also going back and doing mooshu as someone who speaks one of the languages from the cultures involved in that world, I find it really funny now that I know for a fact they were just making some shit up for names like tomugawa etc 😭 like it fits the phonetic alphabet and vowel shift rules but some names are just not names at all (like tomugawa specifically definitely isn’t a real Japanese name— probably an illusion to the Tokugawa shogunate, if anything…)
I know it’s a kids game and I shouldn’t think too hard but being a Knower of Language has burdened me with seeing inaccuracies and it annoys me too much sometimes LOLLL
#don’t ask me to comment on the p101 mooshu names I’ve not played that version in like six years#tldr I think the KI writers room also loves google translate which isn’t correct all the time lol#wrt the pirate skyways: hamamitsu is the only one out of the three which adheres to the jp lang structure AND has kanji#this is because it’s actually a surname that’s kinda rare in hiroshima and hokkaido lol#hamamitsu could reasonably be written in a bunch of ways but hama would consistently be 浜 aka port/harbour#khotan isn’t a jp name but the side quest title khotan kaizoku (海賊 - pirate) is just there for the eng rhyme#subata fits the jp phonetic structure but isn’t a term at all#I kind of want to write a bigger post on this at some point but ehhhh#yappage
