my grandma spent what would be her last summer living in a wood paneled camper she’d parked at the mouth of a holler, an emerald ravine. the air smelled like spun sugar but the bees didn’t sting. otherworldly blankets of fog tucked me in at night, rain danced to a twinkling melody on the aluminum, and hummingbirds flitted past my open window at dawn as the morning glories awoke and stretched toward them. it felt like an endless and eternal terrarium then, but when january came and leeched the last of the green out of the hillside, it took her with it too. i’ve hated summer ever since.

I wonder what life could've been like if you had made it out of Little Rock.
The shame sets in as I get older. You'll be 20 years old forever.
In August, it'll be ten years without you. How? It's so unfair.
I wish I could've saved you.
