The Importance of Note-Taking in Research - Sumnotes
Note-taking in research is not just a process of jotting down points that seem important to you at the time. Instead, when used properly, note-taking is a process that helps you more deeply engage with, absorb, and understand the material.
Good notetaking promotes new connections between ideas and a broader understanding of unfamiliar concepts. In this way, note-taking can facilitate greater efficiency in decision-making and issue resolution.
Technology has made note-taking much more versatile and accessible than in the days when all we had were notebooks and pens.
Laptops and tablets have led to the now ubiquitous Portable Document Format (PDF) becoming an indispensable resource for highlighting important points and recording thoughts and ideas during research. The PDF also improves collaboration capabilities between peers due to its easily shareable nature.
As you are about to discover, learning how to add notes to a PDF delivers one of the most efficient and convenient methods for improving your research and enhancing your learning experience.
Why Note-Taking is a Critical Part of Research
Many people don't associate spontaneous ideas and ah-ha moments with regular, run-of-the-mill research, but they are mistaken. Students and academics from all fields often find their research can inspire creative thinking and form insightful connections that can take them off in new directions they may not have thought of otherwise.
Ideas can indeed burst into our consciousness during a stroll through the park, relaxing in the tub, or while eating lunch. But just as many, if not more, can be the result of a spark that burns brighter because of effective note-taking skills.
We no longer rely on large, heavy textbooks. Instead, we can carry a full catalog of research material on our laptops and mobile phones. With the right tools, researchers can add notes to a PDF document, and just as easily share them with other devices.
How to Add Notes to a PDF
A simple tool is all you need to add notes to PDF files, which gives you the ability to collate, organize, and review notes using a flexible system that you control. Here are just a few of the ways you can add notes to a pdf document and improve your research efficiency.
How Do I Add Notes to PDF Document?
PDF annotation is an excellent method for engaging with your research at a deeper level. Annotating a PDF document works best during the second read-through because the first gives your brain time to assimilate the information.
You can make annotation more efficient by organizing your highlights with different colors. For example, you could use one color for text that helps you follow the author's thought processes, and a different color for notes you need to consider further or follow up on with a colleague.
Another research skill you can use to add notes to a PDF document is paraphrasing. This is a well-documented technique where you express the meaning behind the author's text in your own words. The method can help you understand the meaning and intent of the author in a way that's more natural for your brain to recall later.
Paraphrasing is also an excellent way to add notes to a PDF to summarize a chapter down to its key points. You can quickly add notes to PDF files through paraphrasing by using custom-made notes, which you can further customize with different colors according to your needs.
When you add notes to PDF online documents, you can now share and synchronize those notes with all your devices. You can quickly check your notes through your phone or Kindle reader without needing to get your laptop out.
Note-taking is a critical part of the research process that is made a lot more convenient when adding notes to PDF files. Discover even more ways to use notetaking as a research tool when you use Sumnotes, one of the best PDF note-taking tools available online.

Approaches to text annotation in PDF - Sumnotes
Reading is an essential part of college and university courses, but it can be difficult to remember all the information you read. Marking up your texts with notes and highlights will help make sure that key points stand out as well as provide helpful study aids for future readings. Filing away entire books in one sitting might feel like overkill at times - no matter how many pages there are.
There are many ways to engage with what you're reading, and one way is through annotations. By highlighting key phrases or making notes about particular ideas in your text as well as asking questions that lead toward more insight for the paper's topic then writing can become an active process rather than just background work on assignments.
A well-annotated text will help you better understand the author's argument by identifying key information, tracing their thought process, and introducing some of your own thoughts. Before making major annotations, it is recommended to read through a single time before making annotations. Doing so improves efficiency since readers become more familiar with what needs to be annotated.
There are several ways of text annotation in practice such as highlighting, paraphrasing, underlining, and commenting which are common ways of displaying text for emphasis. Let's dive into the methods and see how each of them works.
Highlighting: highlighting or underlining keywords and phrases is a common method of annotating written text. This method is an easy way to review materials, especially for exam preparation and research papers. Highlights are also useful when you want to emphasize specific parts within your text that can be cited in other places due to their relevance with what you are discussing or working on.
But what is the trouble with highlighting text? The trouble with highlighting is that it's easy to do a lot at once. You can highlight too much, and then when you come back later your notes may not have any point or context in them because they were just scattered around by chance while reading through everything else on the page. This would definitely mess up things and create an obstacle. We can easily say that worse than doing nothing is "over-highlighting".
The best way to keep track of what you read is by highlighting the important parts. Make your own notes on each section, or highlight phrases and words that come up again in other annotations for easy reference later.
Paraphrasing: in order to be able to capture the meaning of important ideas, one must become adept at paraphrasing them. This technique will help you solidify your understanding and prepare for any writing that may rely on reading comprehension in this manner by allowing for notes about key points within texts or extracts from books; acting as a quick summary that can then be easily adapted into other materials. Paraphrasing summarises what you think the author meant in his own words.
Description: using a descriptive outline is very helpful for organizing your thoughts when annotating text. It allows you not only to see where the main ideas are but also provides other types of support such as explanations and details which will make it easier to get everything out on paper without losing any important information in between sentences.
The process of making a descriptive outline not only helps you follow the construction and organization behind your text but also identifies which parts work together well. It can be used as an effective tool for understanding how writers argue their points or think about problems when they're writing expository texts.
Commenting: Annotations can go beyond understanding the text's meaning by noting the reactions of the reader. This is an excellent way to begin formulating your own ideas for writing assignments based on the topic. Comments respond with additional arguments or explanations when someone asks about something specific; it can also serve as note-taking throughout your readings if that helps convey information more efficiently during class time.
These are the main approaches you can use while reading a book, writing a research paper, preparing for an exam, or working on a legal case by going through thousands and thousands of reports.

The best 5 tips to make the highlighted text more visible
Highlighting text in a pdf document is important because it makes the information easier to read. Highlighted passages stand out from their surroundings, making them eye-catching and memorable for readers who are looking at your work later on down the line. You can also use highlights as memory aids while studying - if you need just one passage or idea that's especially relevant during exam time then highlighting will help keep track of these key points so they're not forgotten when reviewing materials weeks before an examination!
Highlighting text can be an effective way to ensure that you understand and remember what is being read. So next time your studying, be sure to highlight key points in books or documents for future use!
We would like to provide techniques that you should use in each of the most common annotation scenarios, such as emphasizing one word or summarising an entire paragraph with just a few words. It is highly advised that you test it on different font sizes and borders/background colors before making any final decisions about how much emphasis is appropriate in your own specific case.
Here are the recommendations research provides as to how to make the highlights more visible by using techniques to make them stand out.
Tip 1: We recommend using borders or yellow backgrounds for the strongest pop-out effect, but other options may work depending on your specific needs! It is important that only one feature is highlighted.
Tip 2: Choose text highlighting techniques that do not interfere with each other and give a strong pop-out effect like using the bold font type on the yellow background, the border with the red font size, etc. It is important to note that both features should have the same visibility. The main point here is to make sure there are no issues when choosing how different elements interact by checking if they can work together harmoniously before implementing them into your design plan.
Tip 3: The main proposition behind this tip is that the conjunction of the two features is way more important than their single occurrence. Here is an example of implementing this tip: use a border and red color, font size with the red color, or font size and yellow background.
Tip 4: Using the yellow background with spacing is one of the most popular techniques for creating an attention-grabbing effect. It can be used in many ways, such as with fonts or colors to create emphasis on certain words and phrases within your content: spacing out important information by using larger lettering while leaving other parts sparsely populated, adding margins around topics that deserve more room due to their significance or employing underlines throughout a document.
Tip 5: The conjunction of the two features should be easy to see and detect. For example, using border colors with red fonts or bold text on a yellow background makes for an attention-grabbing design that is free from any unwanted clutter.
We hope that the tips provided above will help you better highlight your pdf documents. Check SUMNOTES and highlight your annotations with ease and fun.

The topic of today's post is consolidating your notes, highlights and annotations in one place.
If you are a student cramming for your exam or a researcher reading latest papers, chances are you're sifting through huge volumes of information and highlight (or make notes about) the most important bits for later use. Order of extracted highlights
As of a few days back we’ve rolled out new sorting algorithm along with a custom highlight ordering feature. I will explain both of them in the next paragraph, so stay tuned !
Default ordering of extracted highlights
After receiving quite a lot of feedback from our users (which is hard to appreciate enough !), we’ve decided to implement time based order of extracted highlights. What this means is that, basically, extracted highlights will be ordered based on when you highlighted the original text with older highlights going first and, respectively, newer highlights going last.
Custom ordering of extracted highlights
This is a completely new feature. Before, when you extracted your highlights, you could not shuffle them around and had to stick to whatever list you’re supplied with. However, this did not always work and our users wanted to shuffle highlights around before saving or sharing them with their peers. We’ve listened to the feedback and added a feature which allows to shuffle extracted highlights. To use this feature just drag a highlight in the list of extracted highlights and move it up or down. Custom ordering will be preserved when exporting the highlights into other formats or sending over email & even when importing into Evernote.
As always, reach out to us over [email protected] or via our Facebook page & Twitter
Happy extracting !
