The UGC-NET is an exam which is conducted by the -NTA National Testing Agency twice in a year on the behalf of the University Grant Commission (UGC). Qualifiers of this exam are eligible for lectureship in colleges or universities and students who are topper in their respective subjects in UGC NET, receive Junior research fellowship (JRF) while pursuing Ph.D. or research. Earlier either UGC NET or Ph.D. was the eligibility criteria to become an assistant professor but from July 2021 onwards, Ph.D. has become mandatory for the university academic positions.
The UGC-NET examination includes 2 papers and both of them have multiple-choice questions (Objective) without any negative marking. These examinations are computer-based and are referred to as computer-based tests (CBT).
The duration of the complete test including both the papers is 3hrs in which Paper 1 is of teaching and research aptitude which is general in nature and evaluates student’s reasoning ability, divergent thinking, and general awareness of the student. The subject of Paper-2 is selected by the student and is generally the subject in which he/she has done his/her masters.
As for the marking - there are 10 units in paper-1 Out of which, 5 questions of 2 Marks each are asked from each unit i.e total 50 Questions with the total of 100 Marks are there in Paper-1. Paper -2 includes 100 questions with 2 marks each in paper 2 i.e. total of 200 marks.
