A Diagnosis is Not a Descriptor There are people in this world who have a diagnosis, and then there are people who use diseases as adjectives. People will say they’re acting “bipolar”, as if it’s something that’s part of their personality. For some people, deeply depressed days and manic moments aren’t something they get to snap out of. People, please tell me why someone who is perfectly fine would willingly associate themselves with the hideous illnesses of the mind, because I will never understand what is so precious about depression. Depression is sitting in a strip mall church at confession knowing damn well that you’re damned to hell It is not Sunday sadness, it’s not bitterness, and it’s not feeling a little blue. It’s a terrible monster that creates a home inside of you. OCD isn’t sorting skittles by color before you inhale them. It’s crawling out of your skin because you believe that your veins need to be scrubbed clean. ADD isn’t difficulty doing homework when the day is beautiful and bright It’s a complete inability to finish even the simplest of tasks because even the noise of the rumbling in your stomach can distract you from paying your phone bill. You don’t realize until the next day, when you lose a client because you missed their call. Anxiety is not getting butterflies in your belly when you see the boy you like. Anxiety is sticking your head out of your girlfriends passenger side window because your hot flashes are making you nauseous and you’d rather look like the dog she never wanted than vomit in her lap. Alcoholism isn’t three beers at a baseball game. It’s five sweaty fingers wrapped tightly around a glass of gin slick with condensation at seven AM, because that’s been your breakfast beverage of choice for the last two years. This is not cocktails at Cathy’s twenty third birthday party. This is their life, this is what killed someone’s wife, daughter, brother, lover.
