GOD, HE WAS SUCH A FUCKING IDIOT.

JJ kicked a lonesome rock from his path, the setting sun warming his back. He was nearly overheating from the mixture of the sun and the embarrassment of Kie turning him down less than fifteen minutes ago. He wanted to dig a hole down at the beach, crawl inside, and never come out again - he doesn’t think he’d ever been so embarrassed in his life. Kie was going to visit some family friends in Maine for a week and she was leaving tonight - JJ saw it as an opportunity to tell her he liked her more than a friend. But things didn’t go the way he wanted them to. He shouldn’t have been surprised. Because they never do.

JJ felt heat rush to his cheeks, his whole face going red.

“….you know? No pogue on pogue macking?”

JJ’s eyes had fallen from Kie’s a long time ago, he was too embarrassed to keep eye contact, so he settled for staring at his shoes. He nodded even though he had stopped listening the second he heard her sympathetic tone speak out his name. Kie reached out and touched his arm,

“I’m sorry, JJ, really.”

JJ shook his head, glancing up at her, locking eyes for a short moment before he looked away again,

“No, no, it’s fine,” he said, taking a step towards the door, “it was stupid, just forget I said anything.”
