TL;DR

13y/o boy made a joke about his sister dying and then she died shortly thereafter, enter magical thinking that colored every part of his life. parents of the same boy, only he's 17 now, had an idea and made him go be a camp counselor. being very rigid and unerring with odd rules wasn't seen as weird, just annoying! on the side, said boy/guy trained to become an essayist like his father. then people started dying at the camp because they were saying his magic words - the words you cannot say - and then the biggest form of protection fell off a tree the first year he didn't go (bc he was working with his dad tbh his dad is more of the arnold waite one here) and everything went to hell :\ guy spent the following year as a senile man, then got his act together a little more. then the camp opened again and he was like 'actually-'
