Elena Marie McCarthy was born to Melinda McCarthy and a young man she had a dalliance with on her college’s spring break, not knowing he was the god Apollo in disguise. Twenty-one and not ready for the responsibility of a child, Melinda left her daughter to be raised by her parents while she attended school. For the first few years, she visited, but she never showed much natural inclination towards motherhood, and eventually, she moved to the other side of the country and stopped contacting her parents and child.

When Ellie was thirteen, her grandparents passed away. Afraid of being sent into foster care, Ellie hid in the house with their bodies and was eventually found by a satyr called Rowan. She was taken to Camp Half-Blood, where she was claimed by Apollo, and began training. When Ellie was fifteen, she met a son of Hades called Jericho, who was two years her senior.

Shortly after Ellie’s sixteenth birthday, the two began dating. At first, everything seemed fine, but as time went on, Jericho became increasingly possessive. He began to subtly isolate Ellie from her half-siblings and her friends, convincing her that none of them cared about her as deeply as he did and that he was the only person who truly understood her. He became controlling, attempting to dictate what she did and when she was allowed to do it. If she disagreed with him or said something Jericho didn’t like, he would berate and humiliate her. Eventually, he began pressuring her into sex, insisting that if she really loved him, she would give him what he “needed” despite Ellie’s asexuality. After a continued period of badgering, Ellie eventually gave in, which led to Jericho then insisting that Ellie was his, and nobody but him was good for her.

When Ellie was nineteen, Jericho grew distant and snappish, scolding her for the smallest of perceived transgressions. After months of said treatment, he announced that he had realized they “weren’t working”, and dumped her, vanishing from the camp shortly afterwards. Ellie, shaken by the end of a relationship that had become her whole world, entered a downward spiral that was eventually halted by her half-siblings, who helped her in the beginning of her recovery. Determined to never be broken down again, Ellie dedicated herself to becoming a force of light and positivity among the camp, offering comfort and support to anyone who might need it.
