salem-saintâ:Â
Breakfast, and a few more hours of sleep, had helped. A little. So god bless Kai. Salem still felt like he had one foot in the grave; but housekeeping had asked if they wanted the room cleaned, and though heâd dearly love to nurse his hangover in bed all day, the desire for fresh sheets and a bathroom that didnât smell like last night won out. The sun was still violently hot, and he didnât want to go far; once the room had been cleaned, he would be crawling back into bed. For now, he slid into the pool. An oversized pair of sunglasses protected his eyes from the worst of the glare, and the cool, clean water soothed his pounding head and nauseated stomach. He was content just floating on his back, enjoying the fact that most of the hotelâs residents seemed to have gone out for the day, when he heard footsteps. Squinting over his sunglasses just enough to ascertain that it was one of the squad, Salem shook his head.
âNot a word. I donât want to remember a single thing I did or said last night.â
TJ, wearing her thickest sunglasses to match Salemâs and hoping to get some sun and think long and hard about her life choices, didnât do anything but snap her fingers in applause of Salemâs performance last night. âYeah, yeah, none of us are quite ready to replay the hits from last night, are we?â she asked, laying her towel out on a lawn chair and preparing to sit and watch her old friend float lazily in the water. She almost wanted to join, but needed to warm up like a lizard first.

truth or dare: totally cool and chill
from cleo raja â truth: since coming back together again, who can you not stand? or just donât like all that much? or dare: kiss everyone here, besides me, and tell us whoâs the best.
âIâll be the first to admit, I definitely think Kaiâs too hot now, so fuck that,â TJ began. She was feeling pleasantly loose, having helped herself to a shower smirnoff before the game began. âBut in general, everybodyâs exactly the same as they were. The only difference is that Julian and Jenny are stuck with us and canât ditch us for all their richer, cooler friends. Iâm glad to be hanginâ out with my old buddies.â
from dakota harrison â truth: whatâs one time you felt like the squad let you down? or dare: eat something you donât like, right here and now.
Eating gross things was a Powell family tradition, and TJ had always had weird taste buds anyway. She considered, peering around the hotel room. âDid anybody bring a slim jim or jerky or something?â Since they had roadtripped, the teriyaki jerky was eventually produced-- TJ opened a new drink in preparation to eat a single nugget, choking it down before downing the third wine cooler just to rinse the taste of haunted cow from her mouth. âGod, that mummy heat is so gross. It makes me feel like a zombie and I donât know how anyone can casually snack on it-- but make note my mamma ainât raised no bitch.â
from jenny jordan â truth: have you ever had a crush on someone in the room or dare: compliment me for three minutes straight.
She could already feel her cheeks burning at the idea of confessing to a crush, even in her late twenties, amongst her friends, so instead TJ was content to bite the bullet. She leaned forward, looking deeply into Jennyâs eyes and stated: âStart the timer.â Waiting for the go ahead, she began the flow of words. Sheâs already drunk, so they flow quickly and with sincerity. âJenny, youâre so hot you put us all to shame. Your skin looks, and I cannot stress this enough, amazing. You could crush my head with your thighs and I would say thank you. Your hair smells like sunshine and your teeth are super white. You never made me feel out of place when I was an awkward androgynous teen, and Iâm really grateful for that. Iâve always loved your fashion sense and itâs only gotten cooler in the last decade. Remember when you loaned me a scrunchie in the eleventh grade? I do. It was the cutest part of my whole damn outfit, all thanks to you. I always thought you were really clever, and sometimes I used to suspect you could read minds. I think your job and the connections you make there are super cool, and I really envy your jetsetting lifestyle. You should have a show about your life like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and you are so interseting I really would watch every episode--â The timer went off and TJ drew in a deep breath, feeling a little nauseous for having gushed nonstop without coming up for air. âDonât let any of that go to your head, now, babe.âÂ
from julian campbell â truth: what is the cruelest thing you have ever done to a friend? or dare: let the person on your right give you a hair cut, right now.
âWell what Iâm not gonna do is give any of you drunkie-drunks a pair of scissors,â TJ asserted. She was drunk but she sure wasnât that drunk. Besides, if it wasnât something she could undo after her hangover wore off, she wanted absolutely no part in it. âSo I guess Iâll just have to admit to trying to exclude Cleo a little when we were all in school, yâknow, cus she was such a baby and it kindof made me feel bad to be willfully providing her with booze and weed and things that would rot her tiny pre-teen brain. Sorry, Cleo. I already told you youâre way cooler now, though, so now return the favor and donât do anything to me while I sleep.â
from kai eastaughffe â truth: would you kill a spider for me? or dare: kill the spider in my room for me.
TJ let out a dramatic sigh and got to her feet. The booze hit her then, she realized as the world tilted sharply to the right and she braced one hand on the wall behind her, trying to look casual as everything slowly righted itself. âCâmon, A-Kai Berry, show me where the spiderâs at. Iâll keep you safe.â She didnât even really want to kill the thing, but a dare was a dare so she made quick work of it with Kaiâs hotel room remote.
from salem st. ives â truth: do you think your family was right to warn you to stay away from the dirtbag? or dare: phone any one of your brothers and tell them kai has always had a crush on him.
TJ barked out a laugh, completely forgetting the first option as the tantalizing dare was presented. âOh, baby, you got it,â she agreed, pulling her phone out and waiting for the Face ID to unlock it. âSiri, call Miley Cyrus.â The phone rang a few times before TJâs youngest brother Miles picked up. âTo preface this, I do need you to send me a picture of Gizmo, stat, because I miss him,â TJ started, not even waiting for Miles to ask why it was he was calling her at such a late hour, clearly intoxicated. âBut I did call you to let you know that all those years ago? My friend Kai was like, totally in love with you. Used to stare at your closed bedroom door while you were being a super emo, and pine for you, waiting for you to come out.â âWell, youâre clearly drunk,â Miles responded finally. âBut thatâs good to know, I guess. Which oneâs Kai, anyway?â âOh, you know the one. Skinny, big hair, looks a little nervous. Heâs a lawyer now, though, so you could do worse.â Miles snorted, which TJ knew was an acknowledgement-- he knew exactly who she was talking about. âYeah, yeah. Your dogâs asleep, do you still want a picture?â âAbsolutely I do. Thanks for pickinâ up, Smiley. Go to sleep soon Iâll see ya in a couple days.â âYeah, yeah. Night, Teej.â âGânite!â She let the call end, looking over at Kai. âMiles is just a simple woodworker, but I bet he thinks youâre cute. He could be your trophy husband.â
from samuel flores â truth: do you wish that the squad had never parted ways? or dare: let each member of the squad send one text to anyone they want in your phone..
Since TJ had already tucked her phone away, she decided to take the truth, nodding empathetically as she finished her drink. It seemed wise to steel herself before this confession. âYou guys were my only friends, like ever.â She lets out a nervous half-laugh. âSeriously, when I moved here nobody thought I could talk, remember? It wasnât until I was accepted by all of you guys that I felt like it was, yâknow, even worth it. Talking. And now Iâm doing too much of it, a little? It wouldâve been nice to celebrate everyoneâs accomplishments when they happened. Coming together again like how we did is a real bummer.â
from skylar murphy â truth: whatâs your biggest worry in life? what keeps you up at night? or dare: confide in someone you normally wouldnât confide in.
Skylarâs question is the one that gives TJ the most pause. Maybe its because her drink is gone, maybe its because her tongue feels funny, but she takes a long time, chin tucked into her knees before responding. âI think I worry that, Iâm going to be alone. Not like, romantically or whatever,â TJ clarifies, waving that away in case anyone tries to remind her that she donât need no man. âIâm not worried about that. But... I just said you guys were my only friends. I think I just loved you all so much itâs been really hard to make space in my life for new people even after all these years. I think I worry that I canât ever get our old friendships back, so Iâm going to be alone.â Since that was thoroughly depressing, she reached for a cup that wasnât empty and tried to settle comfortably back into her spot. âWhoâs next?â

Heâd only really been referring to the heat, which had him feeling out of sorts. The funeral certainly hadnât been easy. He wasnât sure what âthe good stuffâ would look like these days - things didnât feel so simple anymore. âNot sure I really feel like showing off any of my âprimal urgesâ,â he grimaced slightly, it sounded revealing, âis that bit really a compulsory part of getting to the fun things? You got something you need to tell us all, TJ? Feeling repressed?â
She blinked at his response, realizing far too late he hadnât been talking about the groupâs psyche-- just how brutally hot Coney was. âOh,â she began, leaning back as their sundaes were delivered. âI mean, Iâve never been anything but upfront, I donât really âdoâ repressed.â Her brows arched over at him to indicate she might be the only one here who felt that way. âBut, yâknow, people need to hash some things out. Itâs been such a long time, donât you miss everybody?â Was she really so alone in wanting her friends back? TJ chose to eat instead of waiting for a reply, feeling thoroughly embarrassed.

Jules shook his head wordlessly, bemused. Dakota had surprised him too, but perhaps not as much as the others - heâd certainly been privy to Dakotaâs ambition in the past. âGood choice,â he nodded, tapping his card to pay and leading her over to his favourite booth by the floor-length windows, which looked out over the beach, fairground lights glittering to the side. They would bring the sundaes over. âYouâre so welcome - least I could do,â he shrugged, âthe heat seriously is too much, isnât it? It was easier to navigate all of this stuff back in Manhasset, when everyone wasnât so flustered.â
TJâs head tilted slightly as she assessed Julesâ statement. âWas it? Easier, I mean,â she began, drawing one leg up as she sat in the booth. âWe just felt so bad for Sammy I think itâs nice to get out of here and, yâknow, move on a little. Catch up some more.â She hadnât heard much from their doctor friend, besides of course the invitation sheâd gotten and then had redacted, but TJ doubted he was at ready to talk about that just yet. âMaybe we just need all these primal urges to come right up to the surface so we can get to the good stuff after.â

Cleo pursed her lips in thought, trying to think back to those songs on the radio. Back when she was thirteen, she listened to trash music that she was frankly too embarrassed to admit now. âI liked this one whenever it came on,â Cleo shared, finally decided on Bedrock by Young Money. As the song played, she hummed in approval. She still liked it. âWhat kinda memories were you havinâ to Just Dance? Pep rallies?â Cleo snorted.
Associating this hit with Cleo especially made her laugh a little, but kept braiding as the younger offered a quick jab at her taste. âWell, I wasnât in the eighth grade when this song came out, so I remember being pretty buzzed and doing a sock slide down someoneâs hallway to it.â Was it Kelleyâs house? Sammyâs? TJ couldnât remember. She finished one braid, tugging it tight for good measure before slapping an elastic on the end and moving to the other side of Cleoâs head. âLife was simpler back then. Just us and meat dress Lady Gaga taking on the world.â

âit wasnât intentional!â leigh hissed as she pulled tj farther away from their previous spot. if she hadnât been way too conscious about not acting like her high school self, she would have laughed. such scenario reminded her so much of when she and salem would pull pranks on people at school, whilst tj was just at the side, watching it all unfold. âi didnât know he was there, okay? i was innocently skipping stones. now, letâs grab something to eat. iâm freaking starving, tee.â
âBut why would you do that with so many people around?â The question was simple, but of course it was also Leigh, and the mention of food perked her up more than anything. She kept up with Leigh and did her best to look innocent despite having not done anything. âYeah, ok, letâs get some cheese fries or something. Maybe a slushie.â The mention of hot cheese fries had to be offset by something cold. âJust stay behind me and try to look like you arenât throwing rocks at people on the beach.â

âWhat. Ever.â Cleo brushed off, trying to hold still. That wasnât the hard part, the hard part that it was boring. âYeah, I hear you. I was just wondering. If anyone put on Slipknot, I would leave.â Truth be told, Cleo didnât exactly know them or their sound, but she thought it was something hard metal or whatever. That was definitely not her scene. TJâs request was easy, but Cleo waited a moment, just for TJ to loosen some grip on her hair so she could reach over. While she didnât feel like eating the chips, Cleo still took the first chip for herself before holding like, three up for TJ. âMen do suck. You got any good song requests that follow those guidelines?â
TJ accepted the proffered snacks by dipping her head and eating them out of Cleoâs hand, since hers were both buried in the otherâs thick mane of hair. With a muffled thanks she set back to work, rejuvenated by the calories. The sore subject of men wasnât one that TJ knew enough about to delve into with Cleo, so for now sheâd note it and leave it alone. She hummed at the question, considering. âSomething beachy seems like the obvious choice. But Iâm always nostalgic, so dâyou remember anything that was cool like a decade ago that still slaps? Iâm down to listen to the good old stuff and relive our youth. Oh, like that old, old, old Lady Gaga song, Just Dance! Had some good times to that one.â

âI guess I must have changed since high school, because now Iâd much rather watch Dakota and Kelley fight to the death, smugly from the sidelines, than get in there myself,â he nodded, genuinely impressed with his own display of self-knowledge. Heâd never been very good at naming his emotions, articulating his motivations. He rolled his eyes a little at the cashier with the air of a long-suffering older brother type. âOne triple chocolate-mint sundae and whatever this joker is having.â He pulled out his wallet, nudging TJ with his hip to prompt her into ordering.Â
âYeah, what the fuck is up with Kota being a behemoth, by the way? Dâyou think heâs some kinda sleeper Captain America or something?â The picture of Dakota and Kelley competing was funnier with their old teenage selves, but it was interesting to think their old friend might have a shot. âCan I get a hot fudge sundae with rocky road and cookie dough, please?â Addressing the teens at work in the ice cream parlor, TJ paused to look back at Jules. âThanks for the ice cream, by the way. Iâm already way less aggro than I was even mere minutes ago. This heat is killing me.â  Â

Cleo obliged, sitting in front of TJ. âI donât cry,â she humphed. âJust donât pull too hard. And also, can it be like two french braids? I can pull up a picture.â Honestly, she figured TJ didnât need a picture, despite offering, so what Cleo did on her phone instead was browse through Spotify before putting on some Lizzo. She loved her and assumed with her rise onto mainstream, it was a safe enough bet that upbeat tunes were also TJâs jam. âWhat kind of music do you like?â
âCrybaby is a general term but go off, queen,â TJ replied, gently waving away Cleoâs offer as she started brushing the younger womanâs hair. The familiar intro to Juice started as she was parting Cleoâs hair down the middle, humming a little before responding. âAnything, really, Iâm not picky. Couldnât get into like, Slipknot but I still gave it a shot.â She started braiding at Cleoâs hairline, pulling tight but not hard so Cleo wouldnât complain. TJ didnât mind braiding and was pretty good at it, but beyond her own hair she didnât really get much practice. The muscle memory, she thought as she weaved strands between her fingers, was infallible. âLizzoâs great though, who doesnât love feeling fantastic and/or not needing a man? Also, will you feed me a Cheeto? Theyâre right behind you and now Iâm thinkinâ about food.â

Cleoâs thanks would be saved for after her hair was braided. âNo one made food plans so I was planning on doing room service or door dash or there was a place nearby I saw with shrimp tacos that Iâve been thinking about since we passed it.â Not waiting for a response, she shut the bathroom door and took a good twenty minutes before coming back out. Figured sheâd be quick since it was a shower to get clean versus a leisurely one. âWe should steal the tiny shampoos,â Cleo said holding the bottle up, inspecting it. âTheyâre guava.â
Just the mention of tacos made TJâs stomach rumble, which sold her completely on the exchange. âAlright then, weâll get tacos. I want like, three,â she said, before pulling the hotel roomâs desk chair out and gesturing for Cleo to sit. She looked around for a brush that wasnât hers, but contented to use the one sheâd brought anyway if her roommate didnât provide one. âPop a squat and steel yourself,â TJ warned. âNo crybabies allowed and if you do start whining Iâll stop.â

He knew it was a rather feeble olive branch to offer, but he was visibly cheered that TJ responded so positively. âDoesnât have to be that regimented,â he grinned, âI havenât been swimming in the ocean in forever - I was thinking more floating about like a starfish and working on my tan.â He paused. âAnd then we can start the training regime the day after. Fifty laps, relay race against Dakota and Kelley, that kind of thing.âÂ
Maybe it was some glimpse of the olden days-- swim team certainly wasnât about improving your tan, but TJ was more than willing to relax at Julesâ say so. âYeah, yeah, letâs put every fiercely competitive person who came on this trip right into the water and see how that race goes,â she suggested with a laugh. âThat can only go well.â Barely beating him to the door, tJ opened it wide enough for Jules to pass. âAnd I just bet youâre taking me to get ice cream first so Iâm nice and bloated tomorrow, I see how it is. Excellent tactical choice.â

itâs funny how things turn out to be so much more than what one expects out of something. leigh had intended on staying solely for the funeral, pay respects and go back to her life â and yet, here she is, standing among the crowd at coney island, wondering just how sheâd ended up getting convinced to come with the people she thought she didnât want to be surrounded with again, lest they bring back old emotions she never wanted to feel again â one of which is feeling youthful and free. she doesnât need the pretense â the temporary freedom turned back to reality once more. sighing, she picks up a marble and tosses it towards the water, fully intending on making it skip over the water harmlessly, but then a random forehead emerges from underneath the water out of nowhere, the marble hitting it square in the center.Â
âoh, shit!â leigh grabs the nearest person to her and pulls them in front of her, using them as her human shield. âcover me. fuck! is he looking at our direction?â probably yes, probably no â whatever the answer is, leigh doesnât risk staying any longer. she tugs on their arm and rushes away from the spot. âcome on. letâs grab some hotdogs. my treat.â
TJ was minding her business, trying to stay hydrated despite sweating like a pig, and only managed a grunt as she inhaled some of her water at the sudden pace increase. Leave it to Leigh to nearly start a fight on their first day at Coney. âWhat--â she had to pause to cough up the water. âWhat did you even do?â TJ looked back over her shoulder but theyâd put some fair distance between themselves and Leighâs unsuspecting victim. âCanât take you anywhere, can we?â

Cleo didnât bother amending her statement, letting TJ get as much a kick out of it as she wanted. Instead, she peeled herself up from the ground, feeling more rejuvenated thanks to the cooler temperature. Still was sticky as fuck, so was definitely gonna follow TJâs lead with a shower. âI wanted to know if you could braid my hair after I showered. I donât know how.â Admitting things she couldnât do wasnât something Cleo liked doing and to avoid TJâs gaze, Cleo had asked while gathering her things for the bathroom. âIâll get you food or something after.â
She considered the offer as Cleo climbed to her feet, finally offering a shrug. âYeah, I can,â TJ responded. As she shifted slightly to make room for her roomie, she considered the logistics of the whole friend group all in their hotel. âThatâs a sweet enough offer to me. Are we all supposed to be getting food together later? Iâm lost without a full and complete travel itinerary.â

âPerfect, letâs go.â He touched the outside of her arm lightly in a grateful, if slightly out of character, gesture. All week heâd been feeling a little uncomfortable in his own skin, second guessing what moves to make and what to say. He couldnât remember how to be around these guys - it was like playing a part without knowing any of the lines or cues. âI was thinking about going swimming early tomorrow, as soon as the lifeguards get on,â he added, off-handedly, but heâd been storing up âsafeâ topics of conversation for each of his old friends since theyâd arrived at Coney Island, just in case he got stuck alone with one of them. Theyâd both been on the swim team when Jules was captain in his senior year, making this the easiest place to start. âI reckon most people wonât get up until lunchtime so weâd have a couple of hours.â
TJ was content to be led towards ice cream, still feeling very much like a toddler, but let his words wash over her. Jules had always been a distant, fair weather kind of friend. The offer for plans tomorrow appealed to her on the desire to reconnect, so she figured that he must be trying, and she was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Not to mention, the promise of cool salt water before the day got too hot made her already long for the cool rush of it. âYeah, Iâll go with you for sure. You wanna try and swim laps in the ocean or something? We can go buoy to buoy, probably.â

Cleo wasnât asleep and she heard TJ finish showering and even mess with her delicate temperature. But exercise, aka the walk, had made her far too tired to bother getting riled about it. Instead, she shrugged from her place. âI am often one of those people.â But she sat up anyways, leaning against her suitcase, to watch TJ and decidedly pout up at her. âDo you know how to braid hair?â
âYou just nut right on the floor, huh?â TJ asked, snorting a little laugh as Cleo moved immediately onto the more important topic. She had never minded spending time with the groupâs youngest member. Dropping the jacket sheâd brought in case it rained-- ha, imagine it raining in this sweaty hell hole-- she eyed the young woman on the floor. âMaybe I can. Whatâs it worth to ya?â
