The Modern Butsudan of the 20th Century

What is a Modern Butsudan?
And why has a modern Butsudan not taken foothold? In Nichiren Daishonin’s time we all know that transportation was conducted by horse and wooden ships. Virtually everything was made from wood except for weaponry, farm tools, and other blacksmithed items. Furthermore, as we can see today with Butsudans all over, these Butsudans are still made from wood. In my experience when I show the first metal Butsudan that I made, people seem to doubt metal Butsudans. They are attached to the idea of a traditional Butsudan concept. It strikes me as odd that people cannot see a modern Butsudan concept made from metal, or perhaps they refuse to see it? We drive cars made from steel to go to work. All modern navys have destroyers, cruisers, and air craft carriers made from steel. Modern military jets and passenger aircraft are made from steel and titanium. Bank vaults are made from high grade very thick steel. Modern construction of skyscrapers, apartment complexes, government buildings, etc. are made from concrete with steel as the inner skeleton to support the concrete around the structure. See the pattern here? Although we see modern advances in military and civilian technology, with massive amounts of metal being used for producing this modern technology, why has this not been carried out for our personal Butsudan setups?
Protection of the Dai-Gohonzon

Do you remember the last time you went to Gokaihi? Why would the Dai-Gohonzon have double blast doors? Why is the Hoando made of metal? If the High Priest ordered such a building to be built, it is obvious that this was to protect the Dai-Gohonzon from any situation or contingency. The Butsudan setup for the Dai-Gohonzon is obviously a modern Butsudan setup. When I started chanting and joined Nichiren Shoshu senior members often told me, “Emulate the High Priest and how the Dai Gohonzon and Butsudan is handled in the Hoando as much as possible.” Taking care of our individual Butsudans it is common practice to treat our Butsudans as the priests care for the Dai Gohonzon and Butsudan. We consistently strive to be like the High Priests and other senior priests. Having said that, the Dai Gohonzon is protected by metal. Why are there no Butsudans that are metal and truly protect our individual Gohonzons? In the true spirit of emulation, should we not see more metal Butsudans that add the uttermost protection? Why no modern Butsudans?
The Japanese Obsession with Wooden Housing, No Lessons Learned from Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

In Japan, besides modern apartment buildings and commercial buildings, the average family household is still made from wood. I find this quite surprising with Japan’s WWII experience. The American generals in charge of massive carpet bombing of Japan’s major cities, and the generals in charge of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they knew Japan’s greatest weakness was the national obsession with wood and paper houses. Burning it all down was easy. This is most evident with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The bomb was purposely dropped above the ground to create massive fires of the wooden housing below. Due to paper and wood being all over the city, it made Little Boy’s (code name at the time for the first atomic bomb) devastation that much worse. I wonder if people in Hiroshima still build their houses out of wood and paper? I wonder how many Gohonzons disappeared in that disaster. How many more Gohonzons would have survived with a modern Butsudan made of metal? The Genbaku Dome (Atomic Dome)

In Hiroshima, there was essentially one structure that survived near ground zero: The Genbaku Dome. The construction of the Genbaku Dome was basically the only building in the city that was constructed in a modern fashion: steel beam internals, concrete outside, bronze dome on the top. If the Genbaku Dome had not been constructed of these modern, strong materials, the Genbaku Dome would not exist as we see it today. As for the dome itself, it was constructed of bronze, one of the weaker metals, and it still survived! Bronze has a lower melting point than steel. Bronze can be soldered with a low temperature torch, steel cannot. Steel must be welded at a much higher temperature with a more sophisticated setup. What is the main metal that Sumeru uses to make modern Butsudans?: STEEL! How many wooden Butsudans survived Little Boy? :0? Click to Post

On my 2013 tozan to Taisekiji we found one tree which bloomed flowers in November! Meido grand opening initial ceremony was just the previous week after taking the video, and the sakura were discovered weeks prior. When Nichiren passed the cherry blossoms bloomed out of season.

Butsugu supplies made by hand | Custom Butsugu shop

Butsugu supplies | Sumeru stock & custom
Most Butsugu supplies these days are not made by hand or custom. They are plastic or metal and are mass produced, which is fine as through mass producing we have lower pricing. However not everyone is into the "cookie cutter" products out there. Some people are into individuality and customizing the products they use in their lives. If you have a metal butsudan through us you may opt to have a matching metal butsugu set as well.

Sumeru offers various butsugu supplies and sets as you can find in our store. Note we can change the sizes, the finish, or even create something you need special just for your altar. We can make items out of steel, aluminum or stainless steel. " order_by="sortorder" order_direction="ASC" returns="included" maximum_entity_count="500"] Contact Sumeru Butsudan to get a quote on what you want made to fit your individuality
