            ian is known for many things,   but sharing details about his personal life isn’t one of them.   what falls into the category of a personal life is different for everybody,   and most people would care to interject and say that ian sometimes shares a little more than he should.   but when ian says something that others wish he hadn’t,   it’s always to generate a specific kind of response.   

his real personal life is tucked away in the phone calls that he has with his parents,   always looking at the caller id with a carefully neutral expression before he gets up to answer where no one can listen.   it’s in his personal projects that he keeps filed away on his pc,   that he stays up working on all night and doesn’t even post them online.   a lot of his personal life is in his art,   which explains the panicked expression on his face when his sketchbook is knocked out of his hands and it lands on an opened page.   

the truly horrifying thing about the situation is that it’s an old book,   and it happens when he’s walking past the lemonade stand,   which is where his ex-girlfriend is working,   and said ex-girlfriend is also smiling softly in the drawing that his sketchbook is currently opened on.   ian is quick to bend down and retrieve it,  ignoring the apology from the stranger who knocked it over. 

there’s no hope when he knows that jo has already seen the sketch of herself in his notebook,   so ian rushes out with a quick line of defense.   “  it’s an old sketchbook,  ”   he says,   looking at her guiltily,   “  i ran out of pages in the one i’ve been using and this one had blank ones left.  ” 

speaking in technicalities, it was still wintertime. yes, getting out of the months most associated with the cold – december, january, february – wasn’t to say they had jumped into spring yet. jo could still feel the presence of winter, of that murderous season that took and took and took and was never fully satisfied. to think, there was a time that jo actually enjoyed the winter – the white blanket, the pine needles, the frozen lakes ( oh, damn those frozen lakes ! ) now, however... 

she had spoken to brad about being transferred to the dirty penguin – it was in the works, but she had nothing against standing by the stand, pouring a refreshing drink for the occasional passerby, feeling a certain kinship to lucy from the peanuts ( of course, lucy’s stand provided therapy, whereas this stand provided lemonade )... but it was still brisk, so ‘business’ was still a bit slow. winter ? the worst. that winter/spring limbo that they were currently in ? it followed as a close second. 

oh, but the thrill when one (1) person provided patronage ! not necessarily for the sake of monetary gain ( i mean... that helped... but... ) – it was just nice to have something to do other than watch people mosey back and forth, impressed by the new attractions. oh, the disappointment when he began walking away... up until he bumped into someone very familiar.

however, before she registered ian in that brief commotion, she registered the notebook that fell to the ground... and, wow, that was someone even more familiar ! wow, she saw that person in the mirror every morning ! of course, it was a much more flattering take than the mirror ( wasn’t everything to everyone ? ). yes, then she realized it was ian. what an awkward situation ! 

okay... so what would the better approach be ? joking about him having an obsession ? making a titanic reference ? complimenting it ? pretending nothing happened ? there wasn’t really a guidebook for this – no social script... so she decided to play it safe and boring. “ it’s – yeah, no, it’s, like – i get it. ” said the woman who could barely draw a circle. “ it’s, like, really nice, though – i mean, like, they probably all are. ” oh... oh. “ all of the, like, drawings, like, in general, i mean. ” nice save !

– “OH MY GOD, SORRY,” SHE LAUGHS, steadying herself on the arm of the person in front of her. “didn’t get you, did i?” the sloth had gone out clubbing on one of the first nights, but she’d promptly lost almost everyone after a few drinks. and then a few more drinks. and now she’s tipsily holding on to someone else for dear life while her drink sloshes slightly between them. ingrid’s drinking habits are known to be occasionally detrimental on the worst nights – pity the person who will inevitably need to help her home. “are you having fun?”

jo felt... out of place. had it not been advertised as some sort of ‘group bonding experience,’ there wasn’t a chance in hell she would’ve tagged along, but she was always falling prey to peer pressure ( real or imagined ). she was also certain she looked out of place... so, as she ruminated on the pros and cons of leaving – the pros being... not being there, the cons being leaving something that was advertised as a group activity and, therefore, seeming a bad sport, she felt the sudden ( literal ) grasp of another ( ...yes, perhaps she should leave... ). “ oh – yeah, no, you’re, like, you’re fine. ” at least she was still dry ! then, with a raised octave and a tendency to people please, she replied, “ yeah ! yeah, this is... like... so i, like, guess you are ? ”

“i don’t know what you’re talking about, that coat is dignified af,” she said, placing rabbert gently on the floor so he could hop around and adjust to his new outfit. he didn’t seem to mind it that much, so that boded well for their first production. it was going to be very unremarkable if all they had to show was two animals that didn’t really do anything and weren’t even in costume. “k that’s true, we didn’t even figure out what we want them to actually do…” cindy pondered that for a moment, brows furrowed in concentration. typical them to focus too much on the costumes. “we could hire a trainer. rabbert already knows like, three commands so he could probably learn stuff.” of course the commands he did know were ‘come here’, ‘up’, and ‘down’ so he’d still have to step up his game significantly. “it’d be sick if we could make them like, walk on two legs.”

“ yeah, like, i think he’s, like, fine, ” she said as she observed him doing what he always did when put under unfamiliar circumstances: gus laid down. it was also what he did under familiar circumstances. really, gus’s pastimes just consisted of laying down –– he really did make the perfect asparagus the theatre cat. “ okay, well, gus is, like, already really really good at, like, laying down, but, like, i don’t think that’s, like, a marketable skill, ” she replied, pointing to the cat who was – what? – a few inches away from them ? it didn’t warrant a point, but she offered one anyway ! “ what if we, like... do, like, that ‘jack jumps over the candlestick’ thing, but, like, it’s ‘rabbert jumps over gus’ ? then, like, we wouldn’t even have to, like, hire a trainer. ” both of the animals were already perfectly trained for it –– between gus’s favorite thing to do and how rabbert just naturally moved around ? fool proof, really. “ if, like, we could make them walk on, like, two legs, that would, like... be spectacular. ”

jo’s very biased answer forced june to bite her tongue—she thought james corden was rather charming; she was an avid fan of the late late show. if james corden hadn’t been in cats, she wouldn’t be sitting here with jo in the first place. at jo’s question though, june’s eyebrows smooshed together in thought. “judi dench. i really like her eyes,” she replied truthfully. had she been more crude, she would’ve mentioned something about judi dench being an absolute gilf. “but, if i ever get invited in a threesome, then…” she trailed off, lifting a brow knowingly.

“right,” june straightened her back, shaking the bag of buttered popcorn, “who would you rather boink—jason derulo or james corden?” it was a disturbing question, and june was silently hoping that it wasn’t going to be boomerang-ed back to her. this was the first time june was watching cats; she’d read about the film and its confusing litter box of reviews. hell, she even listened to the og broadway soundtrack a couple of times when she was a child! the movie wasn’t going to be that bad, right? people nowadays were just… dramatic.

okay, so jo hadn’t thought about this before – and thank god she hadn’t, what considering she was introduced to both of them by cats ( she was already acquainted with idris elba ) – but she did have an immediate answer... “ would, like, anyone say james corden ? like, no question – jason derulo. ” she had also seen the movie enough times to have her own question ready. “ your go – are you, like, gonna ‘boink’ sir ian mckellen or, like, dame judi dench ? ” truly no obvious answer there.

“good thing i’ve been dressing rabbert up since he was a baby,” she remarked as she stuffed her bunny son into a little sweater. her mom and sister had always thought it was ridiculous but who was laughing now? with rabbert lined up to be the next star of the theater world, her point would be proven once and for all. “do you think we need to like, have auditions? i guess in movies they like, hire stage trained animals but… one, that feels like cheating. two, i don’t know how many of those we could even track down out here.”

with the annoying things gus let jo do, she was convinced he gave up any form of dignity he once had when he was given to the shelter... and subsequently taken home by that person who loves cats – no, i don’t mean the animal, i mean the musical, garrett! considering she was stuffing his body into a makeshift coat and he was putting up no fight whatsoever ( listen, if he did, she would lay off )... “ i think gus, like, gave up basically, like, any dignity he, like, had left. ” just to parrot what’s already been said ! as she sat him beside rabbert, one thought came to mind: finally... gus really is gus the theatre cat. “ hm... ” so she was pretty sure they didn’t have the capabilities to train gus and rabbert to do anything cool ( especially gus – again, because he had no dignity left ), but cindy was right – it would feel like cheating. “ i mean, like... i think it, like, depends on, like, what they’re, like... gonna be doing? maybe just hire, like, a pet trainer... ” a pet trainer for a rabbit and an old cat – idea of the century !

India walked out of her bathroom as she continued to brush her teeth, “So, I was in the shower and I just thought” she said looking over at the person as she leaned against the wall with her eyes hung low, “There should be a reality show where flat-earthers have to find the edge of the world” she muttered out before spitting into the sink, “I honestly think that would be the best show ever right!” she said nodding at the person sitting there. 

okay... so here was the thing... even jo, who unironically liked cats ( the movie, the musical, and the book of poems they were both based off of ), thought flat-earthers had somewhat of a ridiculous streak. she’d read their arguments ( what else is one gonna do in their free time ? ), all of which were fallacious, and just... found it even more unlikely than there being other people out there who unironically liked cats. “ so, like, what would their, like... incentive be ? death ? like, literally falling off the, like, face of the planet ? ” she was very invested now.

an announcement from mtv’s sloth in paradise:

It is a sad day for the cast and crew of MTV’s Sloth in Paradise. We have recently lost two members, Cindy Eggers ( @cindyeggers ) and Josephine Cormac. Join us as we remember Josephine “Jo” Cormac’s life. 

Fellow sloth member, Ivan Anderson (27), insisted that Jo, as a thespian, would have wanted a symbolic send away and proposed laying buttons on her eyes. Friend and fellow sloth member, Hazel Widdecombe (24), suggested ‘Memory,’ as performed by Elaine Paige in the original West End cast of Cats, be played during her procession.

She is survived by an unknown Italian family, as well as an unknown mormon family. 

For those taken by surprise, Cormac and Eggers succumbed to a rare, rapid and fatal disease. Scientists are already attempting to discern the mysterious cause. Having worked with a group of stray Bahamian cats, biologists have drawn many parallels between the circumstances behind Cormac and Eggers’s deaths to rabies; however, it overtook the two much quicker than any other known case. Because of this, scientists are suggesting a potential mutation of rabies: Super Rabies. 

No matter the circumstances, Cindy Eggers and Jo Cormac will be dearly missed.
