Post-CATWS Winterbones Fic Recs
I truly never could’ve predicted the incredible influx of amazing winterbones fics over the past year or so, and I especially couldn’t have predicted the rise of an almost entirely new winterbones genre – Bucky choosing to return to his abuser Rumlow of his own free will – in the year of our lord 2022. Previously I said I wasn’t going to make a separate winterbones rec list, since most of my favs were already on my HTP rec list, but this delicious new HTP-adjacent genre really deserves its own collection.
Pretty much everything on this list will be some flavor of Bucky relapsing post-CATWS. While many of these fics may not be strictly considered HTP by some standards, rest assured they’re still plenty trashy and Rumlow is still a Very Bad Man. If you’re looking for actual good guy Rumlow and tender handholding, look elsewhere.

Darkness is an old friend to the man sitting on the cold concrete. He doesn’t remember how he came here, or his name.
The man only remembers the darkness, and the smell of blood, sweat, and desperation.
There is not much left of him today. He lifts his hands to stare at them. One made of flesh, the other made of metal.
He balls his hands into fists, watching the metal one work just the same way his other one does.
The man cocks his head and wonders what he did to deserve to end up in this hell.
Inhaling deeply, he scrunches up his nose. The food the armed men threw into the cell he’s locked in smells rotten, and his stomach gurgles.
He remembers hunger and pain. That’s all.
The man stares at his hands again. Nothing. Blank. Not a single memory comes up no matter how hard he tries to remember the last month, week, or even yesterday.
He inhales again, to smell anything but the food. Maybe, another smell will help him remember. Again, and again he inhales until a sweet scent hits his senses.
His eyes widen and he purrs low in his throat. Something steers deep within him. Alpha…he’s an alpha. That he remembers.
“Asset,” someone barks at him. The soldier is not the source of the scent. So, the man ignores the person barking at him.
He stares at the ground, looking at the blood and spit on the concrete.
He sits on the ground, sniffing in all directions to catch the scent again.
How long has he been inside this cell? The man can’t tell. He knows nothing. His past and present are only a dark hole in his mind.
“Asset,” the soldier’s voice spats. “Do you need another round on the chair?” Chair. The man stiffens at the word. He finally looks up to stare blankly at the soldier. “Get up. We’ve got work for you to do.”
“Soldat—” Another man steps out of the shadows. He looks at the man in the cell and flicks his fingers. “You heard him.”
The scent his back, and the man dips his head to look at the newly arrived man. This one is dressed in all black, unlike the other men coming to the cell to bark orders at the prisoner or throw food at him.
For a second the other man holds the prisoner’s gaze. Without a word, the man gets up from the ground. His body works on autopilot as he steps toward the bars. He stops right beside the door, waiting for them to open it.
His thoughts slowly vanish from his mind. Sometimes he feels better when this happens.
There is only a moment of doubt right after he comes off the chair.
“Ready to comply,” he replies as he stares into the distance. The man in black swallows thickly as the posture of the prisoner changes.
“Move forward, soldier. We have an important mission for you this time…”
Tumblr media
“Did the treatment work? He needed longer than usual to obey our orders,” there’s a new face yelling at the man in black. “I asked you a question, Rumlow. Did the chair work or not? Did his memories get wiped?”
“The Winter Soldier is ready to comply,” Rumlow drops his gaze and murmurs the words. The man in front of him is one of the higher-ranked masterminds behind Hydra.
He’s not to be underestimated. If you end up on his radar, you’ll lose more than your position, especially when you’re an omega in an organization full of ruthless alphas.
Rumlow looks at the asset, feeling his chest tightening at his blank stare. He can’t imagine getting his life stolen over and over again. There is not a day he doesn’t ask himself if he should just drop everything and run.
“Soldat—” Rumlow looks at the Winter Soldier. “I need to brief you now. Follow me.”
Not a word leaves the asset’s mouth. He follows Rumlow out of the room. The alpha dips his head for a second to inhale Rumlow’s scent deeply.
There is something in the back of his mind wanting to claw its way out of the fog clouding his mind. There is only one thing that can bring him out of his trance.
A scent, an irresistible scent drawing him in…

it is almost one am and im thinking about dick grayson and slade wilson. robin was written for batman. deathstroke was written for robin. slade exists to be dick grayson's villain.
slade would not exist without dick.
dick's hero is a father with dark hair and good morals. dick's villain is a father with light hair and dark morals. both of them have gotten their children killed. dick has had to pay the price for this.
dick wanted to be bruce's son. dick wanted his approval. dick wanted to be wanted by him. he resented bruce for not giving him these things.
(in teen titans 2003) slade wanted dick. wanted dick to be his apprentice, his son. dick resented him for this.
dick, to slade, will always "be the trophy."
how dick sees it, dick, to bruce, has always been just a "soldier."
slade is the very antithesis of bruce. this works out terribly for everyone involved.
im so normal about this you guys i promise

but “thank you for saving my life” maverick has spent more than three decades believing that the world would be better if he had been the one to die in that crash. has tried to do everything he can to atone for that moment. including fulfilling the dying request of the boy’s mother (whom he loved like a sister) aided by his own fear of his surrogate son dying so so young like his father and estranging his son from him. maverick goes on that mission knowing he’ll die saving his son as his final act of atonement. and he almost gets his wish. until the son he pushed away saves him in return and he realizes. his death is not required for atonement. sacrifice doesn’t have to be the end but can allow him to live. to let the grief and the guilt go. to thank his son for saving his life. because he wants to live. and “it’s what my dad would have done” bradley doesn’t remember much of his father but he knows goose loved him. he knows goose would have done anything for maverick. but goose wasn’t the man who raised rooster. his dad raised him. his dad taught him of the love required to sacrifice yourself for others. his dad taught him to never leave your wingman. his dad taught him to not think, just do. and through all the pain and grief and time lost he finally understands. because dammit he is his fathers’ son.

Would you ever consider the idea of an au where Rooster meets Rick Flag? I like to think something like your fic 'two colonels two assassins absolutely zero brain cells' where Rooster gets with Rick and Hangman gets with Robert in the same bed, but overall I'd love to know how you think Rooster and Rick would get along.
Oh god, my past is coming back to bite me in the ass 🤣🤣🤣
Rooster would try to get the grumpy colonel to smile at him, because so far he’s only seen him smile at DuBois and Harley, and why not him? He’s cute and adorable, people smile at him all the time.
Hangman is chuckling to himself in the background because he can see that Rick is just winding his boyfriend up, having noticed that Roo is desperate for a smile, and so not smiling on purpose.
“Please, just tell me what I gotta do to get you to smile at me, man!” He breaks, one day.
Rick smirks at him and leans in close. “I don’t think that pretty princess of yours would like my answer.”
“As the pretty princess in question—“ Hangman is quick to interject. “—if it involves you both naked and I get to watch, or play with that lovely, deadly husband of yours, I think I will very much like your answer.”
“Well, well, would you look at that, Bunny—“ DuBois drawls from where he’d been cleaning his knives in the corner. “—didn’t I tell you the blond one would say yes?”
Rick ignores his husband’s smug crowing, except to flip him off, and continues to look at Rooster’s big brown eyes, that are wide with shock and arousal. “Think you can handle DuBois, do you, Bagman?” He said, not looking at the blond, but watching the way Rooster’s moustache twitches at the thought.
“It’s Hangman, and I can handle anything. You gonna be able to handle Roo, Colonel?”
Rick pressed his palm against Rooster’s crotch, palming the straining length through his jeans. “Oh, I think I can handle him alright.”
And then he smiles, wide and sharp, with too many teeth for it to be anything but indecent.
Rooster whimpers, but nods his head, letting himself be led into the bedroom by Rick; DuBois following with a wiggling Hangman thrown over his shoulder.
He got his smile, even if it came with way more than he’d ever anticipated.

Tell me, Marvel. Tell me why you have to do this.
Tell me why you have to take a character who will, next year, have 50 YEARS of character development and strip absolutely all of the nuance and complexity out of him and boil him down to LOL IRREDEEMABLE MASS MURDERER FOR FUNSIES.
Tell me why you had to derail a perfectly good plot with Sabretooth becoming a leader figure to the mutant exiles to instead, him and a bunch of AU variants coming to kill all the mutants on Krakoa for literally no reason.
We have been through this. SO MANY. Times before and I think this is the worst fucking one. At least you used to let this man have some kind of motivation.
And Sabretooth was NEVER nothing but a fucking irredeemable mass murder. No matter what that SHITHEAD CHARLES XAVIER had to say about it.
When Sabretooth first appeared he was written as a sassy, savage and smart international assassin and killer for hire.
Then we found out that he had brain damage from military programming. This man is literally a fucking disabled war veteran.
And you know what?? The worst fucking retcon that Marvel ever pulled was years ago. When they started ignoring that Sabretooth DIDN'T kill Silver Fox.
He didn't kill her!! He and Logan didn't even have a poisonous history until Project X used brainwashing to turn them against one another!
And after finding all that out, when started to become an unhinged killer with no motivation and no joy he SOUGHT HELP FOR THAT. He tried to fucking medicate himself because it was too much! and when the medication wasn't working he sought help from the X-Men and they locked him up and told him he was irredeemable.
And after that he got used as a fucking government slave again! They put him in a shock collar and they enslaved him as their own attack dog.
And when he broke out of that control??? He fucking went after Weapon X to fuck THEM over!!! And he went back to doing hired assassin shit. He's not just a fucking pointless monster who has no motivation and kills for no reason. He kills for money. He kills for fun sometimes. But that's not everything of who he is and I'm tired of him having everything stripped from him.
The Madripoor arc where he was a crime boss hanging out with Mystique and in charge of the dark hand, that shit was great! That's how you use Sabretooth as a villain! He killed Wolverine then!!! HE KILLED WOLVERINE.
And then later, AFTER everybody got zapped with the "morality reverse" after he changed back, Sabretooth still decided to give being a hero a try. And he was good at it!! He was an excellent "Anti-hero" somebody to hang around all the other light side paladin and remind them that killing their enemies is EASY.
We could have had that for years. We could still have that. That was only 2017.
But no. BUT NO.
You retcon the whole god damn universe take away literally all of his character development STICK HIM IN A HOLE FOR YEARS, then promise us maybe MAYBE we'll get Sabretooth and The Exiles.
AND NOW THIS.
I HAVE FUCKING HAD ENOUGH MARVEL.
There are good ways to use sabretooth as a villain and this shit ain't it.

So anyway
I finished S2 firmly like "Nikolai and Kirigan should've been friends". Because they want the same fuckin things. They both want to end Grisha persecution, they both want to improve Ravka, they both want to end Lantsov corruption, they're both military, they're both willing to fight on the front lines or sacrifice for their people. Nikolai would've served under Kirigan during his military service, and seen him at court besides. They'd absolutely have hit it off.
But then I found out that Nikolai/Kirigan is actually a ship in this fandom. And I kind of get it? But mostly I'm cackling at the idea that like.
Nikolai is That Kid. The one that's like "I have a crush and I'm going to make it everyone else's problem."
It's like, a cute little hero-worship thing, at first? He's at that age where he's allowed to sit in on court proceedings, because even though he's the spare he's still expected to learn how to rule, and he's either just started his own military service or he's just about to, and unlike Vasily, he's proud to serve his country. And Kirigan is? Someone to look up to. Ravka has been at war for longer than Nikolai has been alive, besieged on all sides, and he knows that it's not his father the king who's keeping the Shu Han and the Fjerdans at bay. It's not Vasily, who's in his twenties now and would rather fritter away the country's coin on whores and horses than ever set foot on a battlefield. It's General Kirigan.
And - well, and the other chap, the First Army General in West Ravka, but Nikolai has never met him.
And like. Nikolai is a little people-pleaser. When he thinks of himself as king - which he knows is unlikely to happen, and he knows he shouldn't wish for it in the first place because the only way he'd ever get the throne is if something terrible happened to Vasily, he knows - but when he thinks of himself as king, he wants to think he'd be a good one. A benevolent one, who'd make life better for the common people and not just his own family. He pictures himself as a brave, respected leader of men. Independent. Strong-willed, driven, self-assured. Handsome. He pictures himself as someone like General Kirigan.
(He'll admit that, one day - the image he had of the Black General growing up, as the hero archetype a king ought to be - and Kirigan - Aleksander, by that point - will laugh himself stupid and say, "You're an appalling judge of character. There's too much monster in me to make much of a king." And maybe that's true - he knows Aleksander's done some terrible things, what soldier hasn't in war? - but he's Nikolai's monster, and Ravka's, keeping invaders away from their borders and assassins away from Nikolai's private rooms, so he'd argue that perhaps that's not entirely a bad thing.)
And, well, he gets a little older, and discovers that people are attractive, and childish hero-worship develops into full-blown hormone-addled teenage puppy love and. He's not subtle about it, like, at all.
It's like...Father invites the General to eat with the family one evening after a late meeting, and Nikolai bribes Vasily to switch seats so he can spend the evening charming his hero with his wit and maturity. What actually happens is that he goes all shy and mostly just Yearns™ across the table while all the adults present delicately ignore the moon-eyed elephant in the room.
He has a servant take some of his favourite books on military history over to the Little Palace, in case the General might like them, because he's fairly sure the Grand Palace library is..well...grander...than the Little Palace library. It literally does not occur to him how patronizing that is coming from a spotty sixteen-year-old with net zero victories to his name. He knows Kirigan must be a bit older than he looks - he swore the Grisha to the crown when Nikolai's grandfather was on the throne - but he has no idea that Kirigan served in the wars the books were written about.
When he's a little older and has more time to himself, he starts dropping in to visit at the Little Palace, which...isn't really the done thing, for some reason - none of his family ever have much call to visit outside of official events - but? Who's going to say no to the tsarevich? He has a tendency for a while to pop up wherever Kirigan is working and pelt him with enthusiastic questions - why did you form the Second Army? When did you build the Little Palace? Why do you bring all the Grisha to live here? Where did you grow up? What's the Cut? Can I see it? Why have you never brought your family to court? Do you have a family? Is there no Lady Kirigan? How long did it take you to make General? What did you do to get promoted?
Kirigan is polite. He answers harmless questions as honestly as he thinks he safely can - which lowkey affects how Nikolai's political opinions end up differing from his family's, because it turns out the General makes a lot of good points about how badly Grisha were and are treated outside the Little Palace, and it's not really Nikolai's place to have opinions on how his father rules but he thinks they should not be treated like that, maybe - deflects personal ones, entertains Nikolai's interest in strategy when he's in a good mood, gives him some harmless busywork tasks to do so he feels useful and lets Kirigan get actual work done. He's a bit flattered, even, that the boy sees him as a role model, because it's surprisingly easy to forget how impressive your military career has been, even in just this "lifetime", when all most people ever see when they look at you is the big bad scary Darkling. But at some point Nikolai does something stupid - tries to kiss him, gets too familiar, idk, he's like 17 and horny - that makes it blatantly obvious that he's misreading indulgence as interest, and Kirigan has to slam up some boundaries sharpish. Nikolai starts finding Fedyor posted outside the war room to tell him cheerfully that he's sorry, but the General is very busy and can't be disturbed.
(Fedyor and Ivan have been finding the blatant crush highly entertaining. Kirigan hasn't - he's fucking cringing on the inside - but he tolerates the subtle teasing from his heartrenders with something approaching good grace.)
Anyway, Nikolai grows up, spends years at a time away from the Grand Palace, has a pretty successful military career with the First Army and then amuses himself by turning privateer and fleecing the Fjerdans as Sturmhond. He grows up enough to realise how deeply cringey he was for a few years there, because he's gone through something similar with an overeager young deckhand who had a real thing for the Sturmhond persona. He's not far off thirty when Father has a heart attack and Vasily has a horse racing accident not long after and Nikolai finds himself recalled to Ravka to take the throne. He has to work closely with Kirigan, which suits him fine, because not only do they have compatible plans for Ravka, it turns out that as adult men on equal footing, they get on like a house on fire, and can even joke about his awkward younger self. And if he happens to...cross some conventions of propriety...well, he's old enough to know his own mind, and he's had it off with enough of his own crew to know how to balance a professional relationship and a personal one. Kirigan understands grief, understands pressure, understands having countless lives in your hands and no way to save all of them, and Saints know Nikolai needs to lean on someone, because Mother's too beside herself to have his fears and hurts on her shoulders too.
(Kirigan - Aleksander - understands that, too. Difficult mothers. Nikolai is learning all sorts of things about his General these days)
Actually you know what I've talked myself into the ship. This was supposed to just be a short post about the comedy potential of long-suffering Darkles dealing with a pampered princeling's obvious crush but have some headcanons instead bc all aboard the HMS Darkolai I guess

Nono but listen, Nikolai and Aleksander first met back when they were not yet Nikolai Lantsov or Aleksander Morozova, but two fairly young kids on a nameless town were Baghra and Sasha were hiding at the time.
It was Nikolai's first life. He was just a random kid, Aleksander doesn't even remember him or that he existed. But Nikolai invited him to play hide and seek, the first time someone invited Aleksander for anything at all. When the game was over, Aleksander told him he needed to go and Nikolai told him that he could call him any time, if he ever wanted to play hide and seek again.
Through the years, Aleksander kept finding the many reincarnatios of Nikolai by accident or fate, who knows. Each time, they'd get involved in a variation of hide and seek. Aleksander learns how to recognize the signs, even when Nikolai never recognizes him or recovers the memories of his past lives. Sasha had never told anyone about it.
Nikolai finally acknowledges their little game when Aleksander dies for good, this time both of them reincarnating. Aleksander can't remember his past life, so it's Nikolai's turn to realize how he has been chasing Sasha through centuries and lifetimes, reaching to try and make his first friend stay, stay and be safe, stay with him.

More aus where Aleksander ends up becoming a shadow that only Nikolai can see (because of the demon) and it's annoying at best, nerve wrecking at worst, especially when Aleksander starts giving seriously good suggestions due how worried he is about Ravka.
I don't mean a shadow like the ones Alina saw, but really just the silhouette of a man, a solid black figure, like the ones from the Disney Princess and the Frog. There's no way he can touch anything physicaly or do any harm. He must obey the law of the universe, behave like any other shadow.
Aleksander slowly starts forgetting how his face looked like, how it felt to have skin and bones, to eat, to sit under the sunlight and let it fill him. He admits he doesn't enjoy being a ghost that can only haunt Nikolai, but if that is what Ravka wants then he'd obey.
Bonus if Aleksander begs Nikolai to not get rid of the demon because he doesn't want to be alone forever, but he goes to do it anyway and then the ritual ends up bringing Aleksander back to life and it's the angst of the betrayal and the suffering. Maybe at first Aleksander comes back as more a shadow than a man, human-shaped but made of incorporeal darkness. They found that out 'cause he tried to kill Nikolai and his hand went straight through his chest anyway. He can't feel anything, eat anything, can't even sleep. They find out that only feeding himself with Nikolai's demon gives him back some real texture, which is "the worst way to get rid of the demon" in Zoya's opinion.
With time is obvious there's something more getting on Aleksander's nerve and eventually he has to confess to Nikolai he got attached to the prince king pirate whatever. For some foolish reason he thought Nikolai might have tried to stay with him. He sounds like a kid asking his mom to stay by his side in bed because he is afraid of the dark. Nikolai thinks of telling him why would I do that but instead confesses he wanted to, thought about a solution, but the demon was killing him and he could not afford to die. From there on it's chaos after chaos and an avalanche of hidden guilty feelings and the discovery that they might have became friends by accident.
