A bit of world building on the topic of interspecies relationships.
Evolution is weird.
To put it in my crude explanation, think of their world as being inhabited by people in permanent biological fur suits. The outside may be different but all the insides are the same.
Oh wait. That’s humanity in a nutshell, isn't it?
