sorry if i have the wrong person, but was it you who once posted a link to a japanese learning textbook that focused more on understanding how the grammar works than starting with basic phrases? i believe it was written by a specific person whose name was in the title... if you know what i'm talking about i'd like a link please 🙇‍♀️ if you don't then have a nice day

What you're looking for from me isn't a textbook per se, but two online study guides. One of them is Tae Kim's guide to learning Japanese.

The Other is Organic Japanese with Cure Dolly.

Now, you might find that Cure Dolly is actually very critical (!!) of Tae Kim's guide. However, from my partner who is learning Japanese, she found that having both points of view about learning Japanese, and cross-referencing concepts where one of the two do not explain the concept to your satisfaction, was very helpful. Where Tae Kim falls short, Cure Dolly does very well, and where Cure Dolly might be a bit obtuse, Tae Kim covers very well.

For a literal textbook, if you feel that you need it, I still recommend Genki, especially the workbook. I hope this helps!
