In ~these times~ it is important for queer people to be reminded of what "coming out" originally meant. "Coming out" did not mean telling all of your co-workers something super stigmatized and vulnerable about you, wearing your queer status on your sleeve in public, informing the police or government institutions about your sexuality, or even telling your parents. "Coming out" meant venturing out into the queer community; being among other queers as a queer yourself.
Coming out isn't about telling the entire world when doing so is not safe for you, it's not about arming your enemies with information they could use against you. No, coming out is about making a fulfilling queer life possible for yourself through participation in the queer community. It is about escaping the restrictions and dangers of the cisgender heterosexual world by rooting oneself more deeply into the queer one.
And you can always do that. No matter how oppressed we are. No matter how much the culture shifts and policies are enacted to terrorize us. We are always able to be ourselves when we are amongst each other. And living our queerness has always been a collective social project, not just a matter of personal exposure.

"Unbidden, an image of Jayce smiling in bed earlier this morning comes to mind. Viktor's hand on his cheek. His slightly chapped lips. His bedhead. Stubble. His smile lines. The shape of his jaw."

Hotel Reverie starts as a satirical commentary on soulless remakes, and one of the "jokes" is that they recast the main white guy as a Black woman, in a period piece where a Black woman feels anachronistic. This could have become a conservative comment about "forced diversity" and the woke agenda. Or it could have been a progressive comment about Hollywood casting non-white actors in color blind roles while ignoring the racist undertones of the media they're adapting.
But the brilliance of the episode is that it ends up being neither. As soon as Clara/Dorothy becomes sentient, the central theme shifts around human connection and what links us to the poeple who preceeded us. It is heavily implied that the real Dorothy was a lesbian and deeply unhappy in a time period that did not allow her self expression. Her AI version finds this freedom in her relationship with Brandy.
In the end, the message of the episode feels more that poeple have always been poeple. Society changes, becomes more accepting of certain communities, but that doesn't mean those minorities did not exist in the past. And the movie being a success despite the anachronisms is a proof that it works both ways, and modern day people can still relate to old timey stories and project ourselves in them with our own modern mindset.

Film producers shouldn’t cut corners and use AI to create films cheaply because the lead actress might get trapped in a computer simulation with the ghost of a closeted actress from the 1940s and end up having a tragic lesbian romance and then where would you be

Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.
The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.
There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.

Thinking about how Odysseus carved the wedding bed out of an olive tree, which means the bed is rooted in the ground.
Thinking about the line “You don’t think I know my own palace? I built it!”.
Thinking about the fact that Odysseus built his entire palace around that olive tree, his and Penelope’s wedding bed, a symbol of their love.
Odysseus’ world is literally built around his love for Penelope.
…..i’m not crying, i just have an odypen in my eye.
