Escape Room part 2
Harper heard Benny’s playful shouts turn to shouts in alarm and looked up from her drawing to see a man pulling Benny towards a van parked in the street, similar to the one that had taken Hazel. Jumping up with a speed she never had before, Harper ran barefoot to the man and pushed him against his car with more strength than a 13-year-old should’ve had. The man let go of Benny and cried out in pain, then anger.
“Benny! Get inside right now!” Harper shrieked, repeatedly hitting the man with her fists.
Benny ran towards the house as fast as he could as Harper repetitively screamed, “Do not come outside! Lock the door and call 911, call 911!”
The man, who had recovered from the shock of the girl attacking him, was now recovering his wits, and was grasping for Harper’s wrists. He quickly overpowered her and growled, “You little shit. I guess I’ll take you instead.”
Harper spat in his face and started screaming again, but the man banged her head against the side of the van and her vision went black.
The opening of a door somewhere above her brought Harper back to her present situation. She was momentarily blinded by the bright light streaming from the open door when a figure stepped into the threshold, blocking the light from her face.
“Awake again, are we?” a deep, scratchy voice rumbled, causing Harper to involuntarily shudder and made the voice laugh cruelly. He started walking down the stairs and when he had reached her, he bent and brushed his fingers across her cheek. Harper recoiled at his touch, but because she was bound and unable to go far, she was made to endure his unwanted advances. He laughed again and said,
“I’m increasingly glad I took you, and not your stupid little brother.” At this Harper growled at him but looked down at her lap and said nothing. She didn’t want to give him any reaction. Which is what he was looking for. The man smiled, stood, and started roaming the basement,
“I would’ve made it quick for him, but this is much more fun,” he spoke, coming to stop in front of Harper…

Escape Room part 1
*warning: the following story contains content that is not for sensitive readers (foul language, murder, kidnapping, and violence) Reader's discretion is advised
Harper could not help but remember how she got here. She was bent down on her knees, arms tied around a pole behind her, and panting for breath. She wasn’t really fazed by the darkness and cold surrounding her, nor the blood oozing from her lip, forehead, and nose. She knew she wasn’t going to survive the day, therefore, she allowed herself to go back in time to an event three years ago and also the past few days.
Harper Maddox was always alert. She always noticed where everyone was, what they were doing, and who they were with. But she wasn’t always like this. Three years previously, when Harper was ten, her little 7-year-old sister Hazel was kidnapped while Harper was supposed to be watching her and their 4-year-old brother Benny. They had been playing in the front yard and Hazel had asked for a snack. Had Harper noticed the man standing across the street, she would have brought Hazel inside with her and Benny, but their neighborhood was considered rather safe, and she had done this exact same thing numerous times before.
She walked back outside to see Hazel being thrown in the back of a van by a tall white man, then driven off. Three days later her body was found by the side of a road thirty minutes away from their house. Harper never forgave herself for failing her parents and failing her little sister. She resolved to always watch over Benny and to always be aware of her surroundings.
Three years later, Harper had kept up her resolution. Still bitter by what had happened to Hazel, she would never let Benny out of her sight. Now seven, Benny was a very active little boy and always wanted to play outside. Harper would always stay outside with him and brought him inside with her any time she needed to go inside.
The day everything went to shit she had been on the sidewalk, her back to the street, drawing with chalk while Benny was in front of her play-fighting with the tree in the yard….
