This is my favourite Swarla scene and I am still processing why that is. Perhaps it’s VMs explosion of grief, needing to let go after suppressing it all day. Maybe it’s Carla, strong, resolute and loving.

lisa swain, a year after climbing out of the gutter of grief, coming home to a warm flat and a sleeping daughter and a stable partner who is warm and solid and there even when she doesn’t deserve it. a woman—her woman—soft and smart and divine smelling, who has somehow stayed through mistake after mistake. accepted every plea for forgiveness. seen her in a way she could never see herself.

asking the question, lisa finds, is easy.

because who wouldn’t want to tie themselves to carla connor? who wouldn’t (and hasn’t) attempted to steal even a little bit of whatever magic she possesses? to find a fraction of shared happiness; the mere promise of eternity; the well-meaning, mottled indentations that come from holding on too hard?

lisa is no different than the others, and despite the sudden clarity, she is still flailing. grasping. begging. she is preemptively apologizing—already prepared to lose everything—and there she goes again: putting herself in harm’s way.

she is testing fate’s limits. gambling away her sanity. jumping with no parachute. and despite it all, she looks at carla and thinks:
