i attempted an epilepsy pride flag! feel free to use for whatever, no credit required but id love to see what you make!
TOP: community. community in epileptic culture can be few and far between because even in the modern era epilepsy is often considered something to be ashamed of. if youre personally nervous about being forward with your epilepsy, feel shame, or just feel lonely because of a sparse community IRL, know that those who share your experiences stand with you
SECOND: recovery and hope. people sometimes say they “grew out of” epilepsy. i personally think that epilepsy is a part of you, just not necessarily a negative one! some have seizures daily, others have them once in a blue moon. what you determine to be a recovery is really a you-thing, but its something we all deserve
THIRD: support is similar to community, but it more incapsulates blogs like @moviehealthcommunity, @fuckepilepsy and others.
FOURTH: survival! (SUDEP MENTION) sudep kills 1 in ever 1000 people with epilepsy yearly. (SUDEP MENT OVER) in plenty of countries necessary medical things are overpriced. survival with a seizure disorder can be intense. but if youre reading, youve made it til now!
FIFTH: unity. whether you have epilepsy or another seizure disorder, we’re all in this together, surviving, supporting, and doing our best to change. pnes squad.
FINAL: isolation, loneliness and misunderstanding. as mentioned with community and unity, loneliness is a big issue. this also relates to the misunderstandings like putting something in your mouth, choking on your tongue, etc. its up to us to disprove and destigmatize epilepsy unfortunately. i put this at the bottom of the flag because i think our experiences as epileptics come from our struggles, but they make us strong and bring us together.
i also chose these colours because they’re relatively easy for the colourblind to differentiate!
[ IMAGE ID: a six striped flag. the top stripe is a purple-grey sandy tone. the second stripe is white. the third stripe is a pale chalky purple. the fourth stripe is a darker purple. the fifth stripe is a blue-purple. the final stripe is another purple, and the darkest. END ID. ]
