Writing what you think other people want to read over what you want to write will slowly kill your creativity.
Write those self indulgent fics! Write those self-inserts. Write what you find joy in creatingânot what you think is an objectively âgoodâ story. If you have fun writing it, it is good. I promise thereâs someone out there who will enjoy reading your stories as much as you enjoy writing them.

Once more for the fanfic writers...
There is no wrong or right way of doing this fanfic-writing thing. Free yourself in 2025 by embracing whatever sort of writer you are.
If you can only post a story once a year or you want to post everyday, it's okay.
Whether you can only write drabbles or 100k stuff, it's okay.
Maybe your strength lies in writing fantasy, or romance or adventure, or non graphic smut, or omergaverse, or whatever kinky stuff there is out there, or comedy, or musical, medieval stuff, etc., it's okay.
Whether you're in a large or a tiny fandom, it's okay.
There is an audience for everything and everyone. It's not possible to dip one's toes in everything. Things can be learned and you can diversify if you really want to do more things with your writing. There is no gun to your head though. Even our favorite artists aren't good at everything.
It seems like recently there is so much pressure on fanfic writers to write certain stuff, in a certain way and for certain fandoms.
Let's not forget that from the get-go fanfic-writing is a FUN HOBBY and hence the secret is for you to write what you want to write, how you want to write it, when you want to write it and for whatever fandom you love.

Remember that every day is an opportunity to be a better fanfiction writer than you were yesterday. That being said...
...improvement isn't only in the big things like writing a 10k story in one sitting or responding positively to negative comments on your work. Progress is in the seemingly small but actually big things too;
You finally learned how to correctly spell that word you frequently use.
2. You found a different word you can use in place of the verb you've abused
3. You wrote a whole ass paragraph for your draft without feeling insecure about it because you're finally understanding that drafts are meant to be messy.
4. It's taking you months to complete the next chapter of your story. At first you felt bad about it every second of your day but now you actually haven't felt bad for a whole hour. Slowly you're understanding that art takes time and you deserve to be patient and kind with yourself.
5. You took the step to read/listen to a random post about how to write better. Maybe you haven't put that advice into practice yet but hey, you clicked on it and listened/read till the end
6. You managed to read one of your own posted stories, ill feelings about it or no
7. You now celebrate every vote/kudos/like you get on your story because you know that a real human being is behind it, loving your work, shoddy as you think it might be.
8. Today you woke up caring a little less about how your stories aren't that popular in the fandom. Finally you're learning to write for you and to just dwell on enjoying the writing process instead of focusing on how the world will receive your story when you post
9. You read comments on your story which suggest you take your story in a certain different direction, but you successfully ignore those suggestions and courageously stick to the story you want to tell.
10. You ended the day still resisting the urge to have AI write your story for you.
Congratulations to you, most improved writer, even if only one of the items on this list resonates with youđđđ¤
You're still growing and improving after all.

Some of my writerâs block cures:
Handwrite. (If you already are, write in a different coloured pen.)
Write outside or at a different location.
Read.
Look up some writing prompts.
Take a break. Do something different. Comeback to it later.
Write something else. (A different WIP, a poem, a quick short story, etc.)
Find inspiring writing music playlists on YouTube. (Themed music, POV playlists, ambient music, etc.)
Do some character or story prompts/questions to get a better idea of who or what youâre writing.
Word sprints. Set a timer and write as much as you can. Not a lot of time to overthink things.
Set your own goals and deadlines.
Write another scene from your WIP. (You donât have to write in order.) Write a scene you want to write, or the ending. (You can change it or scrap it if it doesnât fit into your story later.)
Write a scene for your WIP that you will never post/add to your story. A prologue, a different P.O.V., how your characters would react in a situation thatâs not in your story, a flashback, etc.
Write down a bunch of ideas. Things that could happen, thing that will never happen, good things, bad things.
Change the weather (in the story of course.)
Feel free to add your own.
#youâre so right about this#ugh this helped seeing a slight light in this dark tunnel Iâve been wandering around in lately

If I had a dollar when a queer mecha gauntlet brawler

with a dead mom and a dad who kinda sorta teeny tiny bit forced her into the protector role, but she still absolutely adores her younger sister

(said sister tried unaliving herself at some point)

falls in love with a dark-haired beauty

(the beauty is like a princess among her people)

but then the beauty leaves

and the brawler goes through a depression arc

but after that she reunites with her sister and found family

and then they find each other

and never let go again

...I'd have 2 dollars. Which isn't a lot. I need more.
