6 sun protection options for your home
An architectural project is like a person: unique and unrepeatable. This means that there is no generic solution as such when we talk about sunstroke. Each house is built in a specific latitude, with certain orientation, window sizes and particular building materials. Even houses or apartments built in series have different requirements because, as the position of the sun or the floor where they are changed, the light conditions change, among other things. The recommendation is that before venturing to make any changes, take the above into account. Here is a list of the most common sun protection options, their pros and cons so you can choose the most suitable one for your case: • Louvers . These are, in a nutshell, blinds that go outside, on the facade. The great advantage of this system is that it protects from the sun's rays before they reach inside the building. What happens when you put any element inside, is that the sun, once the glass passes, begins to transmit heat. In those cases, you protect from light, but not from heat. The louvers, on the other hand, prevent the sun from reaching the glass. Advantage : significant savings in mechanical cooling systems (air conditioning), greater thermal and light comfort. Its maintenance is almost nil. Disadvantage: They are expensive because of the type of material (weatherproof) and because they require special installation. In addition, you need a preliminary solar study to determine if they work best horizontally or vertically and at what angle of inclination. If you want them to be mobile, an automation mechanism is necessary to control them from the inside, to your liking.

They are something like canopies, the difference is that these are not intended to protect from rain or sun in the hallways or at the door of the house. They are simply an extension of the slab above the window with the intention of blocking the passage of sunlight. Like the previous example, they prevent the entry of the sun inside. Advantage : it is economical and very low maintenance. Disadvantages: since it is a single element, it generally has to be long. The length must be obtained with a simple solar calculation, because if the overhang is too short, it will not protect as it should and, if it is too long, you may have structural problems or perhaps the interior space will get too dark. You should consider it when using it in a restoration work so that it does not represent an additional cost. If it is a newly built house, it must be done by a trained worker. • Awning . Also known as brise soleil, it is a lightweight alternative to cantilevers. Similarly, to protect optimally, a solar calculation is required to determine length. It can include eyebrow or not. Advantage : relatively cheap. It can be semi permeable solid. Disadvantage : you have to take care of the exterior appearance and, in case of buildings, they probably do not allow its use for a single apartment. Depending on the material, it may be durable or not.

There is a huge number of models and finishes, as well as price ranges. The installation is economical. Disadvantage : once the sun passes through the glass, the heat is transmitted first to the blinds and then to the rest of the room, so they are not very useful thermally. If they are dark, they aggravate the situation.

These have an infrared and UV filter that protects the user's skin and prevents objects near the window from becoming discolored or mistreated by the action of the sun. Advantage : University town Islamabad it is an excellent complement to any of the above options because it provides additional protection. Cleaning and zero maintenance during the life time. If you want greater protection, you can purchase a low-e system, consisting of two glasses, the exterior with solar film, gas and an intermediate reflective film. Disadvantage: Although they reduce heat transfer a bit, this is not their main function. The darker the tintex, the greater the protection. This does not go with any architectural project, because it completely changes the exterior appearance. It is not recommended as the only protection system, since a very sunny space will continue to be with or without film.
