veilguard's marketing strategy was so funny because it really did seem to be trying to appeal to people on the assumption that everyone hated dragon age. remember how the author of one of the first major articles about the game was like "yeah i don't like dragon age and also haven't really played it so i'm glad the series is good now"
#dav#it sounds like someone who has never played a DA game and also doesn't know how writing works heard a developer say#'since companions are such a popular feature of the past games it makes sense to focus the new game around them more purposefully'#and then went 'got it. previously companions were written by having monkeys on keyboards slap out scripts we handed to voice actors'

i just think that the idea of a blue pro-circle pro-genocide viscount mage hawke being run out of kirkwall for shit politics is a lot funnier than the traditional like red non-mage hawke in that role
#hawke#varric tethras#hawke: as someone who is friends with a dwarf AND employs multiple dwarven servants. i cannot stand for anti-dwarf rhetoric

i’ve also been the one cheerfully accepting bhelen/rica before so this is a judgement-free zone, and not that i exactly want there to be discourse about whether we should cancel known fratricidal tyrant bhelen specifically for his relationship power dynamic and nothing else, but i’m just commenting on the phenomenon that it surprises me how positively that relationship generally seems to get viewed. like the source material for sure did not exactly scream happy and healthy on that one
#rica brosca#bhelen aeducan#hmm. what does happen to rica in a non brosca worldstate where bhelen is king#does he marry that woman trian was supposed to marry#which was probably a helmi i feel like that family is everywhere

i intensely dislike it when morrigan’s story is shown as ‘betrayal’ akin to solas and anders. like she didnt even lie to you once. no lies of omission no anything. what is her betrayal . its bad when women leave i guess
#morrigan#people do way overblow morrigan as a 'traitor'#but i also think it's possible to have replayed the game too many times to no longer feel the in-character impact#of a person who has potentially become your close friend#who discovered her mother wants to possess her and probably has had you kill her mother to protect herself from her mother's plans#having known the WHOLE TIME that her friend's quest is inevitably leading to their death#unless they participate in the plan that her mother (who you killed) (for having evil plans) came up with#and never told them about it until the last possible moment#at least my first time playing the game that was super harrowing and sad#but leaving in and of itself isn't a betrayal#and the withholding of information tracks whether she's your friend or not#if not then she doesn't feel like she owes you anything#and if she is your friend then like. it's morrigan.#'opening up about her true thoughts and feelings' is not her instinctive reaction to stress about interpersonal relationships

#dao#probably just devs forgetting#but it would make sense that the blight could give dwarves dreams again right#because the blight is like. the last lingering remnants of the titan hivemind or something

varric making carver a grey warden in the exaggerated intro is such a choice if he did not turn out to be one. assuming that represents the version of the story he usually tells. like the only thing less normal than writing and publishing worldwide an au where your friend’s lame templar brother was actually a cool grey warden is writing and publishing worldwide an au where your friend’s brother who died of the blight was actually a cool grey warden.
