Updated final movie poster. The title was not visible because I originally had it black so it blended into the background, so I changed it to a green color and made it slightly larger. I adjusted the credits so they are smaller and changed the color from white to a dark green.

I have learned so much in this class. It was my first time using Adobe, and I feel confident using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign now. The demos made by Joyce, and the Adobe tutorials were very helpful and I would keep referring back to them when needed. I even used Photoshop because I needed to make an image for a screen printing project for another class. I also used Illustrator for an assignment in a Design class I’m taking, and it showed I retained a lot of information! I am most satisfied with my movie poster because it shows everything I learned this semester all in one project. I also noticed with this last project that I didn’t have to refer back to demo videos as much. Overall, I like to use Illustrator the best. I still need to get the hang of Photoshop a little better since it has its differences from Illustrator. But I am going to continue to take a Digital Imaging class that I am excited for!

I am still not 100% sure what I want to do exactly but I have always been interested in learning digital art because I think it is the future of art, and I want to one day interpret my art digitally for print. I’d like to focus on Visual Communications because I’d rather focus on graphic design knowledge rather than animation. I also have an interest in becoming an Art Director. Right now I am taking classes focused on a Visual Communications certificate. I have previously taken 2D Design, Printmaking as a personal choice because I am interested in screen printing, and Drawing Fundamentals.

Poster in Progress:
So far I’ve used two separate images to create this poster. I used the lasso tool to remove an object from the background. Then I used the pen tool to trace the swimmer and layered it on top of the background. I also played with the layer mask tool to adjust the lighting of the background and swimmer. I still need to add in seaweed, I’m thinking of drawing my own, and filling it with a seaweed texture. Since my background is dark, I may have to make the title a lighter color with an outline.

Mock Poster: The type tool gave me a lot of trouble and I’m not sure why. When I would create a text box it would automatically prefill with the Steel tong font and I could not type freely. :(

Poster Plan:
I plan on combing images with smart layers to create my movie poster. I will have the image be in a point of view style from the seaweed’s perspective, looking up. It will be looking up at the female main character swimming with creepy seaweed rising up and entangling around her legs. The title will be centered on top in black, surrounded by the light of the sun shining through. The credits will be placed on on the bottom of the poster in white since it will be surrounded by the darkness of the seaweed.

Movie poster logotypes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I experimented with different fonts first choosing ones that I think look like thriller/scary movie fonts. I chose the “Chiller” font and used the lasso tool to elongate the letters. I wanted it to look similar to what seaweed looks like, long and slimy. I also condensed the font in the bottom two experiments to give it more of an uncomfortable feeling. The letters are not on the same baseline, but I will still play with them to see what looks best.

Final Mask
To give the mask more texture, I added lines under the eyes to look like bags. I also added some depth to the scales with a gradient, and changed the color of the dreadlocks to make them brighter. I now have a better sense of using the pen tool, creating patterns, knowing when to group certain images together, and making/saving my own swatches and gradients. Something I could’ve done better is make the mask look more 3-D. Overall, I am proud of my work!

Almost finished mask:
I added a gradient to the hair to have the affect that the color is fading. I also made scales by overlapping several ellipses and grouping them together. I copied and pasted this until the mask was covered. I know this is still a bit flat looking, so I was thinking of adding wrinkle folds along the facial features. Will get feedback from my Pronto group.

Mask work in progress:
I’ve chosen to go with a reptilian voo-doo type theme. I’m still figuring out how I should do the facial details. I like how I did the dreadlocks, and will most likely add more. I’m also thinking of adding scales in select areas. I can tell that I now have a hang of the pen tool because I am much quicker at using it and figuring out how to fix mistakes.

Face Trace of my dog, Dewey, a miniature pinscher mix.
This was challenging at first because of all the organic shapes for the shadows and fur. It took me about 4 hours as I am getting used to the pen tool, and I knew choosing an animal would take longer, but I was up for the challenge. Once I got the hang of using the pen tool, adjusting the shape, and using the divide tool it was smooth sailing. I’d like to still work on using the pen tool to get more accurate organic lines.

Mask Inspirations:
My mask inspiration mainly rooted from the basic human face shape and symmetrical features, but I also wanted to do something spooky. Then my imagination took over. I want the mask to have some type of movement. I got the idea of using stringy dreadlocks when looking at some of the masks that have features that go beyond the mask. The V for Vendetta mask and clown have a hat, the Mayan reptile mask has the lizard on top, and the band photo masks show unique headwear. The bottom half of the mask is reptile inspired. I’m thinking of having the mask be a shade of green with reptile scales around the cheeks to give it more texture and go along with more of a reptile theme. The dreadlocks may be a mixture of greens and browns.
