‘Hidden’

Final : ‘Hidden’ (2021)

 Materials: Branches, wire, wax and fabric.

I made this dream catcher to reflected our subconscious mind,the main center is made of branches bound together with wire reflecting the center of our minds cube like and imperfect. hanging off of them are small boxes which are there to reflected the feelings,trauma,fears that are subconsciously hidden in boxes at the back of our mind shown through the black fabric which kinda creates and abyss inside through boxes, representing what we are trying to hide that is why I chose the title hidden cause there is all sorts of things we try hide away in out subconscious though these boxes. the wire holding them together was there to show a sense of lack gravity as we are no longer in reality, as I tried to have the ones on the left hand side hang vertical somewhat, it also creates a barbed wire like look as I twisted them around, it could show how we are shacked and held down by these boxes in our mind.

I decide to incorporate both types of fabric as the black fabric was thicker than the white, so by combining it to help hold Its shape and most importantly it has significance to my theme as I decided to only put the black in the inside, to show the hidden feeling hidden in our subconscious that we are not aware off but unconsciously rubbing off on us in life with out us realizing it, these feeling hidden in boxes in that back of our mind. 

While making these I had a failed attempted at first as I spread out the fabric too much making the wax seep to bottom. I’d decided to use wax because the pva from my previous Marquette took to long to dry and for this I was quite behind so I needed to save time.so for the next attempted a compacted the fabric more in the tray and with the some of the other ones I managed to scrape some of the wax of. The only other downside to the wax was that it made the fabric gray in some areas which I was not too fond of.

Binding

I completed binding the branches together most of them creating square like shapes, but I left a few unattached to show a sense of lack of gravity as its flouting through the center signifying that we are not in reality but in fact in an unconscious mind, it could also show how incomplete this person is as nothing is completely right as its somewhat broken in areas and the wire binding is quite rough could maybe suggest this person is struggling with trauma in there mind but it hidden away hinted though this brokenness.

Temporally putting it together with string just to see if each branch works together then I will bind them with wire as it much sturdier, I might need to cut a few of the branches to make it some what symmetrical, although I don't want it to be perfect fitting as I want to show a sense of imperfection with the diffrent sizes of each branches as the main centre of this structure based on my building like shapes will represent the hub of our minds as our minds are imperfect I want to make it eco this without it looking scrappy, when I add the wire i hope it will add a sense of structure to it holding it together strongly, which will expand into wire..

I was experimenting with binding the twigs together with wire and it was much tighter that string and it worked really well.I was testing out the two different wires I had, I would prefer to use the top one but unfortunately I don’t have much of it left, with the grey one which is a bit thinner and less shinny but it will do the job.

Planning final

looking back at my dream catcher/wind beem things from before I realized I wanted to create a less traditional catcher as i wanted to incorporate more of my theme into what I was making. At the bottom of the page i stated sketching out futuristic like composition ideas, I decided I wanted to use wire instead of string as i can make it stand up defining Gravity like altering perceptions and I would like to attach my mini cube multiples on from that which attaches to the central hub our mind which will be made up of panels of branches, i want to make it some what wonky imperfection reflecting our unconscious mind,dream like.THE THUMBNAIL on the top left hand side is what I Planning my final piece to look like.

Cubism

what is it?  “Cubism is an early-20th-century avant-garde art movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture, and inspired related movements...”  “...use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collage.”

cubism was there to show the multiple viewpoints and perspectives to something- shown through cube like shapes and geometry. you've probable heard of Picasso, one of the most recognizable names from the movement. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque where the pioneers of the cubist movement.

Ideas

looking at entering the mind/dream in not a literal way maybe through sounds as triggers. WIND THING BEEM? DREAM CATCHER? I think a dream catcher like structure is perfected to in capitulate my theme as dream catchers are traditionally used to protected us when we sleep, unconscious from bad dreams and night mares.I started to experiment with different compositions although I Might re-imagine it in a more creative was but this was good in exploring different Ideas.

Fabric Marquette

I made a series of cubes out of fabric continuing with using square like shapes, I used an ice cube tray to achieve this and making sure each one is of similar sizes to each other making them multiples. I was also testing out different fabrics from red, white and black. I hung each one up with thread which worked out well. The black denim fabric was the best to retain its shape,the red ones wasn't good as it was too thin. I think the white ones showed up nicely held nicely.

Cardboard Marquette's

I made this cardboard Marquette to replicate the shapes found from my buildings that I used to represent the subconscious mind.I hot clue each of these panels and documented them from different angles i especially like the final angle as it shown a sense of imperfection with unusal gap just like our minds and it remind me back to my maze concepted also as these wall f the building could be like walls of a maze of our mind with random gaps and walls making me want to continue experimenting with cube like shapes as it also likes back to my theme.

Recurring dreams

Dreams that repeat more than once - frequently? could be a way you brain is trying to tell you something- unresolved issues. 

Some common recurring dreams:

-Being chased-showing an issue you may be avoiding- anxiety,fear.

-Being surrounded by bugs-spiders        

 -Pulling out teeth-teeth falling out- associated with ageing. and insecurity about your appearance.  

-some others are: flying,plane crash,past exams, being late. Most of these dreams include some sort of threat.
