Now he's uncharacteristically silent; confused and, for the first time since this conversation began, left with a painfully familiar paranoia that his former leader knew so much more than he himself was privy to. He let the sensation pass over him, conscious of the effect his silence must be having on Megatron, and swiftly forced an irritated scoff.

« Keep your lies to yourself. I know it tears you up inside to even consider acknowledging that I'm right, but you don't need dream up some half-baked fantasy where I somehow demean myself even more than you have. I wouldn't compliment Optimus Prime on his paintjob, let alone his shoddy leadership skills! »

His hands are clenched into shaking fists at his sides. He thanks what part of Primus he hadn't managed to scavenge that Megatron cannot see them.

« I remember you sharing your power with me when you had me too brainwashed and docile to even consider opposing you. When you had me kneeling at your throne like those fawning sycophants you preferred to surround yourself with. When you had a dog rather than a soldier, with no more free will than that beast you created to one-up Prime and Leobreaker. »

His clenched fists begin to creak and spark at the joints, and he has to force himself to relax.

« I might have coveted your power once, Megatron, but that was before I could appreciate the price I had to pay for it. A similar humiliating price to the one you now pay to whoever will offer you the most meagre scrap of affection in return. I'm not offering you mutually assured destruction, Megatron. I'm offering you the means to liberate yourself. As I have. »

« You compare me to Optimus Prime but fail to acknowledge how you once betrayed me to become an Autobot. Don't you remember? You sacrificed your life to tell me that I was wrong, that Optimus Prime was a better leader than I could ever be. Now here you are saying I've become him. Who should I be for you, Starscream, the leader of integrity you once wanted or the leader that proved you would never amount to anything? »

Megatron vents harshly, suddenly aware of how tightly he's gripping the arm of his throne. He forces himself to relax. Then, he relents.

« You're not wrong, Starscream. » His voice is quiet and he can only imagine what his words might do for the traitor's ego. « I still remember the first time I felt Unicron's power surge through me and how I shouted my thrill when I was able to control it. »

« Heh. »

« Remember when we got along so well that I used to share my power with you? Is that what you want, Starscream? Do you miss how my power tastes? How it feels? Because when it comes down to it, that's all that's really left. Never mind Optimus and his ridiculous notion of teamwork. It's you and me — the essence of Primus' spark that you stole and my armor. »

He's quiet then for a moment, considering. « War or not, I've never been happy, Starscream, but all you're spitting is nothing more than mutually assured destruction. »

« You know what I'm suggesting, Megatron. You can play the washed up warlord with your little Autobot friends all you like, but we both know what lurks beneath that stolen armour. You know that you're forcing yourself to live a lie. »

He's settled somewhat after his previous outburst, more composed. It's transparently obvious that he's wanted to unleash this little tantrum for quite some time, yet now that he has Megatron's attention, he seems possessed by the rare urge to temper his speech. He wants a second chance to show that he is truly Megatron's superior, but even he could only find shame in beating down the moping mess of a mech his former master has become.

« Oh please, listen to yourself! When has the mighty Megatron ever made war because it was necessary? » He spat the final word out as though it was a mouthful of poison. « Who are you? Optimus Prime? Have you forgotten everything that you once stood for?! »

Now he stops himself, intakes slowly, tries to reclaim some of that control that seems so eager to slip from his grasp.

« The point of power is power, Megatron. To take what you deserve because you can, and crush those that dare oppose you beneath your heel. Tell me, after all your little playdates with those fickle imbeciles you've chosen to consort with, are you any happier than you were when you dared to be yourself? »

« Then what do you suggest, Starscream? »

Megatron scowls, irritated, because he hasn't entirely hated discovering some semblance of happiness that didn't involve an act of violence, but he does hate how right Starscream sounds.

« Say I go home, throw Jetfire from his seat of power, rally the Decepticons to me, and take Cybertron before news of my return even reaches Optimus. All of that, not because it needs to be done, but simply because I can. Then what? »

« What is the point of an ambition for power if it leads to nothing? »
