Come and Get Your Love
Monica Zavala (Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, Acjachemen, and Mexican)
acrylic on canvas. 18” x 24”
At vibrant gatherings like Pow Wows, the mesmerizing 2-step dance often takes center stage. In this enchanting dance, partners intertwine their arms and hands, moving in perfect harmony as they follow the lead, creating an expansive chain of synchronized movements. The elegance of this dance is embodied by the graceful couple, Kiara Love Flores, representing the Kuupangaxwichem and Northern Ute heritage, and Mi’de Xxavier McKay Woon-A-Tai, a proud member of the Oji-Cree tribe. Their skilled hands and passionate spirits bring the 2-step to life, weaving a captivating tale of unity and tradition on the dance floor.

Tule Boat Launch
Monica Zavala (Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, Acjachemen, and Mexican)
acrylic on canvas. 24” x 24”
Dr. Stan Rodriguez, a luminary in the Kumeyaay community, has served as an extraordinary mentor, generously imparting his vast knowledge to those eager to learn. Among the many enriching experiences I've had, one that stands out is the annual tule boat launch event that Stan orchestrates with finesse.
In the lead-up to the launch, a dedicated team of participants seizes the opportunity to craft these unique vessels. I had the privilege of capturing this intricate process, showcasing the deft hands of Dr. Stan Rodriguez guiding the creation of a tule boat. His wisdom, combined with the hands-on involvement, encapsulates the essence of this ancient tradition, fostering a deep appreciation for the artistry and heritage of the Kumeyaay people.

Paaxwichat
Monica Zavala (Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, Acjachemen, and Mexican)
acrylic on canvas. 18” x 24”
Beadwork stands as a cornerstone in native fashion, weaving intricate patterns into jewelry, regalia, and a myriad of other items. More than mere craftsmanship, beadwork embodies a profound sense of connection. Through the artistry of beading, I've encountered a tapestry of extraordinary individuals, their talents shimmering like the beads they work with. Whether crafting earrings inspired by fellow artists or discovering new talents at social events, beadwork has been a catalyst for meaningful connections. These hands draw inspiration from the skillful touch of Virginia Aguilar, a gifted local beader hailing from the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, enriching this craft with heritage and artistry.
