it’s been said before but im thinking about harry goodsir and his impotent tools of imperialism, how he never manages to heal anyone throughout the show. david young, dying and knows it, begs goodsir not to cut his body up after he expires. goodsir performs an autopsy the morning after his death. he tells silna he can’t save her father only after he has very demonstrably caused him agony in the effort, shoving metal implements into his bullet wound. he poisons jacko for the sake of scientific observation of a phenomenon he can do nothing to help or prevent. he begs silna (in english! a language she does not understand!) to believe that this isn’t how englishmen are, it’s your home and fear of your people that have made us act this way.

he cant help morfin, he can’t help collins (but he sure as fuck can offer them cocaine, the ingestion of which not only directly contributes to collins’ death but also tuunbaq’s decline), his final act before he kills himself is to poison his flesh so thoroughly that he can’t be safely consumed, and he uses his imperial medicines to do it. every attempt he makes to help falls flat, but he sure succeeds in causing harm, and he always uses the tools of the empire (surgical, medicinal, rhetorical) to do it. he learns inuktitut to publish a dictionary at home. he slits his wrists with broken glass brought from england. the fact that jacko is herself a creature twice displaced by imperialism—the fuck is a capuchin monkey doing in nunavut, or england for that matter??—and she’s the unfortunate subject of goodsir’s lead poisoning experiment is so deliciously vile it makes me want to shake him. how do you not understand??

even when he tries to stand up to hickey by refusing to butcher gibson, he does so in the language of victorian classism—reminding hickey that he grew up poor, everyone can tell by his accent, and that goodsir, with his surgical education, did not. as if it matters who was poor in britain when you are both starving to death in the arctic together now. as if any of your life in britain matters now, has ever mattered in the arctic. by which morals and practicals are you defining yourself, at this point? when will you start to get it? is god here, captain? any god? it doesn’t matter.

on a separate but related note if you are invested in a politic that includes the right to full body autonomy i wholeheartedly believe you have to shift your viewpoint on behaviors that you view as morally wrong and/or harmful, such as drug use, addiction, eating disorders, self harm, etc. this requires a dialectical materialist unpacking of the structures that paint these behaviors as ones that are deviant and the ways in which institutions are justified in criminalizing these behaviors and further restricting people's freedoms. unpacking the ways in which capitalism also frames our understanding of what behaviors are "wrong" and what bodies are more likely to be criminalized and/or institutionalized is also necessary for this work to begin. this is an admittedly difficult conversation to have. how do we imagine a politic that defends those who engage in harmful behavior? one place to begin might be the concept of dignity of risk, which comes from disability studies and that posits that people should have the inherent right to self-determination and the choice to make decisions that may cause harm. people are going to do things with their bodies that you do not like and demonstrate behaviors that you view as disgusting and wrong. regardless of how or if they choose to stop engaging in this behavior, the model of harm reduction (which to be clear does not solves the vast range sociopolitical problems that often times prompt people to engage in these behaviors) without moralizing is, i'd argue, a much more radical and human/e approach to treating people with the inherent respect they deserve
