One of my absolute favorite things about the Mistborn series (era 1, specifically) is the bait-and-switch of the overarching plot.

Like, you go into it and you're like, "Yeah, okay. I'm reading one of the Big Fantasy Trilogies of the modern era. Hell yeah. What's this all about?"

And so you read. You get introduced to the characters, the magic system, and, most importantly, the central conflict: it's an assassination plot.

Clearly, the whole trilogy is going to be about finding a way to kill the god-emperor of the cruel and oppressive regime, and the final book will have them overthrow him and everything will Be Good.

"Of course that's what will happen," you think to yourself. "That's a pretty standard narrative structure."

So you keep reading.

But as you read the book, something doesn't feel right. The pacing seems... Off. Isn't this book moving too quickly?

And then, as you get around the second act of the book, it hits you all at once.

"Are they... Are they gonna successfully assassinate the Lord Ruler?? IN THE FIRST BOOK??"

It sure looks like it.

SO WHAT THE HELL ARE THE OTHER TWO BOOKS GONNA BE ABOUT.

Commission I just finished for @bravewriting of their AU/fic War Machines which you can read right HERE. It’s a Nuts & Dolts AU where Ruby and Penny were swapped at birth and Penny ends up on team RWBY (now team BSYP or Battleship). This scene is in Chapter 12 and is Penny coming out to her team as a robot girl

I had fun drawing this, but god damn multi person hugs are complicated. I had to color code the sketch just to keep track of all the limbs lol

The new rwby short reminded me of one of my favourite aspects of team rwby. Which is that it starts with Weiss and Blake being two traumatised teens with dark backstories who meet Ruby and Yang who are like wow! You guys seem to have a lot of baggage and we'd like to help with that. We're just normal sisters but we'll do our best :D

And then cut to 9 seasons later when Weiss and Blake have conquered their demons, reconnected with their families and are slowly healing meanwhile every small drip of lore we get about Ruby and Yang's family feels like this

MARCILLE'S DESPERATION FOR FALIN THE ENTIRE TIME. TO THE POINT OF NEEDING TO BE HELD BACK SO SHE DOESN'T RUSH IN AND GET HERSELF KILLED. THINKING THAT FALIN, HER FALIN WOULD NEVER HURT HER. GOD.

THEN DEFENDING HER DURING AND AFTER FALIN IS MERCILESSLY KILLING PEOPLE IN FRONT OF THEM AND BEGGING THEM NOT TO KILL HER. GOD. SAPPHICS PORTRAY DEVOTION LIKE NO OTHER

i have to say, interpreting laios as someone who’s completely not interested in humans is such a bad takeaway from him. it’s like people didn’t read the parts where he got so excited at anyone sharing his interest, or getting so deeply hurt by people who betrayed him. not to mention his destructive selflessness(“my pain doesn’t matter because falin suffered more than me”)

same as interpreting thistle as a fully grown adult and not someone with a teenage brain and body stuck in a thousand year arrested development, in a story that centers fantasy age dynamics and how it affects people. what a boring interpretation of the themes

Senshi making sure during the entire episode that Shuro's plate of food doesn't fall to the floor was one of the more quietly hilarious parts of the episode

like he's not getting involved in All That (seven people dead and several missing, Marcille getting branded a criminal, people starting a brawl)
