If you have a website and you plan on optimizing it for search engines, then it’s fundamental you learn these terms. I’m pretty sure you’ll be bumping with some of them sooner or later.

1. Anchor Text – Anchor texts contain links and will direct you to another web page. These are usually of a different color than the usual text color – usually violet or blue – and usually underlined.
2. SERP – SERP is the acronym for Search Engine Results Page and pertains to the page of results that you get from sending a query to the search engine.
3. Meta Description – This shows up under the title tag on search engine results. It should be edited to give a short, unique and eye-catching description that will make search engine users click and visit your site.
4. Keyword – Keywords are the words that search engine users enter when doing a search. For every page, every industry, topic, etc. there’s sure to be a keyword.
5. Long Tail Keyword – Compared to keywords, long tails keywords are more specific and with this, it is easier to get a higher ranking. For example, compared to the keyword “software”, it’d be easier to get a higher rank with the keyword “image editing software” as there’s less competition and it’s more specific.
6. Fold – You know how our screen can only display up to a certain point? Then it cuts off the rest and you have to scroll down? That’s the fold. Search engines prefer that you have quality content there instead of bombarding your viewers with ads at first look.
