timbre to create tension and manipulate the way the listener interacts with sound,” according to a news release. Non-linear sounds are generally scratchy, disorganized, and chaotic, like the sound of vocal cords vibrating violently during a blood-curdling scream
youtube
This piece of music gives people a very uncomfortable feeling. Its volume and distortion are incredibly extreme. The famous "death metal growl" music is very harsh, making the audience disoriented and uncomfortable. It uses heavy and distorted tones, and in much terrifying music, they have inconsistencies between the melody and the instrumental parts. Some used creepy tonal combinations. In this audio, the roaring, hoarse voice is scary. It is aggressive and threatening. Of course, many audios are designed to make people feel scared. Creepy will also create a sense of suspense and fear for the audience. The choice of instruments gives a discordant quality. The sound quality of the instrument determines the mood of this music. The low-fidelity aesthetics and weird vocals convey an uneasy experience to the audience.
youtube
In the process of research, I also discovered that animal sounds can also cause people to fear. Animals typically show less habituation to biologically meaningful sounds than to novel signals We might therefore expect that acoustic deterrents should be based on natural sounds (reference 2) Especially at night when you hear these creepy animal sounds, you don't know what will appear in front of you, and psychological hints will make you feel scared. In many horror movies, the bat is usually very common, in addition to its terrible looks, and due to its very sharp sound, it creates a creepy effect. Experts say that nocturnal animals are often associated with death and darkness. "They engage in mysterious activities in the dark and so they have been cloaked in superstition since ancient times," Stanford University classics scholar Adrienne Mayor told National Geographic.
The potential instruments I will be using
youtube
When I was doing sound research I found that waterphone and theremin sound is the most common in horror movies but because I don't have either of these two instruments and I will be experimenting and creating some sounds effects myself using what's available around my house, I will be doing some foley sounds such as heavy footsteps, metal clanking high pitched ominous sounds, wood cracking sounds and etc aim to make sounds that are disturbing. also have Spooky background music. The apprehension engine definitely evokes an emotion, I will be also using some of the animal's sounds to add more texture.
I remembered an example in the class about a coffee break. It was a car driving normally. Suddenly a monster appeared in front of you when the camera changed. That was unexpected by the audience before I knew the monster was going to come out. , I thought it was a car advertisement, I think this video is very inspiring to me, everything is unexpected, you don't know what will happen next second. The background music is also from unremarkable at first to the sudden increase in volume when the monster comes out from behind. I think that is very heightened. People are often fearful of the unknown.
One more example I have watched parts of the movie before is the famous Horra movie called "lights out" directed by David F. Sandberg There are a lot of jump scares, which are very unexpected by the audiences. This movie also inspires me, This horror movie taps into a primal fear instinct in your brain, the feeling of tension, shocking and excitement. Those scary, heart-pounding screams or any sound effects in the horror movie has the same effect on us as animal distress calls: they evoke strong feelings and we find them disturbing, In the movie "light out", sudden drum, and the running footsteps from nowhere makes people feel scared, curious and uncomfortable.
plan for next week
This week I will continue to make terrifying sounds based on the timeline, experiment with different tools to create sounds, and improve project 1 to enhance the connection between vision and audio.

Week 8 Reflection
Caiqin Guo-s3781225
This week in class I have watched all the presentations from other students, I have been seeing lots of great works and it was impressive. This week Monica and I have been working on project 1, To bring a more intuitive expression to the audience, instead of letting the audience watch a narrative story. In this regard, Monica has improved the way the video is presented, retaining the valuable lens, and adding a lot of special effects to the video. In terms of audio, I also made changes. I deleted the previous transitional sound because we plan to make a one-minute video, so the audio aspect is also directly into a state of excitement.
As planned we both sent our second draft to both Darrin and Shaun, Unfortunately, our video and audio still didn't quite achieve the effect of exhilarating. We will continue to make changes to the satisfaction and will do more research. In terms of sound, Shaun suggested that I can enhance the sound is to treat the sound like the video by adding effects, destroying parts of it, and do more editing and mixing, and adding more elements. After receiving Shaun’s suggestion, we restarted a draft and did more research on sound, which gave me a lot of inspiration. This time I will be still using drum sounds and use the violin to achieve excitement. The atmosphere, the direction of the sound will be a feeling of enthusiasm as if it gives people a kind of on the battlefield, which is exciting and inspiring.
Second draft
This music has inspired me. It is inspiring and gives people momentum. In the beginning, there are drum elements in traditional instruments. Drum elements can have an inspiring force. It appears in many film and television dramas. In exciting scenes, drumbeats always appear in time. I have used a Chinese drums kit in GarageBand, and it sounded unique. I will explore this further with my sound ideas.
youtube
This video, the music After a minute, this audio sounded very exciting, it sounded like you were going to fight on the battlefield, the whole rhythm was fast, Accompanied by visual stimulation it made people's adrenaline soar. feels like you are fighting for faith and you are about to win the game, which is a positive feeling.
For our second project, We are concerned that if both words are exhilarating we will have difficulty innovating new ideas, and we are afraid that the styles of the two videos will be similar, so both of us agree to change the word to terrifying, we will be doing research on this word while we're doing our first projects and will include research in the weekly blog. Next week I will start to progress some sound ideas and do relevant research on the word terrifying.

Week 7 Reflection
Caiqin Guo- s3781225
This week, Monica and I completed the first rough draft according to the timeline. We started the first project, but after completing the first draft, we quickly realized that this video had no exciting experiences, which didn't show Heightened Multisensory Experiences to the audiences. The whole video is more about telling a story. We showed Shaun and Darrin our first draft, but our feedback was similar to what we expected. Monica shared the feedback both Shaun and Darrin have given. Darrin again emphasized that exhilarating music should be higher arousal valence positive music. He thinks my second half of the music only achieved the effect of uplifting. Considering that it matches the video content, I created a music idea To fit with the video the music is gradual it doesn’t excite the listeners from the beginning. After receiving feedback, Monica and I immediately discussed how to improve our work. We considered Shaun's suggestion and paid more attention to experience in the visual aspect, not narrative. Darrin's suggestion to me is having a combination of positive emotion with a high level of drive, and overall I think the feedback is beneficial. I will continue to make improvements on the audio side of things. I will use faster Bpm or more intense rhythm to drive the audience feeling make them feel excited.
Darrin also suggested that I make five short, exhilarating pieces of music and let Monica choose the music idea of the style she wants in her video and explore the concept. That is an excellent suggestion because then I will have a deeper understanding of what kind of instruments I should use and have a bit more sense. We will stay connected with each other and discuss our ideas and fully understand what each other wants. Monica and I have been staying in touch with each other, hoping to combine video and audio well, and bring exhilarating feeling in both visual and audio experiences to the audience.
First of all, I used the Ableton live to beat the drums because it has digital instruments and musical instruments keyboard. Once I have created the sound I like, it is convenient to play on the Ableton live. Then I imported the audio to Adobe Audition to process the sound quality, and I wanted to use the multi-track editors in the audition. It allows me to mix multiple audio tracks to create layered soundtracks and elaborate musicals compositions. Some basic editing such as adding the fade in and fade out to make the sound smoother, different audio overlays, and I have also set the left and right channel to make them sound more like 3D surrounded you, which bring more different experiences to the listeners.
Tumblr media
Through this feedback, I will improve my audio, I will add more exciting elements, such as add drums, add a strong rhythm or add a violin to create an exhilarating atmosphere.
The research found that In West African cultures, says Levin, “the music is … spiritual” (personal communication, May 10, 2014). As Hartigan (1995) notes: “The drums themselves are sacred, signifying power and influence” (p. 9); “drumming, in this tradition, is spirit” (p. 10). traditionally, the drum represents the heartbeats. In African, the drum is used to celebrate all aspects of life. The drum is also used to inspire passion and excitement and even cause trances, a momentary loss of consciousness to the drummer or the listener, and the vibrant and rhythmic sounds stirring up emotions. In my case, I think drums can be used in music very well to give people an uplifting feeling. I believe that the sound of the drums is very similar, and only very professional and sensitive people can hear the difference between different drums.
I found a very good website while researching. It can teach me to distinguish each different drumbeat. It has the 10 most common drum beats and examples, which allows me to better distinguish their differences and Features. I am very interested in several of these beats, such as 16th note groove and Disco groove, and I will explore them in my own project. I think they have a strong sense of rhythm.
youtube
This violin performance by David Garrett -He's A Pirate live at Tempodrom. I think the performance is exciting. The music is positive valence, and the live atmosphere and lighting complement the performance. Perhaps I might use the instrument Violin. After 50 seconds, the Music speed up, fast rhythm brings excitement to the audience. There are many factors that can course exhilarating feelings. He walks around the scene, plays close-ups with the audience, interacts with the audience, has live lighting, and has a huge performance team. I think these are causes of the exhilaration.
I will continue working on the audio side of things, follow the timeline and make sure everything is on the right track. My goal for this week is to send a short demo to Darrin and seek feedback by the end of next week. Stay in contact with Monica to consult ideas; also to during the week, I will send her five short music and let her pick the one she likes. I will also be working on the drumbeats to make the audio thick and improves the sound.

Week6 Reflection
Caiqin Guo-s3781225
This week I will be exploring my skills in music production. After I seek feedback from Darrin, He thinks using the capitol theatre was a great idea. Due to the lockdown, I will be utilizing technology to help me to complete my project. I will show a 360-degree perspective to show the Capitol in the video, and the user can move around with the mouse and participate. The lighting will change according to the rhythm of the music, which provides a multi-sensory experience to the audience.
From the 20 examples I found, I think there are many exciting factors. they are usually fast beats and BPM is usually around 120-130 for electronic music. I can refer to those examples when I do my own music. Some people believe that music brings people confidence and feels more powerful. Many athletes believe in the power of music. For example, some athletes, before they play they Usually wearing headphones. "Rituals exist in all sports," says Derek Rucker, a professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management. "And athletes often walk out of the lounge amidst the majestic music, as if the music is the upcoming game. Put on mental armor for the athletes. Usually, they are excited by the deafening music before they go on the field, which can set off the atmosphere of the athletes. Sometimes it Is conceptual, such as the classical cello, which can influence the audience's mood. If the cello is low, a Euphemistic melody can often bring out deep loss and sadness, and once played quickly, it will produce an uplifting effect immediately.
youtube
We Will Rock You is a jukebox musical based on the songs of the British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. In 2009, "We Will Rock You" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This song gives excitement and uplifting feelings, which inspires courage, mainly because of its brainwashing rhythm. This song primarily uses stomping and clapping as rhythmic body percussion beats. I think this can also be traditional Musical instrument drums instead. I intend to use drums, cello, guitar, and other musical instruments in my music. I’m going to use these techniques to make audiences feel exhilarating.
The research found "drumming releases endorphins, enkephalins and Alpha waves in the brain, which are associated with general feelings of well-being and euphoria" by Dr. Christiane Northrup. Playing drums can make you smarter. The drumming sound generates new neuronal connections in all parts of the brain. The more connections that can be made in the back of the brain, the more integrated the experience will be. For these reasons, therapeutic drumming may be a powerful tool in helping retrain the brains of people who have some level of damage, such as Attention Deficit Disorder, after a stroke or neurological disease such as Parkinson's.
youtube
This video is a live performance I found when I was doing research. I found that the lighting also played a big role. The lighting flickered with the rhythm. Stage lighting plays icing on the cake in stage performance art and scene modeling. Let the audience You can also enjoy it visually. With the progress of the performance, the atmosphere of the stage is constantly changing and showing. The intensity, color, distribution of the lighting area, and the movement of the light in the performance have great plasticity and controllability. I will be looking at the different color effects that could bring to the audience. Stage lighting can also be used to make the audience feel the emotions in the play, for example red is Intensity, passion, love in stage lighting, orange stands for Warmth, excitement, creativity in lighting it can be also used to highlight where you want the audience to pay attention. As the colors have their own meaning, and they are quite different from what we see in everyday life, So I need to carefully choose the right color lighting to ensure I express the right feeling, and what I want the audiences to feel, and how to make them engage. Through the research, I have a more in-depth study of lighting. I will use colors to set the scene and mood for the audience effectively. I am more inclined to Complementary, which uses two contrasting colors to create a strong emotional mix. Just like blue and purple, they are often used to imply different emotions and increase saturation. I will consider the combination of colors, including their meaning.
This week I helped my team members complete footage, I cooperated with her to complete a scene, and I also appeared in her video. I have also started my music production. Next week I will continue to follow my timeline. I will continue to communicate with the team members, give and receive feedback, and produce my music.

Week 5 Reflection
Caiqin Guo-S3781225
This week I completed the AT2 presentation and received many valuable feedbacks from Darrin. Although my first example may not be accurate, everyone may have a different understanding of the word exhilarating, so the music I found did not make everyone feel exhilarating. But through this presentation, I have made it clearer what kind of music I want to create. It is important to stand in the majority's perspective. I intend to make higher arousal valence positive music. Consider that the black box can't be used due to the lockdown, I will use a synthesizer to make the sound, using software such as Ableton live, pro tool, and garage band to make the music. The first project with my partner will focus on screen-based screen-based audiovisual artwork. She will film her video and include a little bit of animation, and I will create the music for the video.

Studies have found that when humans receive their favorite music, their brains will feel very good. When they hear exhilarating music, their brains will become excited The average participant’s heart rate rose by 21bpm from their resting heart rate while listening to punk, all the way to 86bpm. "when the notes get higher and higher, perhaps prompting a similar surge of energy that we feel from the driving beat throughout the track".(Marianne Rizkallah the head music therapist from North London Music Therapy). Research has also shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain chill-associated increases in autonomic arousal regardless of the valence of the sound. amygdala responses were observed only with chills elicited by unpleasant sounds. Additionally, memories associated with familiar music might also have an effect on the emotional experience [14]. The recall of memories (Brain imaging of chill reactions to pleasant and unpleasant sounds). (i.e., subjective, psychophysiological, and facial expressive) in response to auditory stimuli (i.e., standardized vs. personally relevant; pleasant vs. unpleasant sounds). The BBC's study and regulation of dance music centered around two goals: pleasing important groups in national service and broadcasting morale-boosting music. Dancing is the most stress-free thing for them. Darrin suggests the mix cube from immersion and it provides a 3D audio mixing platform. I will try to create my project on this platform it looks very professional, This allows me to create my project add the audio sources, position, edit, and render them.

I will use a combination of musical instruments to make music sound richer, more harmonious, and more lively music. I will use a synthesizer to create the music and of course, I will also record some sounds for dubbing as my partner's video contains other sounds such as the sound of falling water, the sound of trains, and the sound of people chatting on the street. I will record that by using a recorder. British composer Sheridan Tongue recommends an audio-specific digital recorder over any other handheld device that records sound. It is very important to use professional recording equipment, which can record distant sounds clearly, and the sound quality will be clearer and accurate. Also, professional recording equipment will be more reliable. From the 20 exhilarating music examples I sent to Darrin, I found that they all have a common feature. When I hear them, it will make my body sway with the music and nod my head. I will want to dance to the music. In my project, I will use electronic dance music. I think it brings an exhilarating experience to people in many ways. You can feel EDMC as a new ‘spirituality of life’ both auditorily and visually. Also, explore the creative effect of the audiovisual three-dimensional stage because only a good level of music and color can better guarantee the lighting and sound stage effect, The choice of lighting color is also very important. Most likely I will use brighter colors to eye-catching the audience present a good sensory experience.
I will follow my timeline to keep everything on time. This week, the team members and I consolidated our ideas and the theme of the video, and we discussed our plans for cooperation. Including when to shoot the video and when to start making music, we will give the venue to discuss and give feedback to each other.

Week4 Reflection
Caiqin Guo-s3781225
This week I listened to all the presentations, and I got valuable feedback from last week’s weekly blogs; and in this week’s blog, I will do more academic research.
In the original plan, I will use black box to make sound, because the sound is very three-dimensional with good quality of sound. But if the lockdown continues due to the epidemic, my plan B will use Ableton Live to make electronic music to explore my idea. In the first project, I will work with my team members to complete a video. The video includes the sound of falling into the water, breathing, the noise of buses and subways, and so on.
In sound processing, I will use Ableton live for editing and production. Research finds that music often gives people a different listening experience, and sometimes it depends on your emotion too,Although noise is the stressor of the brain, the music we like enhances our emotions and puts the brain in a more relaxed state so that we can have a deeper insight into new ideas and remain open to new things. Music connects us at a deeper level with each other, which is why we love going to concerts, dance parties, and singing together. We collectively synchronize our beating hearts and brain waves, and it is excellent for enhancing collaboration and relatedness. When we listen to music, many areas of the brain are activated, including areas related to exercise, planned attention, and memory. It also changes the chemical reaction of our brain and stimulates the release of dopamine when we listen to favorite music. Music also helps those afflicted by stuttering, as brilliantly portrayed in the film “The King’s speech.”
youtube
The study found that most people can focus and concentrate when listening to music while working or studying. It can help to alleviate anxiety.
This Festschrift honors the career of Charles P. Schmidt on the occasion of his retirement from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His main research is the social psychology of music education, including the motivation of music learning, the behavior of music teaching, and the personality and cognitive style in music teaching. Few researchers in the field of music education have been able to integrate their teaching, and creative activity in so seamless a manner as Charles P. Schmidt has done for over 25 years. It's essential for people because, as Dr. Schmidt asserted, music information processing and performance are "the expression of personality, motivation, cognitive style, and other emotional variables." As such, examinations of these constructs are also critical elements for inclusion in graduate curricula in music education. When you watch a horror movie, what makes you scared may be the picture, but what is scarier is its sound effects. When you watch a shark documentary, the sharks are not scary. What makes you scared is The thrilling beat to imitate your heartbeat makes you feel anxious and scared. This is why sound and music are extremely important
Beauty has received sparse attention from emotion theorists, some of whom have argued that aesthetic pleasure is cognitive and too "disinterested" to be emotional. (Review of general psychology, 2008-12, Vol.12 (4), p.305-329). From the Internet, I found that these 21 young musicians come from different countries. They all have different views on music and their respective music styles in different fields. But one thing in common, they are all making trendy music, like hip-hop, rap, these younger music styles, which are loved by young people and think these music are exhilarating. From the music library I found some inspiration, and have more sense of how to make music that makes people exhilarate.
Although exhilarating usually expresses excitement, it is usually accompanied by thrills, one example I found I the horror movie lights out' directed by David F. Sandberg, this movie highlights the coexistence of exciting and thrilling, Horror movies tap into a primal fear instinct in your brain, the feeling of tension, shock and exhilarate cause the release of the hormones in the body such as norepinephrine, cortisol, and adrenaline from the autonomic nervous system. These factors trigger the psycho-physiological of the audience characteristics. According to Blumstein, those scary, heart-pounding screams or any sound effects in the scary movie has the same effect on us as animal distress calls: they evoke strong feelings, and we find them disturbing. In the movie light out, sudden drum, And running footsteps from nowhere make people feel scared, curious, and exhilarating.

Week3 reflection
Caiqin Guo-s3781225
This week I did my AT1 personal presentation on Tuesday. Darrin and Shaun inspired me and gave me useful feedback, but he hoped that my presentation could be more in-depth. I talked about three different types of art exhibitions: artwork, architecture, and a music video to show the different types of art performances. Because of my wide range, Shaun suggested that I can think about how to integrate these elements harmoniously, and he said that he is looking forward to seeing my final work. Through this presentation, I have a deeper understanding of my final work and thought about the next plan.
We visited the capitol theatre, black box, and lighting system in 9.1.36 on Thursday. We first went to the capital theatre. When the lights were on display, I was amazed and shocked. The whole visual effects plus the sound effects made people immersive. The blue and red lights gave a 3D visual effect, which made me very impressed, Its atmosphere makes people feel very comfortable and will not feel bored not only does your gaze follow the change of light, but you can also see other changes in the light in your peripheral light. The beating of the light, the change of light color, and the matching of sound effects. Through this show, I have a deeper understanding of color matching and sound effects.
Later, we went to building12 and experience the sensory experience brought to us by the black box. The black box gave me a very strong visual impact. The light is very shining, and the light will change differently with the fluctuation of the sound. the sound is 360 surround, which brings a very good listening experience. Through this experience, I decided to use Black box for my project. It is very attractive to me because I focus on making sounds. so, I think Black box can show the sound effect very well and bring a good sound experience to people.
I did some research on black box and capitol theatre and on how to use the equipment and how to present my word ‘exhilarating using the equipment. Black box is a powerful technique to check the application under test from the user’s perspective. Is used to test the system against external factors responsible for software failure, The testing focuses on the input that goes into the software, It doesn't cover the inside details such as code, server logic, and developments. There are 3 types of testing which are Functional testing, non-functional testing, and regression testing. It configured and installed a 24.2-channel audio system for the development and playback of immersive environments and installation work, Commissioned for Dr. Adam Nash of the School of Design, it has user-friendly operating modes varying from stereo playback from a Bluetooth device, 5.1 playbacks, to a discrete 24.2 channel mode. It can be used in the creation of immersive sonic fields for combining with virtual, and mixed reality environments; combination with 3D projection; electroacoustic and acoustic research; and the development of audio installations.
Both black box and Capitol Theatre are a space in which the stage and allows audiences to experiences the shocking effects on both visual and auditory. I and my partner discussed the next plan and decided to download the software first and learn how to use it. perhaps we can experience it next time. Overall it was a meaningful experience and a great lesson on the equipment.

Week 1 Reflection
Caiqin Guo- S3781225
During the week of learning, Mainly explain the course content and assessment requirements we have briefly talked about the meaning of Heightened Multisensory experiences and what each word means, and the breakdown of the words, so we get a better understanding of what each word stand for and the deep meaning. Through a more detailed explanation, my initial understanding of this course is to use the senses to activate the passion of the audience. Multisensory is not only Relating to or involving several physiological senses. but also Hearing sight, smell, touch, taste, equilibrium. Through these present a perfect stage effect and bring the emotions of the audience into the performance. Then we chose one adjective word, I chose exhilarating, and I discussed and researched this objective word to expand my field of knowledge. Exhilarating means to make others feel happy, animated, or elated, to express exciting emotion. Examples are birthday parties, weddings, Disney, music festivals ,and concerts. Things that make the audience feel the excitement from the senses, visuals, hearing, and the lighting effects. The atmosphere of the scene easily drives the audience’s emotions.

At the end of the lesson, I have a deeper understanding of this course, including the learning objectives. I have a deeper understanding of the term exhilarating. and Relating to or involving several physiological senses, I learned some basic sound effects in the last semester, including how to use sound to drive emotions. This semester I will explore my existing skills and learn more skills to expose the audience to different sensory experiences. In the extracurricular time, I will explore and understand the content more deeply. Lay a good foundation for assessment 1 and set goals.
