Leo supressed a laugh by pressing his lips together. âWould that be one of her forms of revenge?â, he asked, trying to lighten up the mood. âAnd I think she found me useless. I did like training butâŚâ, he shrugged, feeling like that kind blast from the past was starting to hurt. He shrugged it off. âHave you seen Alex? Did you get to talk to anyone else?â, he asked with a smile, not wanting to continue this conversation.
âIt could be. Wouldnât be the first time some old witch left her fortune to a pet.â He laughed harder this time, now placing his hand on Leoâs shoulder. It felt good to be in his presence. He had always been one of his favorite classmates and it was a shame that he had gone so long without seeing him. âI have seen him. He was by the appetizer table. He looked very distraught. Which is weird. I didnât think he cared much for Delphine.â He cleared his throat. âAnd everyone else? Just Naomi.â He sighed as he said her name, not realizing what he was doing.

The amused expression didnât leave his face. Somehow everything she said, did and did not make sense. He really wanted to believe her; it was true, that she disappeared but it was always fun messing with her. âRuthless assassinâ, he repeated, chuckling. âWhy would you want to come back?â, he raised his eyebrows, trying to shake off the teasing that was literally flowing in his blood. âThirty? Thirty?â, he widened his eyes. âI want to ask a lot more about that, but how are we going to save the world, exactly?â, he furrowed his eyebrows.
The most dramatic eye roll to ever happen on the planet ensued while Claudia crossed her arms over her chest. Out of all of the academy students, she should have went to him last. He was obviously not going to take her seriously. âI came back because I wanted to make sure you were all safe. Youâre all my friends. I care about you.â Itâs said a bit aggressively even though the words are loving. âAnd I havenât thought of that bit yet. I donât even know âhowâ it ends. Just know it does and I need to stop it before itâs too late.â

James widened his eyes, his amusement growing every second this went on. He took a step back, nodding and at the same time holding himself not to make a scene and trigger Claudia with the fear she was most tortured from. âRiiiight, kidnapped by whom, exactly?â, he stifled a giggle. âHow old are you, again?â, he asked.Â
Claudia groaned, hating that she was wasting her time explaining herself when she could just get shit done, instead. But alas, she had to explain herself for things to make sense. âThereâs this thing called âThe Commissionâ theyâre in charge of time and how it works. They kidnapped me when I was fourteen, due to my ability and how it could be useful to them. During the time I was with them, I was trained to be a ruthless assassin. I worked for them a few years, but I ended up just wanting to come back to all of you. Wound up traveling to all sorts of time periods in the process, and even ended up at the end of the world. And now Iâm here, thirty years later.â She expressed to him with very few breaths. âSo Iâm around forty-four. My age isnât important, however. Saving the world is. So cut the shit, James.â

Even though it was a difficult day, Rico still had a few laughs in him. So instead of making some sassy comment like he humored Leo and replied with, âI have no idea. Knowing her -- one of the cats?â It was a possibility with Delphine being the way she was. Leaving everything to the cat, opposed to one of them. âThough if she leaves it to anyone, itâs probably Iris. I doubt itâll be Alex or myself. We always tested her.â Her laughed again, recalling times where Delphine had lectured him for bad behavior.
âThe cats are having a blast todayâ, Leo commented, trying to start a conversation. âI donât know what Delphine did, but whoever ends up living in this house, theyâd better treat the cats rightâ, he emphasized and widened his eyes. âDo we know who will inherit the mansion?â, he asked feeling a little oblivious to be asking that in a funeral.

Alex watched as people grieved over âone of the best minds this generation had ever seenâ, somewhat annoyed, somewhat guilty about it all. Heâd just seen Iris and had a good conversation with her, but now, out of all the people heâd expected to run into, heâd ran into Naomi. âI canât deal with it either. Itâs a bunch of bullshit. She was not a good person at all.â She had made changes to the world, but that was about it, That didnât make her good. Alex wished he had lived up to her potential though. He wanted to make change. Wanted to make the world a better place. âI think you feel that way because I doubt any of these people even liked her.â Her shrugged with his arms out. âEnough with the negativity though. How are you?â
Everyone seemed so pretentious, grieving around her. She did have enough of everyone crying around her. Why was it that pretentious? She held herself not to throw rocks on her urn. As she managed to get away from the crowd, she leaned closer to a familiar face and leaned her back against the wall. âI cannot deal with that anymore. I donât know why it feels that wayâ, she pressed her hands against her face.

Hera tilted her head at his words, soaking them in like a human sponge. Itâs true. They trained to together and went to school together since they were young. Then later on in life: nothing. It was as though they went their separate ways and never tried to find each other again. Hera found that very sad because she loved each and every one of her schoolmates with her whole heart. Even James, who had caused her to have panic attacks occasionally, due to his ability. She still cared for him deeply and saw him as a good friend due to their shared experiences. So hearing him talk so freely about how they had all been so close, made Heraâs stomach knot. âI wouldnât say itâs for âno good reasonâ. I think this could be our moment to get to know each other, again - the ones of us who are left, anyways. I think this will bring us closer. Maybe even end up with us having game nights and stuff.â Hera hit his leg with her walking cane and then laughed. âItâd be wild, wouldnât it?â
James didnât want to bother anyone-he technically didnât attend the funeral. He just kept roaming the halls and once wine was out, he took a glass and drank it all at once. Deep down, even if he was supposed to be the most malicious-yet he considered himself most mischievousof everyone in the academy-he was afraid his powers would get out of control. Because it was the first time he felt that numb. He would be flooding with dreams or even worse fears to people, when he didnât even intent that. He found himself around people he knew but didnât bother to remember their names, talking about the value of Delphine to society. Yet, he was feeling like something was choking him. On his way to get another glass of wine, he bumbed onto someone. âSome years ago, we were training togetherâŚNow we are hereâŚ.for no good reasonâ, he said, feeling a little sentimental and he started sipping from his second glass. âSorry, thoughâ, he mumbled, just remembering that he had bumped on them.

Thoughts racing a mile a minute about the end of the world and how sheâd managed to come back to the others, Claudia walked into her instructorâs office, surprised to see Iris there. She hadnât seen her in several years, so seeing her now, she found herself mouth open in confusion. Knowing Irisâ ability, she tried to slow down her thoughts for her, wanting to make sure she understood her when she told her what was happening and why she was here after all these years. âHello, Iris,â she said with a smile. âDid you miss me?â Itâs said in a teasing tone, but really, itâs due to the nerves of Claudia not knowing if Iris will believe her when she speaks. When she told James he seemed to think it was funny and she didnât want that happening again.Â
Iris found herself in her late instructorâs office. It was the right place to snoop in at the moment. And probably search for old notes about her. With one glass of wine in hand, she looked around instead, taking every bit of detail in. Closing her eyes, she could finally concentrate on herself and her thoughts. Her other hand glided on the edge of her desk, like she was going to remember every good thing that happened in that office. Suddenly, her head was bombarded with someone talking extremely fast, realizing that she had let herself loose a little too much. Her eyes closed tighter. âOkay, okay, slow downâ, she demanded and she regretted her tone the next moment, before opening her eyes to see who it was.

James looked amused at the little one, trying to assimilate, that he was in fact. Claudia. He stifled a mischievous giggle and came slightly closer. âWell, well, wellâ, he smiled, âLook at what the cat brought in!â, he gasped in faux surprise.  âNow, seriouslyâŚwhat happened to you?â.
Claudia glared at James so furiously that if looks could kill, heâd be dead already. âThis isnât funny, you ass,â she said to James, pushing his arm, annoyed that, out of all the others, that he was the first person she saw after all falling through the portal. âItâs a long story, but basically, I was kidnapped and now we have to save the world.â She paused. âWhich is why Iâm here. I need to stop it.â Which she hoped he took seriously. This was life and death and she couldnât stand the idea of the other others getting hurt, even if everyone in the world went down with them.Â

the-oneandonly-swanacademyâ:
âWell, I prefer you saying it out loud, than thinking about itâ, Iris chuckled whimsically. âSo, yayâ, she tried to lighten up the conversation. âShe did create most of our skeletons, that we keep hiding in our closetsâ, she said, looking down, trying to supress every bad memory. She should have expected that a funeral wouldnât be the right place to practice blocking peopleâs thoughts and talking with Alex, kind of helped that;in a way, at least, she was able to distinguish her own thoughts from the others. She didnât know if she wanted to reminsce or just say that when one door closes, another one opens. The grief was there and she didnât know what she could do with it.
Alex tried to calm himself down. He knew that he was being a little too dramatic, but he couldnât help himself. One of the most influential people in his life was now dead. Sure, she had been one of the meanest people in his life as well, but she had shaped him into the man he was today, so he couldnât help but to be upset. Sheâs gone, he thought to himself, Iâm not really mad at her. Iâm mad at me for not being who she wanted me to be. He hoped that Iris couldnât hear his thoughts. But if she did, oh well. Thatâs how he felt. âHonestly, I didnât get that about her. We were so much of a disappointment, that she went from wanting us to protect the world, to wanting us to hide. I think it was very selfish of her.â He rolled his eyes. âAnyways, itâs nice to see you, Iris. Do you know if anyone else is around?â

âOf courseâ, Leo said instantly and touched her arm, so that she would wrap it around his. His heartbeat got a little too fast. He was watching her all through the funeral, not really wanting to intrude her personal space just yet. But, then, again, he felt lucky that while being around people and interacting with them, he ended up being closest to her. âHow have you been?â, he asked, lowering the tone of his voice, but leaning much closer to her ear. He could already hear the birds chirping outside: in a way teasing him to what was happening, but at the same time creating the right atmosphere, as they would be walking out.
When Hera wrapped her arm around his, a soft smile played along her lips. This felt like old times, her and Leo standing arm and arm, ready to go through their instructorâs garden. It was something that Hera had done with him several times in their past. During their walks she would ask him what the birds were saying, and if a squirrel could talk to him as well, and heâd always entertain her questions. She loved that about him and always told him so. âIâve been wonderful. I work as concert pianist now. My ability to control sound, mixed with my hyper senses, have made me become quite sought out.â She wanted to say she missed him but she doesnât. âWhat about you, Leo? Are you a vet or something now?âÂ

Naomi raised her eyebrows in surprise. âLeast likely?â, she felt slightly offended. âWell, I would say the same to youâ, she pouted, and looked around. âShe was our instructor-this is a way to make amends, when she wouldnât even want that in the first placeâ, she sighed heavily and turned to him. âDonât you think?â
He took a very heavy breath. âYeah, she wouldnât want this at all. I think she wouldâve wanted us to avoid having a funeral altogether. Yet here we are, celebrating her life.â Though Rico wouldnât call it celebrating at all. He never liked Delphine - she was too much of a hard-ass. âBut youâre right. I wasnât going to come. Then I thought of you and everyone else and decided to come, after all.â

âCan you walk with me outside?â Hera asks the person closest to her. Sheâs familiar with their scent and the beat of their heart but both the smell and the heartbeat havenât been encountered in years. âI need to get out of there. Thereâs too much going on.âÂ

"What the fuck are yoOou looking at?â Claudia asks, head tilting to the side as she wipes her huge clothes with her hands. After twenty years of trying to run away from The Commission, sheâs finally home. However, she doesnât look the way she looked when time hopped. So sheâs a bit angry, even though sheâs seeing an old friend for the first time in years.Â

âIâm surprised to see you here. Out of all of us, I thought youâd be the least likely to show up,â Rico said, holding his glass of wine close to his chest. âWhat made you show?â The funeral service has just ended and all of the students have all gone their separate ways. Rico wanted to catch up with them though. He felt he needed to.Â
