Project #5: Synonyms

Artist Statement- Synonyms
Too often I find myself using the same words over and over and over... Without a doubt there are always more efficient ways of articulating feelings, thoughts and opinions. Getting a point across or making a statement can be poetic. Synonyms create a chance for a speaker or writer to have a diverse message, for words to become beautiful and original. Being bound to the cyclic nature of professing words one way is dangerous when the options are seemingly infinite. I strive to learn new words and to express myself artistically. Goodbye repetitiously mundane rhetoric, hello sweet rhythmic synonyms!

Robert Montgomery Response
Montgomery is a text-based artist that has many parallels to Holzer. His work is politically charged and socially relevant. He has done noteworthy pieces for huge fashion companies such as Dior.
I like that Montgomery talks about using his original pieces of text and writes his own poetry. Not that there is anything wrong with recycling another artists ideas or poems, but I believe there is something even more special in artwork that is the most original that it can be.
Another part of the interview with Montgomery that stood out were his remarks about working in the fashion industry and doing artwork for billboards and using very large signs, He mentions that through his work with these brands he has had the opportunity to try and redefine ideas and perception of masculinity. This is an awesome way for an artist to make a statement when they have such a large canvas and even bigger audience.

Jenny Holzer Response
Holzer is master of her craft. She successfully mixes words/text with images and knows how to evoke emotion from her audience. Her recent art done through typography work is especially powerful because of the use of government text and documents. She is making a statement by creating images with political messages set in aesthetic images to make her viewers truly think of the words that are typed out.
She made the transistion in her artistic career from being an established painter to doing more abstract work that was borderline performance. Some of her stories in the interview were very intriguing when she spoke about making that first leap into doing work outside with images and poetry text. Another excerpt in this interview i found interesting was when she mentioned that young people use the internet as their main platform for presenting themselves and their artwork. I find this particularly true of myself and how i spend my time connecting with friends and family through art and video and social media.

A simple idea but meaningful. It makes me think of a vagabond travelling the country by boxcar. good job!
The artist is present-project 4
I had a hard time figuring out what I was going to do for this one but I eventually decided to go with this clip of myself balancing on a railroad track. I live in a small town with two railroad tracks running through it, so it was a reflection of where I am from in a way. I have always been fascinated by the way giant, heavy trains can travel such long distances and so fast while staying on two narrow strips of metal. The act of walking along and balancing on a railroad track is a playful thing I used to do as a kid and I forgot how hard it actually is. Anyone who has ever walked along a railroad track has surely tried this as well and in that regard it is something that the viewers can connect with. The terms play, risk, and failure in the theme category on the project description are evident in this project as it is a playful act, and there is also risk of losing balance and falling off of the track which would result in failure. I chose the banjo music because it seemed upbeat and playful.
Balance is an important aspect of life as there will always be highs and lows. We strive for balance between our professional and personal lives and maintaining that balance is an important part of happiness. Overall I wanted to do something simple for this project and I chose to do this because it brought me back to my childhood, and it showed balance, which is something I am constantly striving for.

I like the simplicity. Also the backstory puts the song and performance into context for the audience, I think it turned out cool!
Performance Art
youtube
For my performance art piece, I chose to keep it relatively simple. The back story is what I really wanted to focus on. I have been a competitive runner since eighth grade when I first tried out for the cross-country team of my middle school. Running kept me in a straight line in high school and helped me to get into college, along with pay for the majority of my tuition and expenses (this was from my first bachelor degree from the University of Southern Indiana). I can without a doubt in my mind say that running was the first thing I ever fell in love with. Something about it felt so natural to me, like I was supposed to be doing it. Collegiate level competing gave so much to enhance my life; it allowed me to finish my degree, it taught me how to preserver and work hard through success and failure, it humbled me, it taught me how to strive for goals, it allowed me to travel the country and meet some life-long friends, the list could go on. Running will always be a huge part and influence on my life.
As for the song; simply put I am currently obsessed with Post Malone, and I kind of felt like the chorus “money made me do it” was fitting given the fact that really one of the only reasons I went to college the first go-around was to continue my running dreams, and ironically this is just how I paid for tuition.

Nice video effect, its like those paintings of the stairway that doesn’t have a start or an end.
Project 4:
I struggled coming up with an idea for performance art that would be something interesting. I though about my daily routines and all the steps I take, so I decided to choose my path most travelled. 4 out my 5 classes are in Plaza, and besides work I spend most of my time either thinking about my education or being physically present in class. I chose to act out my daily steps where I always wonder how I look walking up and down the stairs because they are so awkwardly spaced. They’re too long to do an average step, but too short to fit in two steps. So enjoy my representation of my awkward daily trots up and down the Plaza stairs.

Performance Art Project
I chose to destroy fruit for my performance piece. All the weapons I used were my own. The katana sliced through everything like butter. The throwing knives and bow and arrow slid through the fruit’s skin with no resistance. The aspect of this performance that I knew would receive criticism is the amount of food waste that was produced. I think this brings up a commentary about how readily available food is in america and how quick we are to throw away a half eaten sandwich or how we forget about food in refrigerators for so long that it spoils. I garden vegetables during the summer and do my best to add to a sustainable way of living… by the way all the fruit I demolished was placed in my compost pile. :)

Performance: A Hidden History
I found this article very interesting, Performance Art is a relatively new medium for artists to display their creativity. Not until the birth of photography and film and the entrance of art into the digital age could onlookers or the artist themselves document a performance outside of scripts, paintings and personal accounts. Learning that Da Vinci dabbled in forms of performance art was fascinating. Now that this art form has its own classification or medium there have been so many beautiful and well thought out performance pieces created by such artists as Ai WeiWei or Marina Abramovic.
The Artist is Present
I viewed this documentary for my first time a couple years ago for an Art Appreciation course I was taking. Abramovic has one of the most interesting and abstract takes on what performance art can be. She understands that this sort of art is best experienced in the moment, the emotional response is the organic foundation of a truly amazing performance. She trained herself for months before undergoing the long and intense performance at the MOMA. Understanding the unique dynamic between the audience and the performer, the connection between the body and the mind helped her have such profound performances. Marina knew how to get people out of their shell and inspire new generations of artists.

Vanishing and Becoming
This is original drone footage taken in my neighborhood last 4th of July. I liked the idea of using the fireworks as something fleeting and impermanent yet beautiful and lasting. I layered/blended some of the shots to add noise in the more tame sequences. The song is the Canadian National Anthem. :p

Time and Motion
I’m a broadcasting major and digital media minor and I’ve only been learning about videography/photography for about a year and have now started to put together videos in my classes and for MetTV. I enjoy learning how to edit video, shoot, produce, and create content. I have briefly learned of some artistic aspects used in video production, rather than just technical stuff, but after reading this chapter from “Making Art” it is now opening my eyes to the idea of time and also motion as relevant elements to consider. This reading points out that all visual art has a narrative and in motion media or video art much emphasis is put on the flow, tempo, pace and rhythm. How a piece of video art is edited can determine the meaning or message that is being portrayed, I’m happy to have read this chapter and get some insight into the artist’s take on time and motion.
Vanishing and Becoming
From what I could understand of this reading (which was very little... I read the whole thing and still have no idea what the hell just happened) the author is making it clear that projection is important. I relate much of this to the communication scholar Marshall Mcluhan’s theory that “the medium is the message.” The actual content doesn’t hold the same value as the actual media platform it is being distributed within. I’m not sure if this piece was meant to be satirically abstract and intellectually unattainable to normal folk but the whole thing flew right over my head. I’m interested to read other classmates comments on this reading.

Jackie Brown is a great movie. I live how Tarantino always gets Samuel L. Jackson in his movies. He's the best.
