I kind of have two questions so I hope that's okay but if you can only answer one that's okay too. These are just the two biggest issues I've been having lately with my writing. 1. What's the best way to go about getting the right first sentence? 2. If you have multiple story ideas that you want to work on, what's the best way to go about picking just one to sit down and focus on?
1. What’s the best way to go about getting the right first sentence?
Not to be horribly blunt, but you’re probably too worried about this. Yes, there are fickle readers who refuse to move beyond a first sentence if it doesn’t immediately capture them, but that’s not the norm and the “best” opening is very dependent on each story. It’s not like writing an essay where you can find a template and fill in the words. Yes, the first sentence can be important, but I’d focus more on a first scene unless the perfect sentence comes immediately to mind.
Here are Three Ways to Start a Story and Three More Ways to Start a Story to give you a better idea for beginnings and might take away the first-sentence pressure, but here are some examples of first sentences written by published and established authors that show you the variety of how stories can be started (and not all of them are immediately attention grabbing!)
“It was raining in Richmond on Friday, June 6.”— Patricia Cornwell, Postmortem
“Don’t look for dignity in public bathrooms.” — Victor LaValle, Big Machine
“It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn’t know what I was doing in New York.” — Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
“It was a wrong number that started it, the telephone ringing three times in the dead of night, and the voice on the other end asking for someone he was not.” — Paul Auster, City of Glass
“Dear Anyone Who Finds This, Do not blame the drugs.” — Lynda Barry, Cruddy
There is no “right” first sentence, but there can be a “wrong” one if you fail to introduce the story at all. Even “It was raining in Richmond on Friday, June 6″, a pretty boring opening by my opinion, tells you something important: the date matters. A start should do at least one major thing like set the tone for the work, introduce the protagonist, introduce the setting, or many other criteria that a general beginning needs to address. It needs meaning. You should never write a first sentence just for a “hook” because the rest of your story may not properly follow.
You also have the option to write/edit it after you finish the ending, since by then you might have a better idea.
2. If you have multiple story ideas that you want to work on, what’s the best way to go about picking just one to sit down and focus on?
Once again you’re using the word “best” when writing is a very personal, and therefore subjective, process. “Best” for one person is not “best” for another, but here are a few ways to possibly narrow it down:
- Which one is the most complete or the best thought-out? A fuller plan usually means you’ll be more likely to stick to it.
- Here are some Ways to Develop Plot Ideas. Maybe you can test your ideas with some of these methods to see if any of them stand out to you?
- Is anyone else interested in an idea? It’s often easier to be productive when someone else is there to pump you up or to bounce ideas off.
- Does one of the ideas keep popping back in your head more frequently than others? Is one of them more fun?
- Pro and con list for what chasing an idea could lead to.
- It’s okay to have multiple projects going at once, but it can be hard for some people. Here’s an older ask with some tips on how to balance multiple projects if you think you’d like to try it.
Good luck with everything!
