Now that con is over, a bit of reflection:
👍🏻:
The Sims costumes were a huge hit, and easy/comfy to wear. I wore the plate on the back of my wrist, so it wasn’t even in the way or annoying. Definitely bringing those back into the rotation.
Totally worth it to spend the $70 to get novelty glasses with my bifocal prescription rather than just getting cheap ones and not having full vision.
The crossbow got many compliments, and held up well. I do want to redo the strap, though.
The elf ears I got at Planet 2024 were so comfy I forgot I had them on. Wore them all the way home, including the stop at IKEA, which I’m sure confused some people.
👎:
Back when we had better stamina and heat tolerance, we would wear the most complicated/impressive cosplays on Saturdays because that’s when the most people were there. But now it’s so crowded and hectic and we wear out/overheat so much easier, I think that’s the best day to wear something comfy and easy. I was so sweaty in that beanie that my braids were wet.
People understood Y2K Loki, but I don’t think they understood what I was going for. Maybe if we do Loki variants again I’ll do something flashier. Like 80s hip hop Loki? With a big Flavor Flav clock but it’s actually Miss Minutes?
The hair and makeup really shouldn’t ever be left to the last minute. The hair I ordered for Brestine was different than what I wanted, and I didn’t have time to mess with it, so it wasn’t what I envisioned and wasn’t comfortable. And I rushed through the very bare minimum makeup so it didn’t read as purple overall as I wanted, but we had to be out of the Airbnb by 10am so there was no way to spend more time on it.

Planet Comicon Day 3
We’re home from con now and absolutely exhausted. But I got a few more boxes checked off the bingo card!
We found several vendors with the dreaded 3D printed dragons:

Miniature pony service animal:

Bought a new game:

We did see some “too young for that cosplay” examples, both in terms of “that’s not really appropriate” and “the character you’re cosplaying is obviously way way way before your time”, but I didn’t get any photos for hopefully obvious reasons.
And finally, we got a new addition for Agenger’s tower, which deserves some explanation: We have an IKEA glass cabinet in our house which houses Marvel action figures. Thor lives in the top floor with Loki, Sylvie, and some very retro furniture. Steve and Bucky with their Cap-themed couch, a random head of cabbage, a baseball bat, and a large fork are their downstairs neighbors.
When I put that on the bingo card I was thinking about decor or furniture, like maybe a magnet to hang as a poster or something in one of the “apartments”, but we got Thor and the Lokis a new Loki roommate.

So, not quite a bingo but way closer than my card from last year!

Totally forgot to post last night because I was exhausted and packing to leave!
Planet Comicon Day 2!
The Loki Variants met lots of other Lokis, but we didn’t consistently get pics.

I did mark off a couple more bingo card squares:
MLM vendor…

And I finally managed to get not one, but TWO Bucky Lego figures! We check with every Lego vendor at every con, and they always either sold out or didn’t bring any, but not this weekend! Luck was on our side!!

Oh, and I finished the chest guard as well!

Planet Comicon, Day One!
We didn’t get there late enough to avoid a long line to get in, but at least we had our wristbands already and avoided standing in the much longer other line!
Sims costume had zero issues and was very comfortable all day!

It’s too late to dig around and wake up Kourt to add the pic, but Alex Kingston ate my goopy carbonara in our photo op!
Also checked off two boxes (and the free space) from my bingo - saw a couple other Sims and found a military recruiter:

The chest armor for Sunday is very close to finished as well. Should be no problem to get it done in time.

T-minus 12 hours or so until Plnet Comicon!
I got the bolero done!

I think the chest piece will also be doable. Doubtful on the second bracer.
All the props and pieces traveled without damage, despite me dropping the crossbow off the table and knocking it on a few door frames. Craftsmanship is key, y’all.
One thing I forgot to do is do a bingo card for this year. I made one for last year and was very disappointed as to how few spots I was able to check off. Maybe tomorrow I’ll make a new one before we head to Bartle Hall.

T-minus 1.5 days until Planet Comicon!
I did not get as much time as I wanted to work on costumes and props today, but it’s time to get packed! Most of the day was devoted to cleaning up the house and having some friends over, plus last minute laundry, but we wanted the house cleaned up before we left anyway, so it’s all good.
Plate of goopy carbonara: Done! Is it dry? I mean, what does dry really mean, anyway? On the surface it is. Who knows if the inside “noodles” will still be goopy on Friday! It’s a functional prop, and that’s all that matters!

Everything else: packed to be worked on at the Airbnb
I got a little bit done, but decided it was better to just pack up all the supplies and pieces and take it along to see how much I can finish between now and Sunday. No sense losing sleep time over it or rushing the packing and forgetting something.

It’s all gathered! Kourt has already declared that we’ll listen to Hamilton on the drive instead of my car music since she says we always listen to my music and it’s her turn to choose. Whatever.

T-minus 2.5 days until Planet Comicon!
How did I do on the con crunch task list today?
Strap attached to crossbow: Done!

Plate of fake goopy carbonara: still not dry enough for “sauce” or embellishments to the wrist strap, but I have high hopes for tomorrow. For now it looks…. gross.

Crossbow bolt ends: abandoned for now. I’m declaring them unnecessary given the time constraints.
Chest armor: in progress! I made the pattern by wrapping my chest in plastic wrap and duct tape, and then cut into the leather coat for the pieces. I’ve started sewing it together.

Half-vest/bolero: also in progress! I cut down a black dress shirt and am now adding trim and embellishments. I think it’s gonna look great! (Ignore the cat hair)

Bracers are still at the half done point. Would it be weird to only wear one? Like an archer’s arm guard?
Also, I think maybe I’ll just not hem the head scarf, and leave the cut edges raw to save some time.
Even if only the vest gets done, I think it’ll be a good costume.
Wednesday I have some friends coming over briefly, and I should really go to the archery range, and then there’s the packing. But the deadline isn’t quite here, and I’ll have some crafting time to get more accomplished.

It’s con crunch time!!!
Planet Comicon begins on Friday, so I’m down to the wire on remaining costume work. I also have some people coming over on Wednesday night, and we’ll spend Thursday getting to KC and picking up wristbands and all that jazz, so ideally everything should be done by the time I go to bed Wednesday night/Thursday morning.
But we’re not in bad shape.
Costumes for Friday: Sims
Plumbobs were done a few weeks ago, and the hats got here last week, and I’d done a bit of a test of concept for how the wires would go into the hats, but as of this morning none of the wires had actually been installed in the hats. Got that done today.

The only other thing I needed to do for this costume is make the plate of goopy carbonara to stick to my hand. I got a cheap plastic plate at WalMart and poked some holes for elastic to go around my wrist and finger. I’m probably going to sew some beads on the black elastic so it looks like a bracelet. But all that has to wait for the Mod Podge soaked yarn pasta to dry. Which hopefully does not take multiple days. I still need to put the “sauce” on top.

Costumes for Saturday: Loki Variants
Finished rhinestones on Kourt’s velour tracksuit, so my tasks for her costumes are done. Always a good idea to do the wife’s stuff first and push the deadline on my own, otherwise she stresses out.
For mine, a lot of the costume is bought/thrifted. I already bought a gold beanie and last week I got some resin devil horn barrettes for horns, which I did have to paint gold, but those are done. I ordered some appropriate glasses from Zenni because it sucks to not be able to see at con, and those came last week as well. I bought a Loki t-shirt and some jewelry already, and I’m going to wear the Docs I already have, so all that was really left to do was take in the jeans I thrifted.

Costume for Sunday: Brestine the High Elf Rogue
Here’s where it gets hairy.
Now, this is an OC, so it’s not like anyone will know but me if the costume isn’t complete. And the main prop has been finished for literally years, I bought elf ears last year at con, the boots I already own, and I thrifted the pants and top last week. Also got the hair for her braid. The main bits are pretty much done.
However, the crossbow needs the strap put on. I was going to mock up the ends of some crossbow bolts so it would look like I had them in my boot, but I don’t even know what to use for feathers. I got a shirt that I’m going to cut down to make a scarf to wear on my head, so that needs to be cut and hemmed. I intend to make a bit of chest armor from an old leather coat I have, but I haven’t even made the pattern yet. Plus altering a shirt into a vest/bolero thing. And bracers. I cut up an old pair of boots that don’t fit and made one bracer, even painted it with a cool color shifting glaze, but getting the one done took longer than I wanted it to.
So will all that get done? Who knows?
